2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB Reviews Summary

Designed for Europe’s narrow city streets and tight parking spaces, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class aims to maximize utility in an SUV that is minimally sized. The result is a boxy vehicle emphasizing practicality over style, offering seating for up to seven people and a base price under $40,000 combined with the performance, technology, and luxury upgrades you expect in a Mercedes.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

5/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer presented a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer. This resulted in a traditional design featuring a tall hood, broad shoulders, and trapezoidal wheel arches. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof and unique hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel center caps were protected by acrylic glass. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent suspension, and weight-saving materials like an aluminum hood and composite tailgate were used. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered high-end features such as 24-way power front seats with memory and massage functions, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim, setting it apart from the standard Wagoneer.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB slotted between the GLA and GLC in the automaker's lineup, offering a choice between the GLB250 and the AMG GLB35. The GLB250 came with front-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the AMG GLB35 boasted a more powerful drivetrain. The AMG GLB35 featured a distinctive design with black grille louvers and badges, and a new Rose Gold paint option. Despite its boxy appearance, the GLB's interior was a highlight, with high-definition displays and artistic air vents. The controls required some acclimation, but the quality was evident throughout the cabin. However, the road noise was notable, especially with the optional 21-inch wheels, which could detract from the luxury experience some might expect from a Mercedes.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

6/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds. The vehicle featured standard four-wheel drive with the Quadra-Drive II system, which included a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system was standard, offering adjustable ride height for various driving conditions. With a maximum ground clearance of 10 inches, the Grand Wagoneer could tackle off-road challenges, although its size limited its trail capabilities. The ride was comfortable at lower speeds, but the vehicle felt ungainly at higher speeds due to its weight and imprecise steering.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered two engine options, both turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinders. The AMG GLB35 version produced 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, significantly more than the GLB250. The AMG GLB35 featured an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD. It accelerated to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, with an EPA fuel economy rating of 22 mpg combined. The AMG GLB35 emphasized performance, with a firm ride and responsive handling, especially in Sport+ mode. However, the powertrain exhibited some lag, and the ride could be harsh with the optional 21-inch wheels. The GLB250 offered a more comfortable daily driving experience, but the AMG GLB35 excelled on twisty roads, providing an engaging driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven passengers with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, front-row space was more limited compared to these rivals. The Grand Wagoneer provided 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place and 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed. Its maximum towing capacity was 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. Standard features included a sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control, with a 360-degree camera system aiding visibility.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB was designed for urbanites needing a compact yet roomy SUV. It offered an optional third-row seat for children, although this reduced cargo space. Standard features included dual-zone automatic climate control and eight-way power-adjustable front seats. The GLB provided 22 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 62 cubic feet with them folded. The interior was comfortable, with easy ingress and egress, and the panoramic glass sunroof added natural light. However, the optional third-row seat was less practical in the U.S., and the GLB was not ideal for those needing a true three-row SUV.

Technology

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

9/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

10/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. A McIntosh audio system and a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot were standard, while second-row passengers had their own touchscreen for climate control. An optional rear-seat entertainment system added additional screens. The Uconnect 5 system, based on Android, offered over-the-air updates and Amazon Alexa connectivity. However, the system was occasionally slow to respond, and the instrument cluster graphics were considered plain.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB came equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and touchscreen. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, with optional upgrades like wireless charging and a Burmester audio system. The MBUX system was user-friendly, with natural voice recognition and a digital assistant. The navigation system's augmented reality technology was particularly impressive, aiding navigation in densely populated areas. The system could be controlled via voice, touchscreen, or physical controls, offering flexibility for users.

Safety

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. Active Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with lane centering, with a hands-free version planned for future release.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB lacked the optional Driver Assistance Package, which included advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance. The test vehicle did include Active Brake Assist, blind-spot monitoring, and Mercedes-Benz emergency call service. Standard features also included rain-sensing wipers and an Attention Assist driver monitoring system. Crash-test ratings for the GLB were unavailable.
