2023 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

In Volvo speak, “40” denotes an entry-level model. While the Swedish automaker no longer rosters the S40 sedan or V40 wagon in the United States, the XC40 subcompact crossover remains to compete with the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Lexus UX, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class for aspiring luxury-car owners’ dollars.

The XC40 was unveiled in 2017, arriving in the U.S. as a 2019 model, and hasn’t undergone a redesign since. An all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge variant joined the lineup as a 2021 model. Volvo’s other current EV, the C40 Recharge, is also broadly similar to the XC40 models, but with a coupe-like body style.

For 2023, Volvo gave the XC40 several notable updates, including new mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system previously seen on the XC40 Recharge and other Volvo models.

The mild-hybrid lineup includes base Core, mid-level Plus, and top Ultimate trim levels, with B4 front-wheel drive (FWD) and B5 all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrains. This Volvo XC40 review is based on the Ultimate trim in B5 AWD spec.

2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid Reviews Summary

The all-new second-generation 2027 Kia Telluride has big shoes to fill and seems to be easily up to the task. With ample power, an efficient Hybrid model, and clever design, it could very well be a class leader among very competitive rivals. There are also luxurious and terrain-capable variants to go along with the sensibly priced models, giving the Telluride even broader appeal than before.

Verdict: If the first-generation Telluride set the bar for value and family-friendly practicality, the second generation raises it. The latest Telluride adds a compelling hybrid option and a more upscale feel while keeping prices in check.

Look and feel

2023 Volvo XC40

9/10

2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid

6/10

The 2023 Volvo XC40 maintained its distinctive appearance, characterized by a flat-roofed profile that was quintessentially SUV-like. It embraced Volvo's clean design language, with hidden tailpipes on gasoline models reflecting the brand's commitment to electrification. The 2023 updates included a pixelated design for the "Thor’s Hammer" headlights, a more angular front bumper, and new wheel designs. The XC40 Recharge was easily identifiable by its sealed-off grille. Inside, the XC40 featured a minimalist design with thin air vents and scalloped elements, offering dual-zone automatic climate control and optional leather upholstery. The XC40 Ultimate test vehicle boasted a panoramic moonroof and an Orrefors crystal shift knob, though the all-black interior felt somewhat utilitarian.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid presented a bold design that could polarize opinions, particularly with its flat, wide grille. The vehicle's personality shifted with color and trim, with body-colored vertical strakes that varied in prominence. The X-Line and X-Pro models replaced these strakes with rectangular grille blocks and amber accent lights. The side profile featured angular fender sculpting and black plastic tabs, while the rear view adopted a Range Rover-like style. Inside, the Telluride's interior was less controversial, with a simple horizontal dashboard and a modern appearance. The Hybrid SX Prestige trim offered a luxurious two-tone palette, though some button labels were hard to read. The seats, covered in synthetic leather and suede, provided comfort, though the cushions were somewhat firm.

Performance

2023 Volvo XC40

2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid

7/10

The 2023 Volvo XC40 introduced mild-hybrid powertrains, featuring a 48-volt electrical system and a 13-horsepower integrated starter generator. The base B4 powertrain combined this system with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 197 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The B5 model offered a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four with 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Both powertrains came with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the B4 being FWD-only and the B5 AWD-only. The B4 and B5 models accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 8.1 and 6.1 seconds, respectively. The XC40 Recharge, with its two electric motors, delivered 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque, achieving zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and an EPA-rated 223-mile range. The XC40's refinement stood out, offering a composed ride and excellent chassis tuning.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid featured a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 274 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Telluride Hybrid added electric motors and a 1.65-kWh battery pack, increasing output to 329 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed transmission. The Hybrid was not available in the X-Pro trims but was offered in the X-Line trim. The Telluride Hybrid provided ample power and a quiet ride, with seamless transitions between electric and gas modes. Both Tellurides delivered a smooth ride, with the X-Pro Prestige trim offering comfort despite its off-road suspension. The Telluride was composed on winding roads, though not particularly sporty, and the brake pedal required some adjustment.

The XC40 provided 20 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place and 46.9 cubic feet with them folded. Interior storage was well-designed, with scalloped door panels and a large center console storage bin.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid offered ample space for adults in all three rows, though the rearmost row was better suited for smaller passengers. The second row featured power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation in the Hybrid SX Prestige trim. The Telluride provided 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 48.7 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded. All trims featured buttons to remotely fold the second-row seatbacks, offering up to 89.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
