2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Reviews Summary

There aren’t many subcompact crossovers on the market with hybrid powertrains. As such, it’s tough to weigh the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek against a field of other options. The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is its primary competition; the Kia Niro Hybrid is exclusively front-wheel drive, and vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid all compete in the larger compact crossover segment. If shoppers want a fuel-efficient and genuinely small crossover with great all-wheel-drive capability, the new Crosstrek Hybrid is the best available choice.

Verdict: With its attractive styling, comfortable interior, and tested AWD system, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek delivers a terrific package, even if it’s not as efficient as some larger (and more expensive) competitors.

2026 Hyundai Venue Reviews Summary

Automakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback.

Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car.

Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

4/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid continued the evolutionary design improvements that Subaru had been implementing since the model's inception. The third-generation Crosstrek maintained its attractive appeal with subtle updates, such as the frameless grille and aerodynamic air inlets around the wheel arches, which enhanced both aesthetics and functionality. The interior of the Crosstrek Hybrid was a blend of rugged utility and refined comfort, featuring Subaru's straightforward design philosophy. The cabin materials were thoughtfully chosen, with soft-touch surfaces and durable plastics, while the distinctive orange contrast stitching on the gray StarTex seats added a touch of flair. The Limited Hybrid trim offered additional features like a heated steering wheel and an optional power moonroof, contributing to a comfortable and airy atmosphere.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue presented itself as a compact crossover SUV with a design that leaned more towards a tall hatchback. Its small and narrow appearance, along with SUV-like cues such as the bluff nose and roof rails, gave it a unique character. The Venue's interior was simple and functional, with a digital instrument cluster adding a modern touch. However, the small touchscreen felt like an afterthought, and the use of hard black plastic throughout the cabin indicated cost-cutting measures. Despite these limitations, the Venue offered a practical and straightforward design that catered to budget-conscious buyers.

Performance

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid was equipped with a 2.5-liter Atkinson/Miller-cycle engine paired with a 118-hp traction motor, resulting in a total system output of 194 horsepower. This made it the fastest Crosstrek to date, with improved acceleration and smoother performance compared to its gas-only counterpart. The hybrid system utilized two motor-generators, one for engine start/stop and battery charging, and the other as a drive motor and for regenerative braking. During testing, the Crosstrek Hybrid achieved 31 miles per gallon, slightly below the EPA's estimate of 36 mpg, possibly due to the test route's dirt roads. Subaru's AWD system, combined with the X-Mode traction management system, provided enhanced capability on variable terrain, although it came at the cost of some fuel efficiency.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The Venue's performance was modest, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds, aided by its lightweight construction. While the Venue felt peppy in city driving, it struggled at highway speeds due to its limited torque and the CVT's slow response. The Venue's handling benefited from its small size and low weight, making it agile in urban environments, but the ride could be jiggly on rough surfaces due to the solid rear axle.

Form and function

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

9/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

6/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid offered improved cargo space compared to its predecessors, with 18.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 50.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The gas tank remained a generous 16.6 gallons, allowing for an impressive range of up to 597 miles. Rear-seat space was ample, with 36.7 inches of legroom, surpassing competitors like the Corolla Cross Hybrid. However, front storage was limited, with a small tray for wireless charging and deep door pockets.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue's interior featured cloth and H-Tex seats with manual adjustments, providing adequate comfort for most drivers. While headroom was plentiful, legroom was limited, especially for taller occupants. The rear seat could accommodate two adults comfortably, but three would be a tight fit. The Venue offered 31.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 18.7 cubic feet with them up. Cost-cutting was evident in the use of hard plastics and the lack of sound deadening, but the Venue remained practical for everyday use.

Technology

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

5/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid came with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, but its software was slow and prone to fingerprints. While wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, the reliance on touchscreen controls for essential functions was frustrating. The Limited Hybrid trim featured a Harman Kardon stereo and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, but the lack of Google Maps integration was a drawback.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue featured an 8-inch touchscreen with basic infotainment functions. While it lacked advanced features like navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The audio system was a simple six-speaker unit, and the digital instrument cluster provided limited information.

Safety

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

7/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid received mixed safety ratings, with the IIHS not awarding it a Top Safety Pick designation due to marginal and acceptable scores in crash tests. However, the NHTSA gave it a five-star overall safety rating. Subaru's EyeSight ADAS suite included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking, but it lacked a semi-autonomous driving system.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning and lane-keep assist. However, it lacked adaptive cruise control. The Venue received a four-star safety rating from the NHTSA, and while it scored well in some IIHS tests, full ratings were not available. The Venue's headlights received mixed ratings depending on the trim level.
