2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Reviews Summary

There aren’t many subcompact crossovers on the market with hybrid powertrains. As such, it’s tough to weigh the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek against a field of other options. The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is its primary competition; the Kia Niro Hybrid is exclusively front-wheel drive, and vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid all compete in the larger compact crossover segment. If shoppers want a fuel-efficient and genuinely small crossover with great all-wheel-drive capability, the new Crosstrek Hybrid is the best available choice.

Verdict: With its attractive styling, comfortable interior, and tested AWD system, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek delivers a terrific package, even if it’s not as efficient as some larger (and more expensive) competitors.

2026 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

BMW offers the 2026 X3 in two flavors: 30 xDrive and M50. The latter is tuned for performance, but the base X3 30 xDrive is so good that you might be happy trading the M50’s outright speed and sheer capability for significant savings. BMW redesigned this compact luxury crossover in 2025, and the only tweaks for 2026 make the base model look and feel a little more upscale inside.

Verdict: For this review, we evaluated the BMW X3 M50. It was terrific, but with a sticker price more than $15,000 higher than the rewarding X3 30 xDrive, it’s hard to justify the extra money.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

8/10

2026 BMW X3

5/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid continued the evolutionary design improvements that Subaru had been implementing since the model's inception. The third-generation Crosstrek maintained the changes introduced in 2024, featuring new sheet metal and chassis construction. The most noticeable update was the front fascia, where a frameless grille with a curved wing bar created a visual connection with the headlights, giving the vehicle a distinctive smile. The black plastic cladding around the wheel arches included aerodynamic air inlets and outlets, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing road noise. Inside, the Crosstrek Hybrid offered a balance of rugged utility and refined comfort, with a straightforward design philosophy that prioritized function. The cabin featured soft-touch surfaces and durable plastics, with gray StarTex seats accented by orange contrast stitching. The Limited Hybrid trim added upscale touches like chrome-trimmed power window switches and a heated steering wheel, while an optional power moonroof contributed to an airy atmosphere.

The 2026 BMW X3, particularly the X3 M50 model, was a showcase of luxury and performance. Priced from $67,850, the test vehicle included numerous upgrades, such as a Frozen Deep Grey paint job, 21-inch wheels, and Merino leather upholstery, bringing the MSRP to $79,100. The X3's design was described as "monolithic," with a cold, industrial aesthetic that was an acquired taste. The illuminated grille surround was a standout feature, though it received mixed reviews. Inside, the X3 offered a spacious cabin with heated, power-adjustable front sport seats wrapped in Veganza, BMW's vegan artificial leather. The panoramic glass sunroof provided ample natural light, and the cargo space was generous, with 31.5 cubic feet available behind the rear seats and 67.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Despite the luxurious materials, some aspects of the interior felt austere, and the lack of surface liners meant items in storage compartments could be noisy during drives.

Performance

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

2026 BMW X3

9/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid was equipped with a 2.5-liter Atkinson/Miller-cycle engine paired with a 118-hp traction motor, resulting in a total system output of 194 horsepower. This made it the fastest Crosstrek to date, with acceleration that was noticeably quicker and smoother than the gas-only version. The hybrid system utilized two motor-generators, one for engine start/stop and battery charging, and the other as a drive motor and for regenerative braking. During a test drive, the Crosstrek Hybrid achieved 31 miles per gallon, slightly below the EPA's estimate of 36 mpg. The Crosstrek's AWD system, combined with Subaru's X-Mode traction management, provided excellent capability on variable terrain, although the steering feel remained light and somewhat disconnected.

The 2026 BMW X3 M50 featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. This engine delivered exhilarating acceleration, with BMW claiming a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The M50 also included performance hardware such as an M Sport rear differential, M Sport brakes, and an Adaptive M suspension. The base X3 30 xDrive, with a 255-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, was also sprightly, achieving 0-60 mph in six seconds. Both models came standard with AWD. The X3 M50's 48-volt mild hybrid system ensured a smooth automatic engine stop/start experience, and the vehicle averaged 24.1 mpg during a test drive. Despite its performance-oriented setup, the X3 M50 offered a comfortable ride, with a tight turning radius and advanced parking technologies.

Form and function

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

2026 BMW X3

7/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid improved upon its predecessors by offering more horsepower and cargo space. The cargo volume behind the rear seats measured 18.6 cubic feet, expanding to 50.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The gas tank remained a generous 16.6 gallons, allowing for an impressive range of up to 597 miles. Rear-seat passengers enjoyed 36.7 inches of legroom, significantly more than competitors like the Corolla Cross Hybrid. However, front storage was limited, with a small tray for a wireless charging pad and two cupholders.

The 2026 BMW X3 provided a spacious and comfortable interior, with heated, power-adjustable front sport seats wrapped in Veganza. The panoramic glass sunroof was standard on the M50, and the cargo space was generous, with 31.5 cubic feet available behind the rear seats and 67.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The X3's storage compartments lacked surface liners, which could result in noisy drives. Rear passengers might find the seat cushion too low, and the front seatback storage nets had hard plastic frames that could be uncomfortable.

Technology

2026 BMW X3

7/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid came equipped with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, but the infotainment system was not as competitive as those in the Kia Niro Hybrid or Hyundai Kona. The software was slow, and the screen was a fingerprint magnet. While wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, many controls were accessed via touchscreen buttons, which could be frustrating. The Limited Hybrid trim included a Harman Kardon stereo and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, but the navigation map could not display Google Maps when using phone projection.

The 2026 BMW X3 featured a BMW Curved Display with a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Premium Package added a head-up display and a Harman Kardon surround-sound system. The infotainment system ran BMW Operating System 9 with QuickSelect, offering cloud-based navigation, Augmented View video, and more. However, the system had issues, such as difficulties with Guest mode and a peculiar instance where Apple CarPlay played music through the smartphone speaker instead of the car's stereo.

Safety

2026 BMW X3

4/10

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid included Subaru's EyeSight Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, pre-collision braking, and automatic emergency braking. The 2025 model received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, but the IIHS did not award it a Top Safety Pick designation due to lower scores in certain crash tests. The 2026 model had not yet been rated by either organization.

The 2026 BMW X3 offered a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and an active blind-spot monitor. The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package added features like lane-centering assist and adaptive cruise control with hands-free traffic jam assist. The X3's safety tech was customizable, but there were some issues, such as unexpected braking when mistaking cyclists for obstacles. The X3 received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, while the IIHS awarded it a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
