2023 Volkswagen Jetta Reviews Summary

The popularity of sedans such as the Jetta might have tumbled as buyers flock to big SUVs and even bigger pickups, but there's still plenty to like about VW's family car.

The base 1.5-litre gas engine's 158 horsepower is plenty for a front-drive family car, and can be paired with either manual or automatic transmission. And for those who get a kick from driving, there's the sportier Jetta GLI with retuned suspension and a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine pumping out 228 horsepower.

All 2023 Jettas feature a pleasant if not very exciting interior design. To make it as smart as possible, we recommend going for SEL trim or above to get VW's upgraded 10.25-inch digital dials and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen.

2024 Nissan Sentra Reviews Summary

Verdict: The Sentra sits between the Versa and Altima in Nissan’s sedan lineup, making it the automaker’s entry into a diminished but still competitive compact-sedan segment that includes the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, and Volkswagen Jetta. For 2024, the Sentra gets refreshed styling and some mechanical changes for improved fuel economy. The Sentra is an honest compact sedan that falls short in some areas, but excels in value.

Look and feel

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

7/10

2024 Nissan Sentra

9/10

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta presented a traditional four-door sedan option, though it faced competition from more utility-focused alternatives like the VW Taos crossover SUV and more stylish options such as the Mazda3 Hatchback. Available in S, Sport, SE, SEL, and GLI trims, the Jetta's pricing ranged from $20,665 to $31,585, excluding destination charges. The Jetta SEL, tested in Platinum Gray Metallic with a Volcano Brown over Titan Black interior, had an MSRP of $29,480. While the Jetta's design was conservative and inoffensive, it lacked the symmetry and balance of previous generations. Inside, the SEL trim offered an upscale feel with features like ambient lighting, genuine leather upholstery, and larger digital screens, providing a sense of luxury at a sub-$30,000 price point.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra, updated with a wider grille and new styling elements, maintained a balance between flair and practicality. The Sentra's design avoided the eccentricity of some competitors while offering more style than others. The trim levels remained consistent with S, SV, and SR grades, with the SR trim featuring 18-inch wheels and model-specific styling. The interior showcased large round air vents inspired by the Z sports car and a dashboard that framed the central touchscreen. The Sentra SR included red-orange accent stitching and a flat-bottom steering wheel, with material quality typical for an entry-level car but with distinctive design elements.

Performance

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

2024 Nissan Sentra

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta, with its German-inspired driving dynamics, offered a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The Jetta's nimble handling and responsive steering made it suitable for urban and suburban environments. However, the automatic transmission exhibited a delay in acceleration, which could be mitigated by using the Sport mode, albeit at the cost of fuel efficiency. The Jetta SEL achieved an average of 30 mpg in testing, slightly below the EPA rating of 33 mpg. Despite these quirks, the Jetta SEL provided a rewarding driving experience with accurate steering, faithful brakes, and impressive all-season tires.

In contrast, the 2024 Nissan Sentra focused on efficiency with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. The mandatory CVT, reengineered for smoother operation and improved fuel efficiency, was complemented by an engine start-stop system. The Sentra's steering offered feedback and precision, while the suspension provided a comfortable ride. However, the CVT occasionally allowed an unexpected surge of acceleration. Despite this, the Sentra remained a pleasant drive, with a laid-back feel that didn't compromise passenger comfort.

Form and function

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

2024 Nissan Sentra

7/10

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta, straddling the compact and midsize sedan segments, offered ample space for a family of four. The interior featured an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Jetta's trunk provided 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space, nearly matching some midsize sedans. The 60/40-split folding back seat allowed for longer items, while generous storage spaces accommodated various needs. However, the front passenger seat lacked a height adjuster, and rear air conditioning vents were absent.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra provided decent interior space, particularly in the front row, with Zero Gravity seats offering comfort. The Sentra excelled in front-seat legroom but lagged in rear-seat legroom compared to rivals. The interior design included low window sills and a slim dashboard for excellent forward visibility. The Sentra's trunk offered 14.3 cubic feet of space, with a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat for longer items. The All-Weather Package added features like heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, enhancing comfort in cold weather.

Technology

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta SEL featured a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with proximity-sensing and shortcut tiles. While the system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the native voice recognition required a Car-Net subscription for advanced features. Car-Net provided a Wi-Fi hotspot and five years of complimentary access to safety and remote features. The Beats Audio premium sound system, however, was less satisfying compared to previous Fender systems.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra's tech offerings included a 7-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display in the base model, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. SV and SR models upgraded to an 8-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker audio system, with an available eight-speaker Bose system in the Premium Package. While the Sentra's screens were functional, the graphics appeared dated compared to competitors. The presence of large volume and tuning knobs was a practical advantage.

Safety

2024 Nissan Sentra

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta SE and SEL came with the IQ.Drive package, offering advanced driving assistance systems like Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, performing well on challenging roads. Emergency Assist could identify an unresponsive driver and safely stop the car. The Jetta received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA but had mixed results in IIHS tests, with a Poor rating in a new frontal-impact crash test.

The 2024 Nissan Sentra's safety ratings were incomplete, with mixed results from the IIHS. It received a Good rating in the original side-impact test but only Acceptable in the updated version. The Sentra's headlights were rated Poor, and its front crash prevention scored Advanced in daytime but Basic at night. The NHTSA provided five-star ratings for rollover and side crash tests. The Sentra included standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 features, with adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system available on higher trims.
