2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in the United States. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign.

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The hybrid model is part of an effort to create more space between the Sportage and the smaller Kia Seltos, which also brought increased interior space, more tech, and radical exterior styling.

The Sportage Hybrid arrives at dealerships later this year in base LX, midlevel EX, and range-topping SX-Prestige trim levels (we drove SX-Prestige for this review). Note that this isn’t the same lineup as the non-hybrid Sportage, which gets SX, X-Line, and rugged X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trim levels as well.

2024 BMW X5 Reviews Summary

Our test vehicle for this review was the X5 xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the X5 midsize SUV, but it’s just one of several X5 models you can buy. Those with 40i in their name feature a satisfying turbocharged six-cylinder engine (with electric assist in the plug-in hybrid), while the M60i features a turbocharged V8 engine. Maximum performance is available in the comically fun X5 M Competition. Drive any of them, though, and it’s easy to understand why the X5 is BMW’s best-selling model.

Verdict: Newer BMWs are losing what has always made this automaker’s cars and SUVs appealing to people who like to drive. Fortunately, the 2024 BMW X5 hasn’t succumbed to the trend. In xDrive50e specification, it remains a delight to drive while supplying about 40 miles of electric-only range before its gasoline-fueled turbo six turns on.

Look and feel

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

2024 BMW X5

9/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid, built on the N3 platform, was notably larger than its predecessor, offering increased rear-seat legroom due to its longer wheelbase. The model was taller and wider, enhancing its road presence. Its bold styling, featuring angular LED headlights and distinctive "boomerang" LED daytime running lights, set it apart from other vehicles. The interior boasted a minimalist design centered around a large infotainment display, with thoughtful touches like air vents echoing the shape of the door handles. However, the SynTex artificial leather upholstery felt somewhat cheap, despite Kia's promotion of it as an "animal-free" alternative.

In contrast, the 2024 BMW X5 retained its classic styling, though the M Sport treatment was less favored. The test vehicle featured optional 21-inch wheels and a comprehensive equipment package, with a price tag of $88,075. The interior received a modern update with the BMW Curved Display, reducing physical controls while maintaining high-quality materials. The X5's cabin was a blend of modern technology and traditional BMW craftsmanship, offering a luxurious experience for its occupants.

Performance

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

2024 BMW X5

10/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid was powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This setup provided smooth and predictable acceleration, with seamless transitions between electric and gasoline power. The Sportage Hybrid offered a comfortable ride, aided by a well-tuned transmission and quiet cabin. However, its steering felt artificially heavy in Sport mode, and its towing capacity was limited to 2,000 pounds.

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e PHEV featured a new mild-hybrid system with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and a more powerful electric motor, delivering 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It boasted an electric-only range of 38 miles and impressive acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The adaptive damping air suspension masked the vehicle's weight, providing a comfortable ride even with the large 21-inch wheels. The X5 excelled in dynamic driving scenarios, offering excellent grip and steering response, while also achieving an average fuel economy of 38.8 mpg during testing.

Form and function

9/10

2024 BMW X5

8/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid offered competitive interior space, with slightly less headroom and cargo space than its non-hybrid counterpart. It provided more front-seat headroom than some rivals but less for rear passengers. The dual-level cargo floor added flexibility, with 39.5 cubic feet of space with seats up and 73.7 cubic feet with seats folded. Clever interior features included a rotary shift knob, USB ports, and adaptable cupholders.

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e accommodated five passengers with a 33.1 cubic-foot cargo area, expandable to 71.2 cubic feet. The split liftgate design offered a convenient seating area but required stretching to access deep cargo. The interior featured standard Sensafin artificial leather, with optional 20-way power-adjustable seats and a panoramic sunroof. The X5 lacked a third-row seat, a feature available in the larger BMW X7.

Technology

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims featured a 12.3-inch panoramic display, combining the infotainment screen with a digital instrument cluster. The system included touch controls and analog knobs for audio and climate adjustments, with additional USB ports and an optional Harman Kardon audio system.

The 2024 BMW X5 introduced the BMW Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital panel with a 14.9-inch touchscreen. Running on BMW Operating System 8.5, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a range of connected services. The Intelligent Personal Assistant, however, struggled with voice recognition, leading to some frustrating experiences. The optional Harman Kardon sound system provided excellent audio quality, while the head-up display effectively conveyed driving data.

Safety

7/10

2024 BMW X5

7/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid lacked crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA at the time of testing. It offered standard safety features like forward collision warning and lane keep assist, with higher trims adding adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system. The SX-Prestige trim included advanced features like Remote Smart Parking Assist and Highway Driving Assist.

The 2024 BMW X5 featured the Highway Assistant hands-free driving system, which performed well in specific conditions but occasionally engaged brakes unexpectedly. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance worked effectively, though the system's behavior in traffic could be frustrating. The X5 received high ratings from the IIHS, but lower headlight ratings prevented it from earning a safety award. The NHTSA awarded it a four-star overall crash-test rating.
