The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS exuded a refined elegance with its modern design, which, while understated, promised longevity. The GLS 450 test vehicle featured striking 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille, and polished metal accents, all complemented by a Twilight Blue paint. Inside, the GLS 450 boasted a Bahia Brown over Black interior with Grey Oak trim, contrast stitching, and polished aluminum accents, creating a luxurious environment. The GLS 450 was the entry-level model, powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology. Upgrades included the AMG Line and Exclusive Trim Packages, bringing the MSRP to $97,730.

The 2025 Hyundai Palisade stood out with its bold design, especially after a 2023 refresh that introduced a more angular look. The Palisade's design was both distinctive and upscale, offering great value. Inside, even the base SE trim provided a modern and upscale feel. The Calligraphy trim featured premium leather, artificial suede, and luxury touches. The Palisade was available in seven trims, with prices ranging from $37,200 to $54,500. Our test vehicle, with Calligraphy trim and AWD, had an MSRP of $55,205.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with its 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, delivered smooth and swift acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. Its mild-hybrid system added an instant 148 lb-ft of torque, enhancing responsiveness. A nine-speed automatic transmission and variable 4Matic AWD system offered tailored driving modes. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a combined fuel economy of 21 mpg. The adaptive air suspension and massive tires contributed to its athleticism, while the brakes provided smooth stops. Off-road capabilities were enhanced with an Off-Road menu in MBUX.

The 2025 Hyundai Palisade featured a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission powered the front wheels, with optional AWD. The Palisade had a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and averaged 22 mpg in combined driving. The ride was firm at lower speeds but smoother on highways. The powertrain was satisfying, with smooth shifts and a refined V6. Despite not being fuel-efficient, the Palisade offered a delightful driving experience. The brakes were well-calibrated, and the steering and suspension provided a reasonable road feel.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, with the AMG Line package, had sportier styling but side sill trim that could be inconvenient. The front seats offered comfort with leather surfaces, heating, ventilation, and massage programs. The second-row captain’s chairs provided excellent thigh support and legroom. Accessing the third row was challenging, and space was snug for adults. Cargo space was practical, with 17.4 cubic feet behind the third row and a maximum of 84.7 cubic feet.

The 2025 Hyundai Palisade offered three rows of seats, with our test vehicle featuring a seven-passenger arrangement. The Calligraphy trim included Nappa leather, power-adjustable front seats, and a massaging driver’s seat. The second-row captain’s chairs were heated and ventilated, with good legroom. The third row was also heated, with USB-C ports and air vents. Storage was generous, with thoughtful features like adjustable cupholders and a Smart Liftgate. Cargo space was ample, with 18 cubic feet behind the third row and a maximum of 86.4 cubic feet.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the latest MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch displays. The system was intuitive, with improved graphics and themes. However, touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel and center console caused occasional frustration. The Burmester surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos was impressive, and MBUX offered outstanding voice recognition and augmented reality navigation.

The 2025 Hyundai Palisade's technology, though slightly dated, was fully functional. It included a 12.3-inch digital driver display and touchscreen infotainment system. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto required a cable, the system offered Bluetooth support, wireless charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The voice recognition system was effective, and the Harman Kardon audio system provided excellent sound. Additional features included Hyundai Pay and a digital rearview mirror.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with over 20 significant safety features, adjustable through MBUX. The ADAS was praised for its subtle and smooth operation, handling various driving conditions with ease. The lane-centering assist was reliable, with only one minor issue during testing.

The 2025 Hyundai Palisade included standard safety features under Hyundai SmartSense, such as forward collision warning and lane-keeping assist. The HDA system worked well, though the lane-keeping assist was less favorable. The Palisade earned a Top Safety Pick from IIHS through 2024 but missed it in 2025 due to a Poor rating in a new test.
