2026 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas continues as VW’s American-market three-row SUV (a two-row Atlas Cross Sport is also available, but we’ll cover that separately), largely unchanged from its substantial 2024 refresh. For 2026, Volkswagen adds a factory-installed HomeLink rearview mirror to all but the base Atlas SE trim level–hardly groundbreaking stuff. What remains, however, is a vehicle that impresses with its upscale appearance and a genuinely spacious interior. A stiff ride and poorly executed technology will fight and frustrate you every step of the way, but the Atlas will nonetheless make you look good.

Verdict: The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas delivers on its core promise of style and space at a non-luxury price point. If you can tolerate its subpar ride quality and maddening infotainment system—or if you simply plan to rely on Apple CarPlay and ignore the native tech—this handsome three-row SUV offers compelling value for shoppers prioritizing looks and space.

2026 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

You may not have heard much about the Lexus TX, the company’s full-size three-row SUV. Introduced for the 2024 model year, it’s still a young’un compared to its competition, but has made its mark by offering a spacious interior and three different powertrains, wrapped in a stylish package.

In Lexus’ seven-model SUV lineup, the TX slots between the GX and LX—two body-on-frame models focused on off-roading. You can snag a gas-powered TX or one with a hybrid powertrain, but for this review we're focused on the 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV offers the most power and best fuel economy, but also has the highest price.

Verdict: The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ is a great option for large families that need a spacious third row, but some of the technology comes with a steep learning curve.

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas presented itself as a sophisticated option in the mid-size SUV segment, particularly in the SEL Premium R-Line trim. This model exuded a sense of luxury with its Pure Gray paint and Titan Black upholstery, which maintained a clean appearance even after extensive winter driving. The Atlas's exterior design, featuring full-LED lighting and power-adjustable heated side mirrors, contributed to its upscale look. Inside, the Atlas offered quilted diamond-pattern leather seats and a 12-inch touchscreen, creating an inviting and high-tech environment. Despite its premium appearance, the Atlas was competitively priced, starting at $40,785 for the base SE trim, making it an attractive choice compared to more expensive rivals like the BMW X5.

In contrast, the 2026 Lexus TX aimed to deliver a luxurious experience with its various trim levels and powertrain options. The TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid, in particular, stood out with its standard panoramic glass roof and striking Matador Red Mica paint. The interior of the TX offered multi-zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, and a spacious third row with ample headroom. However, the overall material quality fell short of true luxury standards, with basic plastic elements scattered throughout the cabin. The redesigned door handles, while innovative, seemed unnecessary, and the interior lacked the attention to detail found in competitors like the Volvo XC90 or Mercedes-Benz GLE plug-in hybrids.

Performance

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, offered a balance of refinement and efficiency. While front-wheel drive was standard on lower trims, all-wheel drive was available across the lineup and standard on the Peak Edition and above. The Atlas's engine delivered peak torque from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm, providing a wide powerband for smooth highway merging and country road driving. However, initial acceleration felt adequate but not particularly quick, with a zero-to-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds for the AWD model. The Atlas achieved 22 miles per gallon during testing, slightly better than the EPA's 21 mpg combined estimate. The 4Motion AWD system performed well in rain and light snow, but the ride quality suffered due to the large 21-inch wheels on the SEL Premium R-Line trim.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid impressed with its 404 horsepower from a 3.5-liter V6 and hybrid system. The seven-kilowatt charger allowed for a full battery charge in under three hours. The TX offered multiple drive modes, including electric-only, hybrid, and gas-only options, providing flexibility for various driving scenarios. The ride was smooth and quiet, with the suspension effectively absorbing bumps and potholes. The AWD system could distribute power between the front and rear wheels, enhancing traction on slippery surfaces. While the TX 550h+ wasn't designed for sporty handling, it excelled in providing a comfortable and refined driving experience, making it an ideal choice for long road trips.

Form and function

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in accommodating passengers and cargo. The SEL Premium R-Line's front seats were heated, ventilated, and equipped with massage functions, ensuring comfort during long drives. The second-row captain's chairs allowed easy access to the third row, which offered decent leg support and enough space for taller passengers. With 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and a total of 96.6 cubic feet with all seats folded, the Atlas provided ample room for luggage and gear, making it a practical choice for families and adventurers alike.

The 2026 Lexus TX 550h+ offered standard luxury features, including multi-zone climate control and heated second-row seats. The third row was spacious, with a recline function and individual cupholders and USB-C ports. However, folding the second row flat required a series of lever adjustments, which could be cumbersome. The front seats were roomy but lacked sufficient thigh support. The TX boasted excellent cargo space, with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row and a total of 97 cubic feet with all seats folded. The available kick sensor in the liftgate added convenience for accessing the cargo area.

Technology

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas featured a 12-inch touchscreen with the MIB3 operating system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, and six USB-C ports. The SEL Premium R-Line trim added a Harman Kardon audio system, a head-up display, and a 360-degree camera system. However, the MIB3 system was frustrating to use, with touch-sensitive controls that were invisible at night. The voice control system was unreliable, making Apple CarPlay or Android Auto the preferred options for navigation and media.

The 2026 Lexus TX came with a 14-inch touchscreen that was responsive and easy to use. However, some features lacked polish, such as the inability to manually input satellite radio stations. The steering wheel controls were multifunctional but confusing, and the infotainment system occasionally switched from satellite radio to Apple CarPlay without reason. The TX offered a backup camera with a bird’s-eye view and an available Advanced Park system for automated parking. With seven USB ports and wireless charging, the TX ensured devices stayed powered during journeys.

Safety

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

8/10

2026 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with five stars in side-crash testing and four stars in frontal and rollover tests. The IIHS named the 2025 Atlas a Top Safety Pick+, though updated ratings for 2026 were unavailable. The Atlas came standard with Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive suite, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. These systems performed reliably during testing, enhancing the Atlas's safety credentials.

The 2026 Lexus TX featured the Safety System+ 3.0 as standard, offering forward collision warning, Lane Tracing Assist, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. Proactive Driving Assist, while intended to enhance safety, was often turned off due to its unpredictable activation. The adaptive cruise control worked well once set up, though it was slow to resume speed in stop-and-go traffic. The NHTSA hadn’t released ratings for the 550h+, but the TX 350 and 500h earned five stars. The IIHS gave the TX an "Acceptable" rating for the driver’s side small overlap front crash test and a "Good" rating for the passenger’s side.
