2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

2024 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

Verdict: Lexus has sold three-row SUVs in the past. But they were either originally engineered for serious off-roading (GX), too expensive (LX), or too cramped for third-row passengers (RX L). The 2024 Lexus TX is none of these things, making it perfect for the typical three-row luxury SUV buyer who spends almost all their time on paved roads. Overall, based on our week testing a TX 350 Luxury model, this new Lexus SUV gets most things right.

Look and feel

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Volvo XC90 marked a significant departure from Volvo's earlier, boxy designs. It presented a purposeful yet understated appearance, with a stout front end and an assertive grille that avoided being overly flashy. The recognizable “Thor’s Hammer” headlights added a modern touch absent in older models. The XC90 maintained a rectilinear shape but had evolved far beyond its toaster-like predecessors. The test vehicle featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Gray paint with rich undertones, enhancing its elegant exterior. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with two-tone leather, metal speaker covers, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist interior design, complemented by wood deco inlays, provided a clean and sophisticated look.

In contrast, the 2024 Lexus TX, based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, offered a distinct luxury SUV experience. The TX's styling was more conservative, appealing to those who found previous Lexus designs too bold. The test model, in Luxury trim, featured 22-inch wheels that enhanced its upscale appearance. The TX came in various models, with prices ranging from $55,050 to $69,350. The interior of the TX 350 Luxury model included premium leather upholstery and ambient lighting, though the dark Peppercorn interior felt somewhat gloomy. Despite this, the TX provided a luxurious feel, with a habitable third-row seat and ample cargo space, making it a practical choice for families.

Performance

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced new B5 and B6 engines with mild-hybrid technology, replacing older powertrains. The B5 engine produced 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the B6 offered 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. These engines improved fuel efficiency slightly and provided a smoother driving experience. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission performed well, and the vehicle handled corners with minimal roll. Despite its size, the XC90 delivered a reserved yet enjoyable driving experience, with excellent insulation reducing road noise. The brakes inspired confidence, and the vehicle's simplicity in driving dynamics appealed to those preferring straightforward operation.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated to 60 mph in about eight seconds, offering adequate performance for typical driving situations. The TX 350 FWD achieved an EPA rating of 23 mpg in combined driving, though testing showed an average of 20.4 mpg. The AWD option improved traction but slightly reduced fuel economy. The TX 350's suspension provided a comfortable ride, with commendable body motion control and accurate steering. The interior remained quiet on highways, though the brake pedal felt soft in the pre-production test vehicle.

Form and function

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

2024 Lexus TX

8/10

The 2023 Volvo XC90 offered a peaceful front-seat experience, though its Scandinavian minimalism led to limited storage space. The lack of a dedicated phone space and small center console bin were notable drawbacks. The second row was comfortable but challenging to adjust, and accessing the third row was difficult with the standard bench seat. Cargo space measured 12.5 cubic feet with all seats up, expanding to 65.5 cubic feet with seats folded, falling short of some competitors. Despite its smaller size, the XC90 drove like a more compact vehicle, enhancing maneuverability.

The 2024 Lexus TX addressed previous Lexus three-row SUV shortcomings, offering a comfortable and spacious interior. The TX 350 Luxury model included premium features like heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. The third-row seat accommodated adults, and the TX provided 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats up, expanding to 97 cubic feet with seats folded. The TX featured numerous storage options, though some lacked lining, potentially causing noise. The split front center armrest design was less practical, but overall, the TX offered impressive utility and comfort.

Technology

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Volvo XC90 featured a 9-inch touchscreen with Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. The system's natural-language recognition enhanced user experience, though reliance on the touchscreen for key functions could be frustrating. The minimalist design lacked physical buttons, requiring adjustment for new users. Despite this, the tech offerings were advanced and user-friendly over time.

The 2024 Lexus TX included a Technology Package with a 12.3-inch digital panel, head-up display, and more. However, unmarked steering wheel controls and head-up display visibility issues detracted from the experience. The Lexus Interface infotainment system, with a 14-inch touchscreen, offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system's digital assistant and connectivity features were impressive, and the optional Mark Levinson sound system provided excellent audio quality.

Safety

2023 Volvo XC90

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for safety, earning a five-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Pilot Assist technology, providing comprehensive driver support.

The 2024 Lexus TX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and more. Proactive Drive Assist offered additional safety, though its transparency was questionable. The TX also included blind-spot monitoring and optional parking sensors, with traffic jam assist providing hands-free driving at low speeds.
