2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS exuded a refined elegance that, while understated, promised longevity in its appeal. Our GLS 450 test model featured striking 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille, and polished metal accents, all complemented by a Twilight Blue paint job. Inside, the GLS 450 boasted a Bahia Brown over Black interior with natural-grain Grey Oak, contrast stitching, and polished aluminum accents, creating a luxurious environment typical of Mercedes. The GLS 450, the entry-level model, came with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, offering a balance of performance and efficiency. Our test vehicle included several premium packages, bringing the MSRP to $97,730.

In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered a more rugged appeal, especially with the new Z71 trim designed for moderate off-roading. During our test drive near Atlanta, the Z71 impressed with its capability on varied terrains, though it wasn't intended for extreme off-road adventures. The Traverse lineup started with the LS trim at $38,995, reaching up to $55,595 for the RS model. Our Z71 test vehicle, priced at $47,795, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint. Inside, the Jet Black interior with "Torch Red" accents provided a sporty feel, and the standard cloth seats offered comfort and breathability.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 delivered a smooth and powerful driving experience with its 375-horsepower engine and 369 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, aided by a mild-hybrid system that added an instant 148 lb-ft of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission and variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system offered versatility with Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual driving modes. The GLS 450's towing capacity was 7,700 pounds, and it achieved a fuel economy of 21 mpg combined. The adaptive air suspension and massive tires contributed to its athleticism, while the brakes provided smooth stops. Off-road capabilities were enhanced by the Off-Road menu in MBUX and an optional Off-Road Package for the GLS 580.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous V6 engine with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered more power and torque than its predecessor. The Traverse Z71 featured an advanced AWD system with a dual-clutch arrangement for better grip in slippery conditions. On highways and twisty roads, the Traverse provided adequate acceleration and a pleasant exhaust note. The steering was responsive, though the vehicle's length was noticeable in tight spaces. The ride quality was excellent, even with all-terrain tires and extra ground clearance. The brakes were progressive, and the stop-and-start feature was seamless. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city to 26 mpg highway.

Form and function

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a luxurious interior with supple leather surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, and a commanding view. The Exclusive Trim Package added heated rear seats and a four-zone climate control system. The second-row captain’s chairs provided comfort, though accessing the third row was cumbersome. The third-row space was snug for adults but suitable for children. Cargo space was practical, with 17.4 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 84.7 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse provided flexible seating configurations, with the LS model offering seating for eight and higher trims featuring captain’s chairs. The Smart Slide second-row seats improved access to the third row, which accommodated average-size adults. The power-folding third row and Autosense power liftgate enhanced cargo capacity, which reached 96 cubic feet with seats folded. Storage options included a hidden area under the center console and an underfloor bin in the cargo bay. Visibility was generally good, though the third row felt more enclosed.

Technology

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the latest MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch displays. The system offered improved graphics and themes, though touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel and center console caused occasional frustration. The Burmester surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos provided excellent audio quality. MBUX's intuitive touchscreen operation and voice recognition were highlights, though the touchpad's placement was less ideal.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse introduced a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, complemented by an 11-inch digital instrument display. The system ran on Google-based software, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The wireless charging pad was effective, and physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were appreciated. Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, was available for the first time, expanding its functionality to single-lane roads.

Safety

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS came equipped with over 20 significant safety features, adjustable through MBUX. The advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) were praised for their subtle and smooth operation, handling various driving conditions with ease. The lane-centering assist and adaptive cruise control performed well, though there was a single instance of temporary disengagement.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not yet been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but it offered a comprehensive suite of driver aids as standard. These included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and more. While we didn't test these systems, their presence provided reassurance during our drive.
