2024 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The Rogue is Nissan’s entry into a crowded compact crossover SUV segment that includes well-known models like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4, to name a few. The 2024 Nissan Rogue debuts refreshed styling and gets a tech overhaul highlighted by Google built-in apps, marking their first appearance in a Nissan.

Verdict: New tech features may be the headline, but an impressive powertrain and interior are what really make the 2024 Nissan Rogue stand out.

2024 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The Toyota Sequoia gained a standard hybrid powertrain when it entered its third generation, just last year. While the tech updates were widely celebrated and the facelift considered unobjectionable even by its harshest critics, the move to hybrid power proved to be something of a mixed bag. Increased towing and hauling power bolstered the obvious advantage of improved fuel economy, but impact was somewhat dampened by the reduction in cargo and third-row space to accommodate the new battery.

Verdict: The Sequoia may not be the most capable full-size SUV in the segment, and it’s certainly not the most spacious. It is, however, the only hybrid in its class, and it offers a blend of seating capacity, towing power, and fuel efficiency you won’t find elsewhere-at least, not if you don’t want to go diesel.

2024 Nissan Rogue

8/10

2024 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2024 Nissan Rogue underwent its first major styling update since the 2021 model year. It retained its lineup of trim levels, including S, SV, SL, and Platinum models. The Rogue featured a new, larger grille that seamlessly integrated with its distinctive stack headlights and daytime running lights. While Nissan claimed updates to the rear fascia, the primary change was in the redesigned inner taillight elements. The Rogue SV received a new 18-inch wheel design, while the Platinum model boasted a 19-inch machined-finish look. The Platinum trim also offered more black exterior trim and an optional black roof. Inside, the Rogue's dashboard was updated to accommodate a new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, enhancing its premium feel. The Rogue SV models received new materials throughout the interior, and most models came with dual-zone automatic climate control. The upscale interior design of the Rogue Platinum, with leather seats and quilted stitching, contributed to its premium appeal.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia shared its platform and several design cues with the Tundra pickup, including hexagonal grilles, wheel arches, and strong fender creases. The Sequoia's appearance varied significantly with exterior color choices. The top-trim Capstone model, with its chrome brightwork, appeared somewhat dated in Celestial Silver but transformed into a more rugged look with the punchy Solar Octane orange and black accents. Inside, the Sequoia closely resembled the Tundra and other contemporary Toyota vehicles, featuring a blocky, geometric dashboard layout with physical dials and buttons for volume and climate control. The Sequoia Capstone boasted semi-aniline leather upholstery, while other trims offered fabric, SofTex, or leather seating surfaces. The Sequoia's interior was spacious, with power-adjustable front seats across the lineup and a power-tilt and -slide moonroof standard on higher trims.

Performance

2024 Nissan Rogue

6/10

2024 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2024 Nissan Rogue featured a unique powertrain with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, part of Nissan's VC-Turbo lineup. This engine could vary its compression ratio to prioritize power or fuel economy. With 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque, the Rogue's engine outperformed many competitors, including the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. However, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) was less impressive, as it was slow to transfer power to the wheels. The Rogue came standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available. While the engine's performance was commendable, the Rogue's suspension felt firmer than expected, affecting ride quality without improving handling. Despite its quiet cabin, the Rogue's droning exhaust note was a drawback.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia was exclusively offered in a hybrid format, utilizing Toyota's iForce MAX hybrid powertrain. This system combined a twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor, delivering 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, a significant increase over its V8 predecessor. The Sequoia's fuel economy improved to 20 mpg combined with four-wheel drive. The TRD Pro trim was available only with 4WD, while other trims offered 4WD as an option. The 10-speed automatic transmission operated smoothly, and the Sequoia's on-road handling was adequate for its class. The TRD Off-Road package added adventure-ready features, including all-terrain tires and an off-road suspension. The Sequoia's maximum towing capacity increased to 9,520 pounds, with several towing-related upgrades available.

Form and function

2024 Nissan Rogue

8/10

2024 Toyota Sequoia

5/10

The 2024 Nissan Rogue offered competitive passenger space, with differences primarily in legroom compared to rivals like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. The Rogue provided 36.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place and 74.1 cubic feet with them folded, offering less space than some competitors but more than others. The optional Divide-N-Hide system allowed for flexible cargo configurations, and the Rogue featured a power liftgate on higher trims. The center console provided additional storage options, though accessing the lower storage tray was somewhat awkward.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia featured automatic power-deploying running boards on the Capstone and Platinum trims, aiding entry for shorter passengers. The Sequoia offered a maximum of 86.9 cubic feet of cargo space with both second- and third-row seats folded. The third-row seats could be adjusted for cargo space, but folding them did not create a flat load floor due to the hybrid powertrain's battery pack. The Sequoia's interior dimensions placed it behind some rivals in terms of legroom, but it offered second-row captain's chairs on higher trims for added comfort.

Technology

The 2024 Nissan Rogue came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on lower trims, while SL and Platinum models received a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless connectivity. The Rogue was the first Nissan to feature Google built-in software, offering Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play app store. However, connectivity was free for only five years, and a data plan was required for third-party apps. The dual 12.3-inch screen setup improved the infotainment experience, though the touchscreen was occasionally slow to boot up. The Rogue included multiple USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad on higher trims. Nissan extended the free trial period for its Nissan Connect Services to three years, offering features like remote door lock/unlock and vehicle health reports.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia's Capstone trim was equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, accessible through an 8-inch touchscreen on the SR5 trim and a 14-inch screen on higher trims. The Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system prioritized functionality over flashy design. The Sequoia featured a full-color 12.3-inch driver-information display and a Panoramic View monitor as standard. A 10-inch color head-up display was available on higher trims, and the 14-speaker JBL Premium Audio system was standard on Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone trims.

Safety

2024 Toyota Sequoia

10/10

The 2024 Nissan Rogue received favorable safety scores from the IIHS, with top "Good" ratings in several crash tests and an "Acceptable" rating in the updated side-impact test. It also earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. Standard driver-assist features included automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. ProPilot Assist, Nissan's advanced driver assistance system, was available on higher trims, offering automated lane centering for highway driving.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia came standard with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 2.5 suite, including a pre-collision system, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. Front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring with Trailer Merge Warning were also standard. The Tow Technology Package, available on certain trims, added features like a digital rearview mirror and trailer backup guide. As of this writing, the Sequoia had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA, but the similar Toyota Tundra earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation.
