Reviews Summary

The 2023 Kia Niro enters its second generation with fresh styling and numerous mechanical and tech updates, but it still offers a choice of three powertrains, with the Niro Hybrid, Niro EV, and Niro PHEV plug-in hybrid all returning for 2023. That means a change in focus for the all-electric Niro EV, which is the subject of this review.

The first-generation Niro EV was Kia’s first mass-market electric car not based on an existing gasoline model (the Soul EV paved the way for it). But the redesigned 2023 Kia Niro EV now shares the lineup with the Kia EV6. That model takes aim at more premium EVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Nissan Ariya, leaving the Niro EV to compete with entry-level models, such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, Volkswagen ID.4, and Nissan’s Leaf.

Available in all 50 states, the 2023 Niro EV launches in whimsically named Wind and Wave trim levels. We spent some time in the higher-level Wave version for this review.

Reviews Summary

Thanks to a new, more powerful rear-drive motor, increased driving range to nearly 300 miles, a next-generation infotainment system with substantial user-experience improvements, and a handful of comfort and convenience upgrades, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 is a better electric SUV than before. However, it no longer includes complimentary DC fast charging for three years. Instead, you get up to 500 kWh of free charging, after which you’ll pay to play.

Verdict: While the downgrade in free charging is a bummer, the updated 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 is not. With the technology better sorted, improved comfort, an impressive sound system, and more power, performance, and range, VeeDub’s electric SUV need not make apologies.

2023 Kia Niro EV

9/10

2024 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

The 2023 Kia Niro EV was designed to blend seamlessly with its hybrid and plug-in hybrid siblings, yet it managed to stand out among entry-level EVs. Its distinctive styling included divided headlights and a unique "Tiger Nose" grille, complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels exclusive to the EV model. The charge port was conveniently located in the center of the front fascia, making it easier to access at charging stations. At the rear, the Niro EV featured vertical taillights and "Air Blades" that contributed to its aerodynamic profile, although its 0.29 coefficient of drag was less impressive compared to competitors like the VW ID.4.

Inside, the Niro EV offered a creative design with a crescent-shaped dashboard and sustainable materials, such as recycled wallpaper and eucalyptus leaves. Despite the use of vegan materials, the interior still included piano black plastic, which was prone to glare and dirt. The Niro EV was built on the K3 platform, accommodating hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, unlike the dedicated EV platform used by the Kia EV6 and its cousins. This design choice allowed the Niro EV to maintain a more upright shape, contrasting with the pod-like silhouettes of other small EVs.

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 maintained a conservative yet timeless design, typical of Volkswagen vehicles. The AWD versions came with standard 20-inch wheels, while the S Plus trim featured a 21-inch design. The lineup included two models: ID.4 and ID.4 Pro, with the latter offering a larger 82-kWh battery. The ID.4 Pro models could be equipped with AWD for enhanced traction and performance. Prices ranged from $39,735 to $57,055, with a destination charge of $1,425. The 2024 ID.4 qualified for a $7,500 federal tax credit and included 500 kWh of free DC fast charging at Electrify America stations.

Inside, the ID.4 offered a choice of interior color schemes and improved usability with a new transmission shift stalk and revised steering wheel controls. The Pro models featured a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an improved user experience. The ID.4's interior, once considered radical, had become more familiar to EV drivers, though quirks like dual-function power window controls remained. The ID.4 turned itself on and off automatically, with a hidden button for manual operation. Overall, the 2024 ID.4 provided a comfortable and user-friendly interior experience.

Performance

2023 Kia Niro EV

7/10

2024 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

The 2023 Kia Niro EV was equipped with a 64.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a single electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque. It was front-wheel drive and could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 7.8 seconds. While not the fastest, it was quicker than its hybrid and plug-in hybrid counterparts. The Niro EV's all-electric powertrain offered smooth power delivery and a refined driving experience, though it lacked the nimble feel of competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the VW ID.4.

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 featured a new rear electric drive motor in the Pro models, delivering 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to reach 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The AWD version added a front motor, increasing total output to 335 horsepower and achieving 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The ID.4 Pro models offered impressive driving range, with EPA ratings of 291 miles for RWD and 263 miles for AWD. The ID.4 supported fast charging, with the ability to charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. During testing, the ID.4 demonstrated strong acceleration and handling, though road noise was noticeable at higher speeds.

Form and function

2023 Kia Niro EV

7/10

2024 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

The 2023 Kia Niro EV provided ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers, surpassing the Chevy Bolt EV/EUV and Nissan Leaf. It offered slightly more legroom than the VW ID.4 but less headroom. Cargo space was generous, with 22.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 63.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down. However, in-cabin storage was limited, with shallow door pockets and a narrow center console. The Niro EV featured large cupholders and a convenient phone tray.

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4's interior improvements made it more user-friendly and comfortable. The transmission selector moved to a stalk on the steering wheel, and the infotainment system featured a 12.9-inch touchscreen with improved usability. The Pro S and Pro S Plus models added ventilated front seats for enhanced comfort. The ID.4 offered ample legroom and footroom for rear passengers, with features like air conditioning vents and USB-C charging ports. Cargo space was generous, with 30.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 64.2 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Technology

The 2023 Kia Niro EV came with a standard 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a Harman Kardon audio system. The touchscreen was responsive and visually appealing, though it lacked wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Niro EV also featured a touch control panel for audio and climate controls, requiring toggling between functions. Digital Key 2.0 functionality allowed drivers to use their devices as a key fob, though compatibility was limited to certain smartphones.

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 introduced a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an improved user experience. The system featured a home screen with customizable data panels and always-visible climate controls. The navigation system included a battery preconditioning feature for DC fast-charging sessions. A nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system was available with the S Plus trim. The infotainment system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and included a digital voice assistant named Ida. The ID.4 also offered complimentary access to connected services and the option to turn the vehicle into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV included standard driver-assist features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot collision avoidance. The Wave model added parking sensors and an automated parking system. Both trims featured adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction. An optional Highway Driving Assist II system offered automated lane-change capability and machine learning. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available for this model.

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 featured a post-collision braking system and Volkswagen's IQ.Drive collection of advanced driver assistance systems, including Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. The semi-autonomous Travel Assist feature managed following distance and lane-centering on highways. The ID.4 also offered a semi-autonomous parking assist system with Memory Parking. The ID.4 received favorable crash-test ratings from the NHTSA, though IIHS evaluations were incomplete.
