2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2025 Mazda CX-70 Reviews Summary

The CX-70 midsize SUV mimics the Lexus RX by offering two rows of seats, seating for five people, distinctive styling, an upscale interior, and gas or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. If this new Mazda model looks familiar, you’re not mistaken. The 2025 CX-70 is the same as the CX-90, but without a third-row seat. Subtle styling changes help it to stand apart from its family-friendly sibling in the Mazda SUV lineup.

Verdict: Mazda envisions itself as a premium brand and makes the necessary investments in its products to ensure credibility in that respect. However, its vehicles also cost less than luxury-badged alternatives, adding value to the equation. That value makes it easier to forgive the 2025 Mazda CX-70’s few shortcomings.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2025 Mazda CX-70

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer exuded a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer. This resulted in a traditional design featuring a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile. Distinguishing itself from the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer boasted a standard black roof, a unique hood, front fascia, and grille with forward-leaning slots and laser-etched knurling. The vehicle's interior mirrored the Wagoneer’s but elevated the experience with high-end materials and features like 24-way power front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70, meanwhile, presented a sporty and appealing look, reminiscent of a sport appearance package for the CX-90. It featured redesigned front and rear fasciae, a different grille insert, new wheels, and dark accents, creating an optical illusion of a smaller size compared to the CX-90. Inside, the CX-70 offered a red leather treatment exclusive to this model, with quality materials and textures throughout. Despite lacking the sophistication of luxury models, the CX-70 delivered an upscale feel for its price range. It was available in three configurations: 3.3 Turbo, 3.3 Turbo S, and PHEV, with prices ranging from $41,910 to $58,905.

Performance

2025 Mazda CX-70

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabled the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds. The vehicle featured standard four-wheel drive with the Quadra-Drive II system, offering five drive modes and a height-adjustable Quadra-Lift air suspension system. With a maximum ground clearance of 10 inches, the Grand Wagoneer was capable of off-roading, although its size limited its trail capabilities. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best driven at a leisurely pace due to its bouncy ride and imprecise steering at higher speeds.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 offered a choice between a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine and a PHEV setup. The Turbo models delivered 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, while the Turbo S offered 340 hp and 369 lb-ft. The PHEV combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 323 hp and 369 lb-ft. All models featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The CX-70 excelled in handling, with athletic performance and responsive steering, although the ride could be brittle on imperfect surfaces. The PHEV provided a quieter and smoother drive, with an electric-only range of 26 miles.

It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than its competitors, although front-row space was more limited. The Grand Wagoneer provided 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place, expanding to 94.2 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. It had a maximum towing capacity of 9,850 pounds and came with standard features like a sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 seated up to five people, with heated front seats and a triple-zone automatic climate control system as standard. Premium Plus trim added heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The CX-70 offered 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat, expanding to 75.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. It featured a sizable storage area under the load floor and numerous cargo-enhancing accessories, including roof-rail crossbars and a rooftop awning.

It offered a second screen for seat massagers and an optional rear-seat entertainment system. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an Android-based operating system, provided over-the-air software updates and Amazon Alexa connectivity. However, the screen response was slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.
