2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2025 Porsche Cayenne Reviews Summary

Verdict: Even the base model Cayenne delivers an agile driving experience, but those willing to dig deep into their bank account for one of Porsche’s more expensive Cayenne models are rewarded with a spirited drive like no other. The competition here is stiff, in the form of other German SUVs like the Audi Q8, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, and their performance variants. However, the Cayenne is not here to lose.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2025 Porsche Cayenne

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer presented a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer. This resulted in a traditional design featuring a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof and unique hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, adorned with laser-etched knurling, while the wheel center caps were protected by acrylic glass. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered a luxurious experience with high-quality materials, including Nappa leather upholstery and optional Palermo leather, complemented by aluminum and American Walnut wood trim. The interior boasted 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests, along with heated and ventilated seats in the first and second rows.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne, available as a standard SUV or a sporty Cayenne Coupe, offered a range of trim levels from the base Cayenne to the high-performance Cayenne Turbo GT. The GTS trim featured high gloss black trim and bronze exhaust tips, with a specific front fascia and larger air intakes. The interior was highly customizable, allowing buyers to choose from various colors, trims, and seat belt options. The Cayenne's cabin was well-organized, with mechanical controls for essential features and a dashboard-mounted shifter toggle for added storage space. The GTS trim included a GT Sport steering wheel and Race-Tex headliner, with options for Race-Tex or leather upholstery. Despite its sporty nature, the Cayenne maintained a comfortable ride, with adaptive suspension and precise steering, making it a versatile choice for both spirited driving and daily commuting.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2025 Porsche Cayenne

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds, impressive for its 6,400-pound weight. The Grand Wagoneer came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, featuring a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. It also included the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, providing adjustable ride height for various driving conditions. With a maximum ground clearance of 10 inches, the Grand Wagoneer offered excellent off-road capabilities, although its size limited its trail performance. Despite its powerful engine, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a leisurely driving pace, as its ride could become bouncy at higher speeds.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered a range of engine options, including a base 3.0-liter V6 with 348 horsepower and a V8 in the Cayenne S producing 468 hp. The Turbo GT, available only as a coupe, boasted 650 hp, while plug-in hybrid options reached up to 729 hp. The GTS trim featured a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 493 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. The Cayenne GTS accelerated to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 171 mph. The GTS trim struck a balance between sporty performance and comfort, with precise steering and adaptive suspension. The Cayenne's handling was agile, thanks to components borrowed from the Turbo GT, and it offered a comfortable ride in Normal mode for daily driving. Optional carbon ceramic brakes provided ample stopping power, enhancing the Cayenne's performance capabilities.

Form and function

2025 Porsche Cayenne

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven passengers with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80. However, front-row space was more limited compared to the Escalade and Navigator. The Grand Wagoneer provided 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place, expanding to 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed, and 94.2 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. Its maximum towing capacity was 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its additional weight. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins, although forward visibility was somewhat limited by the hood design.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne, while lacking a third-row option, comfortably seated five passengers with ample headroom in the second row, even in the coupe body style. The Cayenne's towing capacity exceeded 7,700 pounds, comparable to a mid-size pickup truck, with a payload capacity of over 1,400 pounds. Cargo space in the standard Cayenne measured 27.3 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to just over 60 cubic feet with the seats folded. The coupe version offered 20.9 and 53 cubic feet, respectively. The Cayenne Turbo e-hybrid PHEV had slightly reduced cargo space due to its battery placement. The Cayenne's interior was highly customizable, with options for carbon fiber, aluminum, or bronze Neodyme trim, and a range of seat adjustments. However, many features required additional cost, as Porsche offered a vast options list for personalization.

Technology

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. It supported simultaneous pairing for two Bluetooth-enabled phones and included a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices. Second-row passengers had access to a 10.25-inch center console touchscreen, while an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer also offered a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, enabling control of navigation and entertainment functions. The Uconnect 5 system, based on an Android operating system, provided over-the-air software updates, although the screen response was occasionally slow.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne boasted a curved 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster with up to seven views, depending on the trim level. A 12.3-inch touchscreen display ran the Porsche Communication Management system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Spotify, Apple Music, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An optional 10.9-inch passenger screen allowed for navigation and media control, with a screen filter to prevent driver distraction. The Cayenne's screens were well-organized and responsive, with voice control available for many functions. A head-up display provided essential information, although it appeared dim with polarized sunglasses. The Cayenne included four high-speed USB-C charging ports and a cooled wireless charging area, ensuring devices remained cool while charging.

Safety

2025 Porsche Cayenne

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time of its release. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, intersection collision assist, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, traffic-sign recognition, and two levels of driver-assistance systems. Active Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, requiring hands-on driving, with a hands-free version planned for future release.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered standard safety features such as parking sensors, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. However, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning were optional. Porsche's advanced adaptive cruise control system, InnoDrive, anticipated traffic incidents up to two miles ahead, although it was not tested during the review. The Cayenne lacked a hands-off/eyes-up driving assist system. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS had rated the 2025 Porsche Cayenne for safety at the time of its release.
