2023 Volkswagen Jetta Reviews Summary

The popularity of sedans such as the Jetta might have tumbled as buyers flock to big SUVs and even bigger pickups, but there's still plenty to like about VW's family car.

The base 1.5-litre gas engine's 158 horsepower is plenty for a front-drive family car, and can be paired with either manual or automatic transmission. And for those who get a kick from driving, there's the sportier Jetta GLI with retuned suspension and a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine pumping out 228 horsepower.

All 2023 Jettas feature a pleasant if not very exciting interior design. To make it as smart as possible, we recommend going for SEL trim or above to get VW's upgraded 10.25-inch digital dials and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen.

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Reviews Summary

Long the yardstick against which its rivals are measured, the 2024 Mercedes E-Class gets a redesign. In addition to understated styling that can stand the test of time, the elegant interior adds an infusion of technology that sets new standards in the segment. Mild-hybrid engines, standard all-wheel drive, the return of the All-Terrain wagon, and an upcoming plug-in hybrid massaged for performance by AMG are all on the new E-Class menu.

Verdict: Based on observations from several days spent with the E 350 4Matic sedan, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains at the top of its midsize luxury sedan game when equipped with all the extras. Refined, sophisticated, and soothing to drive, it embodies what a car like this should be.

Look and feel

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

9/10

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta presented a traditional sedan option, though its appeal was questioned against more stylish or utilitarian alternatives like the VW Taos or Mazda3 Hatchback. Available in multiple trims, the Jetta ranged from $20,665 to $31,585, excluding destination charges. The SEL trim, tested in Platinum Gray Metallic, offered an upscale feel with features like ambient lighting and genuine leather upholstery, all for $29,480. Despite its conservative design, the Jetta's interior channeled a touch of luxury, reminiscent of the Audi brand.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class broke away from the cold, technical designs of modern vehicles, showcasing elegant proportions and bold detailing. Available in E 350 4Matic and E 450 4Matic models, prices started at $62,300, plus destination charges. Our test E 350 4Matic, priced at $82,450, featured luxurious elements like Tonka Brown Nappa leather and a Superscreen triple-display. The E-Class combined classic luxury with modern technology, offering a plush and sophisticated driving experience.

Performance

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

9/10

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta, with its 1.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, delivered 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It offered a nimble driving experience with responsive steering and a compliant suspension. However, the automatic transmission exhibited a delay in acceleration, which could be mitigated by using the Sport mode, albeit at the cost of fuel efficiency. The Jetta SEL averaged 30 mpg, slightly below the EPA's 33 mpg estimate. Despite these quirks, the Jetta's handling and tire performance impressed during testing.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, specifically the E 350 4Matic, featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The E 450 4Matic offered even more power with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. Both models included a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic AWD. The E 350's fuel economy fell short of expectations, averaging 23.8 mpg against the EPA's 27 mpg. Equipped with the Airmatic Package, the E-Class provided a smooth, luxurious ride, excelling in comfort and quietness.

Form and function

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

8/10

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta defied perceptions of being too small, comfortably accommodating a family of four. It offered generous interior storage and a spacious trunk with 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space. The SEL trim featured an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats, though the front passenger seat lacked height adjustment. The rear seats provided ample legroom and comfort, with heated seats as a notable feature.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, while luxurious, had some challenges with rear seat access due to intrusive wheel wells. The interior offered supportive seats with options for MB-Tex, leather, or Nappa leather upholstery. Practical storage solutions included sizable door pockets and a roomy center console. The trunk, with 19.1 cubic feet of space, accommodated full-size suitcases, though the measurement seemed optimistic. The 40/20/40-split folding rear seat added versatility.

Technology

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta SEL featured a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. While not as advanced as Audi's systems, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment system had some usability quirks, and the voice recognition required Car-Net service upgrades for enhanced functionality. The SEL trim included a Beats Audio system, though it was less satisfying compared to previous Fender systems.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class showcased the third-generation MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital display and a 14.4-inch touchscreen. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and featured a navigation system with augmented video technology. The MBUX allowed for personalized driver profiles and routines, while the optional Superscreen Package added a passenger display and video camera. The Burmester 4D surround-sound system offered exceptional audio quality.

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta SE and SEL came with IQ.Drive, a suite of advanced driving assistance systems. Travel Assist combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, performing well on challenging roads. Emergency Assist was a standout feature, capable of stopping the car safely if the driver was unresponsive. The Jetta received a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA but had mixed results in IIHS tests.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class offered numerous safety features, with the Driver Assistance Package adding 15 advanced systems. Highlights included Pre-Safe features and Active Emergency Stop Assist. The ADAS performed well, though some systems like Automatic Lane Change and Speed Limit Assist were less suited for fast-flowing traffic. The lane-keeping assist system was particularly effective, providing reliable support during testing.
