2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

Unless buyers want a luxury model, the herd of midsize two-row crossovers is thinning as buyers gravitate to three-rows. Like the Mazda CX-70 and the Honda Passport, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a two-row version of a more popular three-row crossover, but its lowered roof and unique tail make it feel like a distinctive, standalone model akin to the Nissan Murano or the Chevrolet Blazer. Last refreshed for the 2024 model year, the Atlas Cross Sport is essentially unchanged for 2026, ahead of the arrival of a redesigned model for 2027. For this review, we grabbed a lower-level front-wheel drive (FWD) SE with Technology model to experience the value equation of this Volkswagen at a palatable price.

Verdict: The Atlas Cross Sport is a great value and well made, even if it's not enjoyable to drive.

2026 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

You may not have heard much about the Lexus TX, the company’s full-size three-row SUV. Introduced for the 2024 model year, it’s still a young’un compared to its competition, but has made its mark by offering a spacious interior and three different powertrains, wrapped in a stylish package.

In Lexus’ seven-model SUV lineup, the TX slots between the GX and LX—two body-on-frame models focused on off-roading. You can snag a gas-powered TX or one with a hybrid powertrain, but for this review we're focused on the 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV offers the most power and best fuel economy, but also has the highest price.

Verdict: The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ is a great option for large families that need a spacious third row, but some of the technology comes with a steep learning curve.

Look and feel

2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

7/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport presented a bold and rugged exterior, characterized by its high-sided, slabby body panels, large wheels, and oversized fenders. Its front fascia, reminiscent of a pickup truck, featured a wide, dark grille with a honeycomb texture, chrome trim, and sleek, stacked headlights. The light bar with the illuminated VW logo added a flashy touch, while the U-shaped fenders and 20-inch two-tone wheels contributed to its robust appearance. Despite its busy rear lighting, the Atlas Cross Sport maintained a clean look, though the thick chrome bar below the taillight strip seemed to age the design. The interior boasted smart, high-quality materials, with a single touchscreen, convincing aluminum-look trim, and an upscale seat design. The Dark Beige and Black upholstery added to the luxurious feel, making it one of the most expensive-looking interiors in its class.

The 2026 Lexus TX offered a variety of trim levels, with the 550h+ plug-in hybrid standing out due to its standard panoramic glass roof and striking Matador Red Mica paint. The large grille retained a hint of the older “spindle grille” shape, complemented by sharp bi-LED headlights and rear LED lighting that spanned the vehicle's width. Inside, the TX provided standard luxury features like multi-zone climate control and heated and cooled seats. The third row was notably spacious, accommodating full-sized adults comfortably. However, the overall material quality fell short of luxury standards, with basic plastic elements present. The redesigned door handles, while innovative, seemed unnecessary, and the interior could have benefited from more attention to detail.

Performance

2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

6/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine, delivering 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard on the SE and SE with Technology trims, while all-wheel drive was optional on these and standard on higher trims. The fuel economy was competitive, with 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined for FWD models. However, the engine struggled at higher speeds, particularly when climbing highway on-ramps, and the steering was light and lifeless. Despite its solid tracking and smooth transmission shifts, the rough ride and underpowered engine detracted from the overall driving experience.

In contrast, the 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid impressed with its 404 horsepower from a 3.5-liter V6 and hybrid system. The vehicle offered multiple drive options, including electric-only, hybrid, and gas-only modes, providing flexibility for various driving conditions. The TX delivered a quiet and smooth ride, with a suspension that absorbed bumps and potholes effortlessly. The AWD system allowed for power distribution between the front and rear wheels, enhancing traction on slippery surfaces. While the Sport mode increased throttle sensitivity, the TX was not designed as a sports car, focusing instead on comfort and efficiency.

Form and function

2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

7/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport provided ample headroom and legroom, with a palatial and supportive back seat. The infotainment interface was generally user-friendly, though the lack of manual climate controls and the bright touchscreen were drawbacks. Heated and ventilated front seats were standard, with additional features available on higher trims. The vehicle offered a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and generous cargo space, with 40.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 77.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The center console provided ample storage, and the LED map lights were notably bright.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ featured standard luxury amenities, including multi-zone climate control and heated and cooled seats. The third row was spacious, with a recline function and individual cupholders and USB-C ports. However, folding the second row flat was cumbersome due to a series of levers. The front seats were roomy but lacked thigh support, and the dual-opening center console lid limited access. The TX offered excellent cargo space, with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 97 cubic feet with the second row folded. All TX models could tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Technology

2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport came with a 12-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the infotainment system displayed navigation icons without offering the feature, which was frustrating. The trim level added adaptive front headlights, illuminated VW emblems, a hands-free power tailgate, and other conveniences. The proximity key worked at all four doors, and there were multiple USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad.

The 2026 Lexus TX featured a 14-inch touchscreen that was responsive but lacked some intuitive features, such as manual satellite radio input. The steering wheel buttons were multifunctional but confusing, and the infotainment system occasionally switched from satellite radio to Apple CarPlay without reason. Smartphone connectivity was essential, as in-dash navigation required a subscription. The TX offered a clear back-up camera with an available bird’s-eye view and an Advanced Park system for automated parking. With seven USB ports and wireless charging, the TX ensured devices stayed charged.

Safety

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport received a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with four-star ratings for frontal crash and rollover tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a 2026 Top Safety Pick. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control. The vehicle also featured automatic post-collision braking and the Intelligent Crash Response System.

The 2026 Lexus TX came with Safety System+ 3.0, offering forward collision warning, Lane Tracing Assist, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. Proactive Driving Assist was included but often activated unexpectedly. The adaptive cruise control worked well once set up, though it was slow to resume speed in traffic. The TX 350 and 500h received five-star ratings from the NHTSA, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the TX “Acceptable” in its small overlap front crash test.
