Reviews Summary

The 2023 Kia Niro enters its second generation with fresh styling and numerous mechanical and tech updates, but it still offers a choice of three powertrains, with the Niro Hybrid, Niro EV, and Niro PHEV plug-in hybrid all returning for 2023. That means a change in focus for the all-electric Niro EV, which is the subject of this review.

The first-generation Niro EV was Kia’s first mass-market electric car not based on an existing gasoline model (the Soul EV paved the way for it). But the redesigned 2023 Kia Niro EV now shares the lineup with the Kia EV6. That model takes aim at more premium EVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Nissan Ariya, leaving the Niro EV to compete with entry-level models, such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, Volkswagen ID.4, and Nissan’s Leaf.

Available in all 50 states, the 2023 Niro EV launches in whimsically named Wind and Wave trim levels. We spent some time in the higher-level Wave version for this review.

Reviews Summary

We didn't expect them to go there. But the designers and engineers behind the 2022 Kia EV6 did—and deleted the template of their company's affordable, cost-conscious brand. This is a $60,000 electric performance car that can genuinely compete with a Tesla Model 3 on everything from tech to style to acceleration to charging time. It's a masterclass of fresh thinking in a market segment dominated by rehashed ideas. And yet, it's hampered by the same major problems that, for decades, remain unresolved. The EV6 would be amazing with battery technology that hasn't yet been invented. For now, we'll tell you what the present life is like with this most unusual and exciting Kia in years.

Look and feel

2023 Kia Niro EV

10/10

2022 Kia EV6

9/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 was a striking vehicle, exuding a sporty and svelte design reminiscent of a Ford Mustang Mach-E. Its lower and wider stance, visually enhanced by voluptuous curves akin to a Porsche 911, gave it a distinctive presence. The EV6 featured a highback tail with a lip spoiler doubling as a lightbar, and its wheels were pushed to the corners, creating a dynamic silhouette. The headlights squinted in a V-shaped pattern, complementing the black trim below, which mimicked sealed air intakes. The wedgy profile, with its angled roofline and twin ducts in the rear spoiler, added to its blade-sharp appearance, while the matte silver paint provided a smooth and silken finish.

In contrast, the 2023 Kia Niro EV shared its design with the Niro Hybrid and PHEV models, yet it stood out among entry-level EVs with unique styling features. The Niro EV's headlights and grille were divided into two segments, with LED daytime running lights framing a spaghettified version of Kia’s “Tiger Nose” grille. It sported 17-inch alloy wheels and a centrally located charge port for easy access. The rear featured tall, boomerang-like vertical taillights and vents called “Air Blades,” contributing to a 0.29 coefficient of drag. While not as aerodynamic as some competitors, the Niro EV's upright shape offered a refreshing contrast to the pod-like silhouettes of other small EVs.

Performance

2022 Kia EV6

7/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 was a powerhouse, especially in its GT-Line e-AWD variant, which boasted 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. With a 77-kilowatt-hour battery, it accelerated to 60 mph in a claimed 4.6 seconds, offering a thrilling driving experience. The top-power GT trim promised even more with 576 hp and a sub-3.5-second 0-60 time. The EV6's dual-motor setup provided seamless torque distribution, enhancing its performance on various terrains. However, its range was a concern, particularly in cold weather, where it fell short of its 274-mile EPA estimate, achieving only 65 percent of that range in real-world conditions.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV, with its 64.8-kilowatt-hour battery and single electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, offered a more modest performance. It accelerated from 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds, providing a smooth and refined driving experience. While it lacked the nimble feel of some competitors, the Niro EV's power delivery was smoother than its hybrid counterparts, and it handled well with a planted feel. However, it didn't set new standards for EV handling or ride quality.

Form and function

2023 Kia Niro EV

7/10

2022 Kia EV6

7/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 offered a spacious interior with generous legroom and headroom, thanks to its low floor. The rear seats reclined and featured air vents and optional heated cushions, creating an airy and open space. However, its cargo space was limited, with 24 cubic feet behind the seats and 50 cubic feet when folded. The EV6 also featured innovative design elements like pop-out door handles and a twisting rotary shifter, but its combined climate and stereo controls could be frustrating to use while driving.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV provided more headroom and legroom than some competitors, with 22.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 63.7 cubic feet with them down. While it lacked a true frunk, it offered a small storage compartment under the hood. In-cabin storage was limited, but it featured large cupholders and a decent-sized phone tray. The Niro EV's interior design was creative, with sustainable materials like recycled wallpaper and eucalyptus leaves used throughout.

Technology

2023 Kia Niro EV

9/10

2022 Kia EV6

8/10

The 2022 Kia EV6 featured a user-friendly infotainment system with dual 12-inch screens, though it required a wired connection for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It offered advanced features like a 360-degree camera, augmented reality HUD, and a remote parking system. However, Kia Connect features were disabled for Massachusetts residents due to compliance issues.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV came with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system, offering wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It shared a touch control panel with the Kia Sportage, requiring toggling between functions for adjustments. The Niro EV also featured Digital Key 2.0 functionality, compatible with select devices.

Safety

2023 Kia Niro EV

9/10

2022 Kia EV6

7/10
The 2022 Kia EV6 came equipped with impressive safety tech, including HDA, lane-keeping, cyclist and pedestrian detection, and more. However, it lacked published test results from U.S. agencies. The 2023 Kia Niro EV offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assist features, including forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It also featured Highway Driving Assist II on higher trims, though crash-test ratings were not yet available.
