2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Reviews Summary

There aren’t many subcompact crossovers on the market with hybrid powertrains. As such, it’s tough to weigh the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek against a field of other options. The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is its primary competition; the Kia Niro Hybrid is exclusively front-wheel drive, and vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid all compete in the larger compact crossover segment. If shoppers want a fuel-efficient and genuinely small crossover with great all-wheel-drive capability, the new Crosstrek Hybrid is the best available choice.

Verdict: With its attractive styling, comfortable interior, and tested AWD system, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek delivers a terrific package, even if it’s not as efficient as some larger (and more expensive) competitors.

2026 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas continues as VW’s American-market three-row SUV (a two-row Atlas Cross Sport is also available, but we’ll cover that separately), largely unchanged from its substantial 2024 refresh. For 2026, Volkswagen adds a factory-installed HomeLink rearview mirror to all but the base Atlas SE trim level–hardly groundbreaking stuff. What remains, however, is a vehicle that impresses with its upscale appearance and a genuinely spacious interior. A stiff ride and poorly executed technology will fight and frustrate you every step of the way, but the Atlas will nonetheless make you look good.

Verdict: The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas delivers on its core promise of style and space at a non-luxury price point. If you can tolerate its subpar ride quality and maddening infotainment system—or if you simply plan to rely on Apple CarPlay and ignore the native tech—this handsome three-row SUV offers compelling value for shoppers prioritizing looks and space.

Look and feel

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid continued the evolutionary design improvements seen in its predecessors, maintaining its attractive appeal. The most noticeable change was the front fascia, featuring a frameless grille with a curved wing bar that seamlessly connected with the headlights, creating a distinctive smile-like appearance. The aerodynamic air inlets and outlets integrated into the black plastic cladding around the wheel arches were a thoughtful touch, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing road noise. Inside, the Crosstrek Hybrid offered a balance of rugged utility and refined comfort, with a straightforward design that prioritized function. The cabin featured soft-touch surfaces and durable plastics, while the gray StarTex seats with orange contrast stitching added a subtle design flourish. The Limited Hybrid trim included upscale accents like chrome-trimmed power window switches and a heated steering wheel, contributing to an airy atmosphere.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, particularly in the SEL Premium R-Line trim, exuded an expensive look, bordering on luxury crossover territory. The Atlas showcased full-LED lighting, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, and a sculpted silhouette that aged well since its debut. The Peak Edition added rugged elements like unique bumpers and blackout trim pieces. The Pure Gray paint on our test vehicle resisted dirt, and the Titan Black upholstery with silver underlay provided a sophisticated look. Inside, the Atlas featured quilted diamond-pattern leather seats, metallic accents, and artificial wood trim, creating a warm and inviting environment. The 12-inch touchscreen promised a high-tech experience, although it was more about form than function. The Atlas looked more expensive than it was, with a starting price that was competitive against rivals like the BMW X5.

Performance

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid came standard with all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission. The hybrid model, powered by a 2.5-liter Atkinson/Miller-cycle engine paired with a 118-hp traction motor, delivered a total system output of 194 horsepower, making it the fastest Crosstrek to date. The hybrid's acceleration was smoother and quicker than the gas-only version, although it didn't feel significantly faster on the highway. The Crosstrek Hybrid utilized two motor-generators, with one handling engine start/stop functions and charging the battery, while the other acted as a drive motor and assisted with regenerative braking. During testing, the Crosstrek Hybrid achieved 31 miles per gallon, slightly below the EPA's estimate of 36 mpg. Subaru's AWD system, combined with the X-Mode traction management system, provided superior capability on variable terrain compared to competitors like the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas retained its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Atlas offered front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available on all trims. The engine's wide powerband, with peak torque arriving at 1,600 rpm, contributed to a capable performance, although initial acceleration felt adequate rather than eager. The Atlas achieved a zero-to-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds, slightly slower than some competitors. The Drive Mode Select system offered various driving modes, enhancing throttle response and gear holding in Sport mode. During testing, the Atlas recorded 22 miles per gallon, slightly better than the EPA's estimate. The 4Motion AWD system performed well in rain and light snow, although it wasn't designed for serious off-roading. The Atlas's ride quality was a drawback, with larger wheels transmitting vibrations and harshness, impacting overall refinement.

Form and function

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

9/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid improved upon its predecessors by offering more horsepower and cargo space. With a cargo volume of 18.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total capacity of 50.6 cubic feet with the rear row folded, the Crosstrek Hybrid provided ample storage. The gas tank remained at 16.6 gallons, allowing for an impressive range of 597 miles between fill-ups. Rear-seat space was generous, with 36.7 inches of legroom, surpassing competitors like the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Up front, storage was limited, with a small tray housing a wireless charging pad and two cupholders.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in accommodating passengers and cargo. The SEL Premium R-Line's front seats were heated, ventilated, and equipped with massage functions, providing comfort over long drives. The second row featured captain's chairs that folded flat and tipped forward for easy access to the third row. The third row offered decent leg support, and with the second row slid forward, taller passengers could ride comfortably. Cargo capacity was a strong point, with 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 55.5 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a total of 96.6 cubic feet. The Atlas offered competitive space across all three rows, making it an excellent choice for hauling people and belongings.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid featured an 11.6-inch touchscreen, standard on both Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid trims. However, the infotainment system lagged behind competitors like the Kia Niro Hybrid and Hyundai Kona. The software was slow, and the screen was a fingerprint magnet. Many controls were touchscreen-based, which was less convenient than physical controls. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, providing a more user-friendly experience. The Limited Hybrid trim included a Harman Kardon stereo and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, although the navigation map couldn't display Google Maps.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas came with a 12-inch touchscreen running VW's MIB3 operating system, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and six USB-C ports. The SEL Premium R-Line added a Harman Kardon audio system, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera system. While the interface looked sharp, it required numerous presses and taps to accomplish tasks. The touch-sensitive slider controls for HVAC and volume were invisible at night, making them difficult to use. The voice control system was unreliable, so using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto was recommended. The Harman Kardon audio system delivered excellent sound quality, and the Digital Cockpit Pro offered configurable views.

Safety

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

8/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, although the IIHS did not award it a Top Safety Pick designation due to lower scores in certain crash tests. Subaru addressed these issues by adding side-curtain airbags to the rear seats. The Crosstrek Hybrid included Subaru's EyeSight ADAS, featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, pre-collision braking, and automatic emergency braking. However, it lacked a semi-autonomous driving system comparable to those from Ford, GM, or Hyundai.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS for 2025. Volkswagen's IQ.Drive suite of driver assistance features was standard across all trims, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and Travel Assist. Emergency Assist was also included, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop if the driver became unresponsive. The systems performed reliably during testing, even in challenging conditions.
