2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

It may be all-new for 2023, but the GLC's redesign is so conservative, it's hard to tell. Bigger changes can be found inside and the overall upgrades keep it at the top of the small luxury SUV class. The previous-generation GLC Coupe returns unchanged but replacements are in the works.

2024 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

Verdict: The Jeep Wrangler is still one of the best off-roading vehicles available, and the 4xe's plug-in hybrid powertrain offers fuel-saving capability, along with plenty of low-end, all-electric torque. While still a bit of a bear to drive on paved roads, few vehicles offer the sort of style and rugged performance that a Wrangler 4xe does.

The Jeep Wrangler has been the star of the off-roading show for decades, only recently facing real competition in the form of the Ford Bronco. Now five years into its fourth generation, the venerable Wrangler gets a mid-cycle refresh that focuses on technology, safety, and refinement—with just a splash of upgraded capability thrown in for good measure.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2024 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class presented a blend of new and familiar elements. The GLC 300 was redesigned, while the Coupe models carried over from the previous year, with new Coupes expected for the 2024 model year. The changes in the standard GLC 300 were subtle, with the most noticeable being the narrower taillights. Despite these updates, the GLC maintained its classic and timeless design, which had led the small luxury SUV class for much of its production run. The interior saw a more significant transformation, aligning with newer Mercedes models, featuring a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and a tablet-like instrument panel. The materials and construction remained top-notch, offering a simpler and cleaner cockpit design compared to rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Lexus RX.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler retained its iconic burly, body-on-frame look, with new features like a redesigned grille and an integrated windshield antenna. The Wrangler offered a variety of roof options, including soft-top, hard top, and power-retractable sunroof configurations. The interior was rugged yet functional, with new 12-way power adjustable front seats and a 30-amp Power Box in the 4xe model. The Wrangler's towing capacity increased to 5,000 pounds for specific models, enhancing its utility. Despite its off-road prowess, the Wrangler's ride quality on pavement remained bumpy, though improvements in sound deadening made the cabin quieter.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

6/10

2024 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It featured a nine-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive as standard, and 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option. The GLC 300 accelerated smoothly, reaching 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, offering a comfortable ride with a nearly silent cabin. The GLC 4Matic Coupe continued with its older engine, matching the GLC 300's performance, while the AMG GLC 43 Coupe boasted a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 385 horsepower, achieving 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of powertrains, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower, a plug-in hybrid version with 375 horsepower, a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower, and a 6.4-liter V8 with 470 horsepower. The Wrangler featured various transfer cases for different off-road capabilities, with the Rubicon trim offering the Rock-Trac transfer case. The 4xe PHEV model combined a turbo engine with electric motors, providing 21 miles of all-electric range. The Wrangler's solid axles and locking differentials ensured excellent off-road performance, while the 392 trim delivered thrilling speed. However, the Wrangler's ride quality on pavement was less refined, with vague steering and a bumpy ride.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2024 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC offered comfortable front seats with ample adjustment options and high-quality synthetic leather upholstery. The interior provided sufficient storage space, though the piano black trim attracted dust and fingerprints. The GLC's front seats accommodated taller passengers, while the rear seats offered adequate space for average adults. The standard GLC had a cargo capacity of 21.9 cubic feet, which was smaller than some rivals, but still practical. The GLC Coupe's sloping roofline reduced cargo capacity to 17.6 cubic feet and slightly impacted rear headroom.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler's interior featured heated seats and a heated steering wheel, with new 12-way power adjustable front seats. The Wrangler's towing capacity increased to 5,000 pounds for specific models, enhancing its utility. The 4xe model included a 30-amp Power Box for powering accessories. The Wrangler's interior was rugged yet functional, with improvements in sound deadening for a quieter cabin. However, the ride quality on pavement remained bumpy due to the solid front axle.

Technology

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

2024 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC featured an 11.9-inch touchscreen with sharp graphics and responsive controls. However, the screen's lower placement on the dash made it more distracting to use. The MBUX infotainment system offered excellent voice recognition, though it interrupted audio playback. The GLC included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an available Burmester 3D Surround Sound system.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler came with a 12.3-inch center infotainment screen running Uconnect5, offering cleaner graphics and a user-friendly interface. The system's speed was notably improved, especially when accessing Off-Road Pages. The Wrangler included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a wireless hotspot and dual Bluetooth phone pairing. The Trails Offroad feature provided access to over 200 trails, with the option to subscribe for more. The Wrangler also allowed users to record and share trails.

Safety

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC had not yet been rated by NHTSA or IIHS, but the previous model received high scores. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a blind-spot monitor. The optional Driver Assistance package added adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and more. The Coupe model included cross-traffic alerts and a surround-view camera.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler introduced first- and second-row side-curtain airbags. Forward collision warning was standard on most models, while other advanced driver aids were optional. The Wrangler had not yet been rated for 2024, but the 2023 model received mixed ratings from NHTSA and IIHS. The addition of side curtain airbags was expected to improve safety ratings.
