2024 Honda Civic Hatchback Reviews Summary

Few cars can put a smile on your face when driving and making the monthly payment like a 2024 Civic can. That’s especially true when it comes to the hatchback version, which adds significant utility and an available manual transmission to the mix. Last redesigned for 2022, the Civic hasn’t seen any major changes since then. But next year, the 2025 Civic Hybrid arrives in both hatch and sedan flavors.

Verdict: We’re big fans of the 2024 Honda Civic. Unless you want all-wheel drive, you can’t go wrong with this excellent compact car. It’s practical and safe, affordable yet first-rate, and thanks to its available turbocharged engine is a blast to drive. Instead of getting a small SUV like everyone else, strongly consider a Civic Hatchback instead.

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Reviews Summary

It’s easy to discount the value of a family sedan with so many crossovers on the road. But the fact is that this body style makes a lot of sense for a lot of families. The more manageable and maneuverable the vehicle, the better for teaching budding young drivers. Lighter weight also translates to better fuel economy, not to be sneered at when there are mouths to feed and tuitions to pay. And your typical midsize sedan is plenty spacious for four.

Fortunately, automakers have not forgotten about the venerable family sedan, keeping one another on their toes with updates, and it’s consumers who stand to benefit from that sort of healthy competition. Now, it’s the 2024 Hyundai Sonata’s turn for a mid-generation refresh.

Verdict: We already liked the Sonata Hybrid, and this refresh only improves it. The styling update and generous standard feature set make it a compelling choice, and the real automatic transmission is a virtually unique selling point.

2024 Honda Civic Hatchback

8/10

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

9/10

The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback was a vehicle that could change its appearance based on various factors such as angle, lighting, paint color, and wheels. It was likened to a character from a Seinfeld episode, sometimes appearing dowdy and homely, while at other times looking sporty and attractive. The Sport Touring trim, with its 18-inch alloy wheels and Boost Blue color, mostly appealed to observers, although the rear end was considered a bit stubby. The Civic Sport Touring's styling was generally agreeable, and it sat at the top of the lineup, which included the base LX, Sport, and EX-L trims. The interior of the Sport Touring trim justified its higher price with quality materials, elegant detailing, and a balanced amount of technology, featuring a metal honeycomb mesh on the dashboard and high-resolution digital screens.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid received significant styling updates, particularly in the front fascia, which featured a seamless horizon lamp for a modern flair. The badge was repositioned above the grille, and the headlights were placed independently below it. The rear end had a lightbar resembling the Hyundai Santa Fe, forming a wide "H" shape with the taillights. The side profile remained similar to the 2023 model, and the Limited-trim test car came with 17-inch wheels and a Transmission Blue color. The interior saw changes with vents flowing across the dash, a redesigned steering wheel, and a gear shifter moved to the steering column. The Sonata Hybrid offered three interior color schemes, with the test car featuring a basic black interior.

The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback offered two engine options. The LX and Sport trims came with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 138 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm. The Sport trim allowed for a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT with a Sport driving mode and paddle shifters. The EX-L and Sport Touring trims featured a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 180 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 177 pound-feet of torque between 1,700 rpm and 4,500 rpm. The Sport Touring trim offered a choice between a six-speed manual and a CVT. The test car had a CVT and 18-inch wheels with all-season tires. The Civic Sport Touring was praised for its lively and enjoyable driving experience, although it was loud on the highway. Fuel efficiency ranged from 29 mpg to 35 mpg, with the test car achieving 30.2 mpg on the evaluation loop.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid featured a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a total system output of 192 horsepower. It used a six-speed automatic transmission, offering more control than a CVT. The Sonata Hybrid was EPA-rated for 47 mpg combined. The steering wheel paddles managed regenerative braking levels in Eco mode and allowed gear shifting in Sport mode. The brakes were touchy, but the steering feel and handling were appropriate. The driver-information display was configurable, allowing simultaneous viewing of the tachometer and hybrid system's power flow. The novelty of accelerating at 0 RPM was appreciated during the test week.

The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback offered appealing extras in the EX-L and Sport Touring trims, including dual-zone automatic climate control, heated exterior mirrors, heated front seats, leather upholstery, and a power sunroof. The driver's seat had eight-way power adjustment, and the rear seat was roomy enough for two adults or three kids. The Sport Touring trim added USB quick-charge ports but lacked air conditioning vents. The cargo space behind the back seat was 24.5 cubic feet, nearly 10 cubic feet more than the Civic Sedan's trunk.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid provided competitive space and flexibility. The Limited trim's panoramic moonroof offered 37.8 inches of front-seat headroom, slightly above competitors. Rear-seat headroom was 37.4 inches with the moonroof. The front row prioritized legroom with 46.1 inches, while the rear had 34.8 inches. The Limited-trim test car featured heated and ventilated seats and a slimmer steering wheel rim. The trunk close button was a neat convenience feature.
