2025 MINI Cooper vs 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid showcased significant styling updates, particularly with its streamlined front fascia featuring a sleek lightbar known as the “seamless horizon lamp.” This modern touch, along with the repositioned badge and independent headlights, gave the sedan a contemporary flair reminiscent of the Hyundai Ioniq 6, while avoiding some of the more divisive design elements. The rear end, with its wide “H” shaped taillights and sporty black spoiler-esque trunk lid, drew inspiration from the new Hyundai Santa Fe. From the side, the 2024 Sonata retained a similar profile to its 2023 predecessor, with our Limited-trim test car sporting 17-inch wheels and a fashionable enamel gray color called “Transmission Blue.” The interior saw changes with a redesigned dash featuring continuous vents, a reimagined steering wheel with a T-shape, and a gear shifter moved to the steering column. Three interior color schemes were available, with our test car featuring a basic black interior.

The 2025 MINI Cooper, while maintaining its iconic silhouette, introduced subtle changes such as halo-ring headlights, a distinctive front bumper and grille, and taillights arranged like a split Union Jack flag. These elements complemented the car’s geometric vibe, whether in a three-door or four-door hatchback form. Inside, the Cooper boasted fresh design elements, including a ribbon accent on the dashboard and a tweed sport coat-resembling material. A panoramic sunroof, standard on four-door models, bathed the interior in natural sunlight. The infotainment system featured a 9.4-inch touchscreen with Mini’s latest Operating System 9, incorporating most controls while retaining some conventional switchgear. The front seats, covered in a matching cloth material, offered good side bolstering and standard heating, with optional faux leather available. Overall, the materials quality was commendable for a subcompact hatchback, with a pop-up screen acting as a head-up display for speed and driver-assistance information.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was notable for its newly available all-wheel drive (AWD) system, although this was limited to the gas version, with the hybrid remaining front-wheel-drive (FWD) only. The hybrid’s 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine and electric motor produced a total system output of 192 horsepower, routed through a six-speed automatic transmission. Despite most hybrids using a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for fuel economy, the Sonata Hybrid achieved an EPA rating of 47 mpg combined. The automatic transmission provided additional control, with steering wheel-mounted paddles managing regenerative braking levels in Eco mode and allowing gear shifts in Sport mode. The steering feel and handling were commendable, with a configurable driver-information display enhancing the driving experience.

The 2025 Mini Cooper housed a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The base model produced 161 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, while the Cooper S offered 201 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, both with front-wheel drive (FWD). The Mini Cooper S three-door accelerated to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, with the base model taking 7.4 seconds. The driving experience was exhilarating, with the engine feeling more powerful than its output suggested, and the dual-clutch gearbox providing seamless gear changes. The ride quality was enthusiast-centric yet comfortable, with the car feeling planted and smooth on highways. The Mini Cooper S excelled on mountain roads, with precise steering and well-contained body roll. However, the lack of paddle shifters and a manual option was a drawback. The Mini Cooper achieved an EPA rating of 28 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offered competitive interior space, with the Limited trim’s panoramic moonroof providing 37.8 inches of front-seat headroom, slightly above competitors like the Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid. Rear-seat headroom was equally competitive, with 37.4 inches with the moonroof. The Sonata prioritized front-row legroom with 46.1 inches, while rear-seat passengers had 34.8 inches. The Limited-trim test car featured heated and ventilated seats and a slimmer steering wheel rim, enhancing comfort. A trunk close button added an extra convenience feature.

The 2025 Mini Cooper, despite being a subcompact hatchback, offered surprising interior space with 47 cubic feet up front and over 32 cubic feet in the back. Cargo room expanded from 8.9 cubic feet to 33.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The driving position was comfortable, with the head-up display allowing for a performance-driving-ready posture. Ingress and egress were generally easy, although the extended steering wheel could limit these aspects.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid featured a selectable functionality for the driver’s side front USB-C port, allowing it to switch between data-transmitting and charging-only modes. The 2025 Mini Cooper’s Operating System 9 infotainment, under the BMW Group umbrella, was expected to function smoothly like iDrive but fell short. While the system offered fun themes, good graphics, and easy navigation between screens, it was laggy and required re-pairing of smartphones each time the car was turned on. The head-up display needed readjustment every time it was activated. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and several USB-C outlets.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid came standard with blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, safe exit warning and assist, lane-following and lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, automatic emergency braking, and rear occupant alert. The Limited trim offered additional features like the turn-signal-activated blind-spot-view monitor, surround-view monitor, Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist system, and Remote Smart Parking Assist. Hyundai’s infotainment system made safety features easy to find and understand.

The 2025 Mini Cooper included standard safety features like the Safe Exit function, pedestrian detection, and forward-collision warning. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality and lane-keep assist were available as part of the Active Driving Assistant package. However, the adaptive cruise control was laggy and easily confused. The 2025 Mini Cooper had not been tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but a recall for the integrated braking system had been issued.
