2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

2025 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

The 2025 Atlas is Volkswagen’s midsize, three-row crossover SUV. It debuted for the 2018 model year, designed specifically for Americans and manufactured in VW’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, assembly plant. Over the years, it has received numerous updates to keep it fresh and technologically competitive, most recently for 2024, when styling, powertrain, and tech upgrades were introduced. The 2025 Atlas adds standard automatic high-beam headlights and wireless charging in addition to two new color choices.

Verdict: This family-sized SUV has more interior space than most rivals, making the 2025 VW Atlas a great choice if passenger and cargo room are high on your list of requirements. However, unimpressive fuel economy, dissatisfying ride quality, and a sometimes-infuriating infotainment interface could have you mapping out alternatives to an Atlas.

Look and feel

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

2025 Volkswagen Atlas

8/10

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse was offered in four trims: LS, LT, Z71, and RS. The Z71 was a new addition, designed for those interested in moderate off-roading. During test drives near Atlanta, it was clear that the Z71 wasn't built for extreme trails like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco but could handle rugged terrain. Pricing started at $38,995 for the LS and went up to $55,595 for the RS, with the Z71 starting at $47,795. The Z71 featured 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint, with a Jet Black interior accented by "Torch Red" details. The standard cloth seats were comfortable, though synthetic leather was available for an extra cost.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas came in five trims: SE, SE with Technology, Peak Edition, SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line. The Peak Edition had an off-road look, while the SEL Premium R-Line was sporty with extensive standard equipment. Prices ranged from $38,200 to $53,205, excluding a $1,425 destination charge. The test model, an SEL Premium R-Line, was in Mountain Lake Blue with a Shetland Beige leather interior. It featured 21-inch wheels and a polished aluminum design, giving it a muscular and upscale appearance. The interior boasted diamond-stitched leather and metallic accents, though touch-sensitive controls for temperature and volume were less satisfying.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered more power and torque than the V6. The Z71 trim had an advanced AWD system with a dual-clutch arrangement. The Traverse provided acceptable acceleration and a pleasant exhaust growl. Its steering was adequate, though the vehicle's length was noticeable. The ride was smooth, even with all-terrain tires, and the brakes were progressive. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city to 26 mpg highway for FWD models.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas switched to a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Despite initial concerns, the engine proved refined, similar to the Audi Q7's base engine. The Atlas offered an eight-speed automatic transmission with FWD or AWD. On a test loop in California, it returned 15.5 mpg in the city and 19.2 mpg overall. The ride quality was less impressive, with a brittle suspension and excessive body motions. However, handling was predictable, and the brakes performed well under stress.

Form and function

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse's base LS model seated eight, while higher trims offered seven seats with captain’s chairs. The third row was suitable for average-sized adults, and Smart Slide second-row seats improved access. Cargo space was 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 96 cubic feet with seats folded. Storage options included a hidden area under the center console and an underfloor bin in the cargo bay. Visibility was generally good, though the third row felt a bit enclosed.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in comfort and space, with a notably comfortable third row. The SEL Premium R-Line featured heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats. Visibility was excellent, aided by a surround-view camera. The second row accommodated three adults comfortably, with ample legroom and a panoramic sunroof. Access to the third row was easy, and storage was plentiful across all rows. Cargo space was 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 96.6 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse featured a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 11-inch digital instrument display. The system ran on Google-based software with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Physical controls for volume and HVAC were appreciated, though some controls were buried in the infotainment system. Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, was available, expanding its functionality to more roads.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas used the MIB3 system with a 12-inch touchscreen. It lacked traditional controls, relying on touch-sensitive buttons. The native voice assistant was unreliable, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provided better functionality. The Harman Kardon audio system was impressive, though the MIB3 system had user-experience glitches.

The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas featured IQ.Drive with Front Assist, Active Side Assist, Lane Assist, and more. It included adaptive cruise control and a rear cross-traffic alert. The Atlas earned a five-star safety rating from NHTSA and was a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick.
