2026 Hyundai Venue Reviews SummaryAutomakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback. Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car. Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.
2027 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews SummaryNearly a decade after its debut, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is finally all-new. The second-generation model brings real wood trim, bigger screens, and a better ride. It also costs about $2,000 more, and its new face is a step backward. Still, the redesign gives one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models plenty of new reasons to shop it. Verdict: The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas fixes its predecessor’s biggest flaw and adds a lot of standard equipment for only a little more money. If buyers can live with a touch-heavy dashboard and a face that isn’t as handsome as the old one, it’s an easy SUV to recommend.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue was classified by Hyundai as a crossover SUV, though its dimensions and design suggested it was more akin to a tall hatchback. It featured only front-wheel drive and had a ground clearance of 6.7 inches, which was higher than a typical car but not quite as elevated as a standard crossover SUV. The EPA classified it as a midsize car due to its interior space. The Venue's design leaned more towards a crossover aesthetic, with a small and narrow appearance reminiscent of European runabouts. Its upright windshield, bluff nose, and standard roof rails contributed to its SUV-like look. The Venue's exterior was further defined by black rocker panels, black wheel flares, and a two-tone roof option. Inside, the Venue offered a simple and functional design, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad affixed to the dash. Body-color trim around the air vents and shifter added a touch of the exterior's feel to the interior.
In contrast, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas presented a more refined and stylish appearance. The redesign maintained the Atlas's already attractive profile, with a crisp character line running along the side and flared wheel arches that gave it a robust SUV stance. The rear featured cascading taillights with selectable lighting animations, though the honeycomb lower diffuser was seen as overly busy. The front design, however, was less well-received, with stacked headlights and a large plastic chin that seemed cluttered compared to the previous model. Wheel sizes varied from 18 to 21 inches, with the larger wheels looking better in person than in photos. Inside, the Atlas offered a significant upgrade with real wood on the dash, leatherette or leather upholstery, and a choice of ambient lighting colors. The cabin felt more luxurious than its price suggested, though the persistent use of piano-black plastic was a drawback. Overall, the Atlas's interior was spacious and well-appointed, making it a strong contender in its class.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue was not known for its performance, as it was powered by a modest 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. This power was delivered through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels, with no all-wheel drive option available. Despite its low power output, the Venue managed a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds, thanks to its lightweight construction at 2,738 pounds. The Venue felt peppy in city driving but struggled at highway speeds, where the transmission was slow to respond. Handling was aided by its small size and low weight, making it easy to maneuver in traffic and park in tight spaces. However, the ride could be jiggly on rough surfaces due to its solid rear axle.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas, on the other hand, was equipped with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 282 horsepower, though its torque decreased to 258 pound-feet. Despite the reduced torque, the Atlas was quick off the line, though the engine felt busy and less refined than desired for a family SUV. The eight-speed automatic transmission provided smooth shifts, and all-wheel drive was available on most trims. The Atlas's steering was precise, and it handled curves well for a large SUV. The ride quality improved significantly over the previous model, even on 21-inch wheels, and the cabin remained quiet at lower speeds. Fuel economy was rated at 25 mpg combined for front-wheel drive models and 23 mpg for all-wheel drive, with a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered cloth and synthetic leather seats with manual adjustments, providing adequate comfort for most drivers. Headroom was ample, but legroom was limited, especially for taller occupants. The rear seat could accommodate two adults comfortably, though three would be a tight fit. The Venue's cargo space was modest, with 18.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 31.9 cubic feet with the seats folded. The interior featured hard black plastic surfaces, with limited soft-touch materials.
In contrast, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in interior space and comfort. The front seats were firm and supportive, with additional features like memory and massage functions on higher trims. The second row offered generous legroom and optional captain's chairs, while the third row provided adult-friendly space with 34.1 inches of legroom. Cargo capacity was impressive, with 21.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.9 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 95.4 cubic feet with all rear seats down. The Atlas also included standard features like a hands-free power liftgate and dual cargo-area lights.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue came with an 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment functions, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, it lacked features like navigation and a premium audio system. The digital instrument cluster provided limited information and was not customizable.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas, on the other hand, featured a 15-inch touchscreen on most trims, with a 12.9-inch screen on the base model. The infotainment system was responsive, though some functions required multiple taps. The Atlas included a digital gauge cluster, head-up display, and a generous number of USB-C ports for device charging. A nine-speaker stereo was standard, with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system available on higher trims. Some features required a subscription, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. However, it lacked adaptive cruise control and received mediocre safety ratings, with four out of five stars from the NHTSA.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas had not been crash-tested at the time of writing, but it came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including VW's IQ.Drive system with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. The Atlas also introduced Emergency Assist Plus, which could bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver became unresponsive. A new front center airbag and standard parking sensors added to its safety credentials.
