Reviews Summary

The Toyota Tacoma has reached “Legend” status: it’s the default choice for many shoppers, and for good reason. The Tacoma enjoys a hard-earned reputation for bullet-proof reliability. It’s the ideal size for many situations. It looks cool and, in TRD Pro trim, it can back up those looks with genuine off-road brilliance.

But heavy is the head that wears the crown, and the current Tacoma may be starting to buckle under the weight. With more powerful and more efficient options emerging in the compact and midsize truck space, Toyota is no longer the one-stop shop for shoppers. Luckily, a new Tacoma may be just over the horizon.

Reviews Summary

Electric vehicles have been kicking around America for some time now. From the ill-fated General Motors EV1 to the early success of the Nissan Leaf and on to the meteoric rise of Tesla, we’ve had plenty of time to get used to EVs. But there’s never before been an EV with as much mass appeal as the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

8/10

CarGurus experts rate the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning as 8 out of 10 and the 2023 Toyota Tacoma as 9 out of 10.

For the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, it may look like a run-of-the-mill F-150 on the outside, but it packs some unique styling cues. Available in four trim levels, the Lightning offers plenty of space for passengers and a range of luxury features.

On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma boasts an assertive stance with trim options to suit different needs. From the base SR trim to the TRD Pro, the Tacoma offers versatility and a range of powertrain options.

10/10

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

8/10

According to CarGurus experts, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning scores 10 out of 10 for performance, while the 2023 Toyota Tacoma scores 8 out of 10.

The Lightning's dual electric motors provide impressive horsepower and torque figures, making it extremely quick off the line. The extended range battery option offers a total range of 320 miles.

For the Tacoma, the 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers decent performance but may feel underpowered in certain situations. The Tacoma's handling is better suited for off-road adventures than high-speed driving.

Form and function

9/10

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

7/10

The F-150 Lightning offers a 5.5-foot bed and a spacious front trunk with a useful underfloor storage bin. The Lightning can tow up to 10,000 pounds and has a payload capacity of 2,000 pounds.

The Tacoma comes in various configurations, including an access cab with a six-foot-one-inch bed or a double cab with a choice of bed lengths. The access-cab body style features clamshell-style doors and comes with a six-foot-one-inch bed. Choose the double cab, and you’ll also get a choice between a long bed and a shorter, five-foot bed. No two-door regular cab is offered in the 2023 Tacoma, but if you’re looking for a compact interior, the access cab will fit the bill. Although it technically offers seating for four, the rear seats are very tight, not very comfortable, and are extremely short on legroom.
