2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in the United States. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign.

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The hybrid model is part of an effort to create more space between the Sportage and the smaller Kia Seltos, which also brought increased interior space, more tech, and radical exterior styling.

The Sportage Hybrid arrives at dealerships later this year in base LX, midlevel EX, and range-topping SX-Prestige trim levels (we drove SX-Prestige for this review). Note that this isn’t the same lineup as the non-hybrid Sportage, which gets SX, X-Line, and rugged X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trim levels as well.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Reviews Summary

Summary: In terms of buzz, Ford's sporty all-electric crossover has come a long way since it first sparked outrage for appropriating the famous Mustang name. It seems most have accepted or resigned themselves to an electric Mustang, and the conversation these days seems to be all about how much owners love it-and how much Ford continues to improve it. It got Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving highway driving technology for 2023. For 2024, Ford raises the bar with a new Rally trim while also giving the rest of the lineup some key upgrades.

Verdict: Thanks to Ford's continued attention, the Mustang Mach-E is a better value proposition than ever. Best of all, the automaker has plans to look after owners of 2023 and older models as well.

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E

9/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid was built on the N3 platform, which was also used by the larger Kia Sorento, resulting in a size increase over its 2022 predecessor. It was 7.1 inches longer with a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase, enhancing rear-seat legroom. The new model was about an inch taller and half an inch wider, offering a more spacious feel. The Sportage Hybrid featured a bold design with angular LED headlights and distinctive “boomerang” LED daytime running lights, giving it a unique appearance. The interior was centered around a large optional infotainment display, with a minimalist design that was more elegant than some competitors. However, the SynTex artificial leather upholstery felt somewhat cheap, despite Kia's promotion of it as an “animal free” alternative.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E retained its sharp and distinctive styling, with an aggressive front fascia and signature tri-bar tail lights. The new Rally trim introduced unique styling elements, including LED fog lamps, a black roof, and Oxford White 19-inch wheels. The GT trim offered 20-inch wheels with various finishes, and the Bronze Appearance Package added a Sinister Bronze option. Inside, the Mach-E featured a minimalist dash with a large touchscreen and Ford Performance front seats, which were standard on the GT and Rally trims. The interior design was consistent with the sporty nature of the vehicle, and the Oxford White plastic trim on the Rally seats added a futuristic touch.

Performance

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E

8/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid was powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor, producing a combined 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The base LX trim offered standard front-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive, while the EX and SX-Prestige trims were all-wheel drive only. The powertrain provided smooth and predictable acceleration, with seamless transitions between electric and gasoline power. The Sportage Hybrid delivered a quiet and comfortable ride, aided by a well-tuned transmission and thick tire sidewalls. However, its steering felt nonlinear, particularly in Sport mode, and its maximum towing capacity was 2,000 pounds.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E offered a sporty driving experience with a firm ride, even on lower trims. The GT trim featured a MagneRide damping system, enhancing ride quality by adjusting to drive modes. The GT Performance Upgrade package increased torque to 700 lb-ft, maintaining 480 horsepower, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds. The Mach-E GT and Rally trims came with all-wheel drive, while the Select and Premium trims offered a new, lighter-weight rear eMotor for improved torque and range. The Mach-E's range varied from 250 miles for the base model to 320 miles for the Premium trim with extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive. Ford also improved DC fast-charging times, reducing the time to charge from 10 to 80% by about 20%.

Form and function

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E

9/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid offered competitive interior space, with slightly less headroom and cargo space than the non-hybrid version. It provided more front-seat headroom than the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 hybrids but less for rear passengers. The dual-level cargo floor allowed for 39.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 73.7 cubic feet with them folded. The Sportage Hybrid featured a rotary shift knob, freeing up space for a large bin with USB ports and optional wireless charging. The cupholders had adjustable rings for different cup sizes, and the center console storage bin offered decent space.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E excelled in interior space, with 34.1 cubic feet of cargo space, including a drainable frunk. Folding the rear seats expanded the cargo area to 59.7 cubic feet. The Mach-E provided ample headroom and legroom, with 38.9 inches of headroom in the front and 38.2 inches in the rear without the panoramic glass roof. The driver’s seat was power-adjustable in every trim, with ActiveX seating surfaces standard. Heated front seats were available on the base trim and standard on others, and the synthetic upholstery was enhanced with Miko inserts and performance-inspired perforation.

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid came with an 8-inch touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The EX model upgraded to a 12.3-inch touchscreen, while the SX-Prestige offered a panoramic display combining a 12.3-inch screen with a digital instrument cluster. The panoramic display was visually impressive and user-friendly, with touch controls below the screen for audio and climate settings. Hybrid models included four standard USB-C ports, with additional rear ports, wireless phone charging, and an upgraded Harman Kardon audio system available on higher trims.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E featured wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the latest SYNC 4A infotainment software operating through a 15.5-inch touchscreen. Climate controls were anchored at the bottom of the screen, with a physical wheel for stereo volume. The Mach-E included Ford’s Intelligent Range system, providing real-time range updates based on various factors. The system was designed to alleviate range anxiety, offering a cloud-based feature that considered route input, temperature, terrain, traffic, and driving history.

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid lacked crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA at the time of testing. The base LX trim included standard forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. The EX trim added blind-spot monitoring and safe-exit warning, while the SX-Prestige offered adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, a blind-spot view camera, a 360-degree camera system, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E offered BlueCruise 1.3, Ford’s hands-free highway-driving assist software, with a 90-day trial and optional subscription. The Mach-E included a 360-degree camera and the Ford CoPilot 360 suite, featuring a blind-spot information system, pre-collision assist, evasive steering assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The 2023 Mach-E earned a Top Safety Pick Award from the IIHS, with the same scores extended to the 2024 model. The NHTSA awarded five-star ratings in side crash and rollover testing for all model years, including 2024.
