2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Reviews SummaryThe Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in the United States. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign. The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The hybrid model is part of an effort to create more space between the Sportage and the smaller Kia Seltos, which also brought increased interior space, more tech, and radical exterior styling. The Sportage Hybrid arrives at dealerships later this year in base LX, midlevel EX, and range-topping SX-Prestige trim levels (we drove SX-Prestige for this review). Note that this isn’t the same lineup as the non-hybrid Sportage, which gets SX, X-Line, and rugged X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trim levels as well.
2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews SummaryA subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few. Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain. Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid was built on the N3 platform, shared with the larger Kia Sorento, resulting in a significant size increase over its 2022 predecessor. It was 7.1 inches longer, with a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase, enhancing rear-seat legroom. The new model was also about an inch taller and half an inch wider. The Sportage Hybrid featured a bold design with angular LED headlights and distinctive "boomerang" LED daytime running lights, setting it apart from other vehicles. The interior was centered around a large optional infotainment display, with a minimalist design that was more elegant than its competitors. However, the SynTex artificial leather upholstery felt somewhat cheap, despite Kia's promotion of it as an "animal-free" alternative.
In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover that might have gone unnoticed by many. The GLE featured standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights, with a handsome Twilight Blue metallic finish and sleek 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. The interior of the GLE 450e exuded luxury, with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery and natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior color choices and trims, making the GLE's cabin one of the highest quality and most robust-looking in its segment.

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid was powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a single electric motor, producing a combined 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain delivered smooth and predictable acceleration, with a seamless transition between electric and gasoline power. The Sportage Hybrid offered a comfortable ride, aided by a well-tuned transmission and quiet cabin. However, its steering felt nonlinear, especially in Sport mode, and it had a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the GLE 450e, which combined a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total output of 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The GLE 450e accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and offered an estimated electric-only range of 40 miles. The transition between gas and electric power was nearly undetectable, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE's sophisticated steering made it feel maneuverable despite its size, and it offered a luxurious driving experience.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid offered competitive interior space, with slightly less headroom and cargo space than the non-hybrid version. It featured a dual-level cargo floor, providing 39.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place and 73.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Sportage Hybrid also had clever storage solutions, such as a rotary shift knob and adjustable cupholders.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for passengers, with a light and airy cabin feel. It offered 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive with rivals like the BMW X5. The GLE's optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 and was suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power liftgate. Additional options included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid featured an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims offered a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a panoramic display. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with touch controls and analog knobs for audio and climate adjustments. Hybrid models came with multiple USB-C ports, wireless phone charging, and an upgraded Harman Kardon audio system.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE boasted a pair of 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and infotainment system. The system was feature-rich, with a learning curve, but offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The GLE also featured a head-up display and augmented reality navigation, though the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be overly sensitive.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid came with standard safety features like forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system. However, crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of testing.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a comprehensive lineup of standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. The optional Driver Assistance package added active blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise control, and evasive steering assist. These features were unobtrusive during everyday driving and provided an extra layer of safety.
