Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The data points to a compact car that feels more upscale than its price suggests, with a luxury-like cabin, sharp handling, and strong acceleration. It also fits buyers who want everyday usefulness, especially in hatchback form, where the extra cargo space and rear liftgate add versatility.

The main trade-offs are the frustrating infotainment system and the large C-pillar that limits rear visibility. Even so, the market still shows 32.6% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is presented as a refined compact car with strong driving feel and a premium cabin, which usually helps ownership satisfaction when you value the daily experience. Its performance tuning emphasizes balance, communicative steering, and a comfortable ride, all of which support a sense of durability in regular use.

The base engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four, and the car is described as rewarding without being punishing. If you’re buying used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that the car’s technology and rear visibility issues may affect how satisfied you feel over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a hatchback. Focus on the condition of the infotainment system, rear visibility, and any signs that the car’s safety or convenience features aren’t working as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features like dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
• Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It uses a six-speed automatic by default, with AWD available, and a manual transmission is available only on front-wheel-drive Premium models. The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, with automatic transmission and AWD standard.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
• Infotainment: The standard screen is 8.8 inches, and it is controlled by a rotary dial rather than touch input. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system also includes two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. Higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo system.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with FWD returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With AWD, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo-four/AWD hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core Mazda3 experience with the 8.8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, pushbutton start, and keyless entry. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the car’s upscale design and driving feel.
• Select: This trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. It looks like the best-value choice because it adds meaningful comfort and safety upgrades without jumping too far in price.
• Preferred: This one adds a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Choose it if you want a more premium daily-driver feel.
• Carbon Edition: This trim builds on the Select with unique styling elements. It suits you if appearance matters most and you want a more distinctive look.
• Premium: This trim adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale non-turbo setup.
• 2.5 Turbo: This trim adds the more powerful engine, but it gives up some equipment found on the Preferred, including navigation and premium leather. Buy it if performance matters more than feature count.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top trim and adds back features such as reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features. It’s the best fit if you want the most complete feature set.

The safety package starts with strong standard equipment, and the Select trim is the first step up if you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,218 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.67% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $22,099 sits slightly above last year's $21,737.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy carefully. The price range also shows that well-priced examples still exist, so condition and trim will matter when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

A major caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a large blind spot and hurts rear visibility. The infotainment layout can also distract you because some controls are unintuitive and require extra attention while driving.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.67% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends upscale design with sharp handling and hatchback versatility.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $20,675, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,099 average.
• It adds a Carbon Edition and stronger value appeal.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $21,370, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,099 average.
• It broadens configurations with more upscale polish and strong driving dynamics.

The bottom line: Buy the 2023 if you want the strongest mix of premium feel, driving enjoyment, and current-market availability. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 is worth a look if you want a newer alternative with similar upscale appeal.
