2025 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

Volvo has had plenty of news this year, most recently with the introduction of the all-new, fully electric 2025 EX90. But that doesn’t mean the automaker is content to let its stalwart top sellers run on autopilot.

The second-generation XC90 gets its second substantial refresh for the 2025 model year. It’s still offered in Core, Plus, and Ultra trims and with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but Volvo has upped the ante. The midsize three-row gets updated styling, materials, and feature offerings, as well as some mechanical tweaks that aim to improve ride comfort and handling. We had the opportunity to experience the T8 and the B5 powertrains, both in Ultra trim, on a Volvo drive program in Europe.

Verdict: The Volvo XC90 was already quite a good vehicle. It’s earned its position as Volvo’s flagship SUV with oft-praised style and substance. For 2025, it has been made even better.

2026 Hyundai Venue Reviews Summary

Automakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback.

Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car.

Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

Look and feel

2025 Volvo XC90

10/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

4/10

The 2025 Volvo XC90 maintained its reputation for timeless elegance with a refresh that subtly modernized its design while preserving its classic elements. The updated "Thor’s Hammer" headlights appeared more robust, and the grille's new asymmetrical, woven-like design added sophistication. The XC90's exterior, available in Denim Blue and Bright Dusk, featured large wheels that complemented its elegant stance. Inside, the XC90 offered a comfortable and understated space with notable updates, including a repositioned infotainment screen and a more symmetrical center console. The interior materials, such as quilted Nordico and herringbone weave textile, added a Swedish touch, with the latter being a sustainable option made from recycled polyester.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue presented a more compact and functional design, resembling a tall hatchback rather than a traditional SUV. Its upright windshield and SUV-like cues, such as roof rails and black wheel flares, gave it a distinctive appearance. The Venue's interior was simple and functional, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that felt like an iPad on the dash. The Venue's design was more suited for urban environments, offering practicality and ease of maneuverability, but lacked the premium feel and spaciousness of the XC90.

Performance

2025 Volvo XC90

9/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2025 Volvo XC90 offered three powertrains, all with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The B5 mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine delivered 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, while the B6 added turbo- and e-supercharging for 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The T8 plug-in hybrid combined a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and an 18.8-kWh battery, producing a total of 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque, with a pure-electric range of up to 33 miles. The XC90's suspension featured Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology for improved ride comfort and stability.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 121 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque. The power was delivered through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels. The Venue's performance was modest, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds, but its lightweight design made it agile in city traffic. However, the Venue struggled at highway speeds, and its transmission was noisy under heavy throttle. The Venue's handling benefited from its small size and low weight, but its ride was less refined due to a solid rear axle.

Form and function

2025 Volvo XC90

7/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

6/10

The 2025 Volvo XC90's interior featured a practical center console layout with a repositioned wireless charging pad, enhancing small-item storage. The XC90 offered ample space for front and second-row occupants, with 38.9 inches of headroom and 40.9 inches of legroom in the front. The third row was tighter, with 36.3 inches of headroom and 31.9 inches of legroom, but it was competitive among midsize three-row SUVs. The XC90's panoramic roof added to the spacious feel, and the interior materials were of high quality.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue's interior was more compact, with cloth and H-Tex seats providing decent comfort. The front seats offered ample headroom but limited legroom for taller occupants. The rear seat accommodated average-sized adults, but legroom was tight for taller passengers. The Venue's cargo space was modest, with 18.7 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 31.9 cubic feet with them folded. The Venue's interior featured hard black plastic surfaces, with limited soft-touch materials, reflecting its budget-friendly nature.

Technology

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2025 Volvo XC90 featured a larger touchscreen infotainment system with a new user interface, offering a more user-friendly experience with fewer taps. The system was Android-based with Google Built-In, but Apple CarPlay was also standard. The XC90 offered a range of audio systems, with the top-tier Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system providing exceptional sound quality. The Ultra trim added a head-up display for added convenience.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue came with a simple 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment features. While it lacked some advanced features like navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Venue's audio system was a basic six-speaker unit, with no premium options available. The digital instrument cluster displayed limited information and was not programmable.

Safety

2025 Volvo XC90

8/10

2026 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2025 Volvo XC90 had not yet been crash-tested for 2025, but its predecessors earned top safety ratings, including a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and five stars from the NHTSA. The XC90 featured a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, and blind-spot information. However, it lacked a hands-free highway-driving system.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. However, it lacked adaptive cruise control. The Venue received four out of five stars from the NHTSA, and its IIHS ratings were incomplete at the time of writing. The Venue's headlights received mixed ratings, depending on the trim level.
