Overview

The midsize SUV Kia Sorento was already popular gets additional standard safety and driver-assistance features for the 2023 model year.

The 2023 Kia Sorento is a functional and accommodating midsize SUV. It packs a ton of versatility for a vehicle its size, providing plenty of passenger space as well as up to 75.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The Sportage also includes a third row, though it’s best suited for smaller children. For 2023, the Sorento gains standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Otherwise, it is largely carried over from its 2021 redesign.

Trims for the Kia Sportage are LX, S, X-Line S, EX, X-Line EX, SX, SX Prestige, and X-Line SX Prestige.

The standard engine in the 2023 Sorento is a 191-horsepower four-cylinder engine. It routes power through an eight-speed automatic transmission. EX and SX trims come equipped with a 281-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power is routed to the front wheels or to available all-wheel drive (AWD).

The base engine in the Sorento returns fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 29 highway, and 26 combined. Adding AWD drops fuel economy to 23 mpg city, 35 highway, and 24 combined. The turbocharged engine with front-wheel drive (FWD) returns 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined, while the turbo engine with AWD gets 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined.

The base LX trim comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, remote keyless entry, six USB ports, and an intuitive 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.

The S trim adds rear parking sensors, integrated roof rails, wireless device charging, two additional USB ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, push-button start, synthetic leather upholstery, and heated front seats. It also gains a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, though you do lose the wireless capability for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (you’ll need to connect via USB).

The S trim (as well as EX and SX trims) are available with the X-Line package that includes standard all-wheel drive (AWD), additional ground clearance, and more rugged exterior accents.

The EX trim adds features such as a hands-free power liftgate, LED fog lights, and a power-adjustable front seat. The EX also comes with second-row captain’s chairs, bringing the seating capacity down from seven to six.

The SX features 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a fully digital instrument panel.

The range-topping SX Prestige comes equipped with genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and a Bose premium stereo system.

The Sorento comes equipped with Kia’s Drive Wise suite of high-tech safety features. This includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Available driver-assistance features include a blind-spot camera system, cyclist detection, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

Base MSRP for the 2023 Kia Sportage is $29,990 for the LX trim. The S trim starts at $32,490 and the X-Line S AWD at $34,490. The EX starts at $35,890 and the X-Line EX AWD at $35,590. The SX starts at $38,790, the SX Prestige AWD at $43,390, and the range-topping X-Line SX Prestige AWD $43,590. The Kia Sorento is backed by a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Let me start by saying the 2023 Kia Sorento is a nice vehicle. It drives well, looks great, and has solid features. That's not the issue. The issue is the front grill design. Kia left the radiator completely exposed behind the grill with no protective barrier. Over time, dust, debris, and rocks collect and pass right through, causing serious damage to the radiator. Based on my experience and the experiences of hundreds of other owners, you will likely need to replace your entire radiator within the first three years of ownership. I've filed formal complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, the Better Business Bureau, the Michigan Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Why? Because neither the dealership nor Kia America will cover this repair. It is not covered under warranty. You will be expected to pay out of pocket in my case, $1,350 for damage caused by their faulty design. The "solution" owners are left with? Going on Amazon and purchasing a metal mesh grill guard to install yourself, just to protect a part that should have been protected from the factory. A consumer should not have to modify a brand-new vehicle to prevent a critical component from being destroyed under normal driving conditions. If the grill had been designed properly in the first place, none of this would be necessary. Don't just take my word for it. Search Reddit, Google, the Kia Forums, and the NHTSA complaint database. You'll find hundreds of Sorento owners reporting the exact same problem rock damage to the radiator because of this open grill design. If you're a current owner dealing with this, I urge you to file complaints. Report it to NHTSA, the FTC, the BBB, and your state attorney general's consumer division. The more complaints on record, the harder it becomes for Kia to ignore this, and the closer we get to holding them accountable , whether that means reimbursement for owners or a full recall. Our voices matter, but only if we use them. To anyone considering this vehicle: I'd still say it's a good car just know what you're getting into with that front end, and budget for a radiator replacement Kia won't tell you about.

This is car is fully loaded. It drives very nice and the visibility from the interior is great. I’ve only had it less than a week but I am in love with the Sorento sonfar. Definitely the nicest car I’ve ever had.

Good SUV of this class. Comparable to Mitsubishi. This is a good price for that year.
