2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in the United States. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign.

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The hybrid model is part of an effort to create more space between the Sportage and the smaller Kia Seltos, which also brought increased interior space, more tech, and radical exterior styling.

The Sportage Hybrid arrives at dealerships later this year in base LX, midlevel EX, and range-topping SX-Prestige trim levels (we drove SX-Prestige for this review). Note that this isn’t the same lineup as the non-hybrid Sportage, which gets SX, X-Line, and rugged X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trim levels as well.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid, built on the N3 platform, showcased a significant size increase over its predecessor, offering more rear-seat legroom due to its longer wheelbase. The model was taller and wider, enhancing its road presence. Its bold styling, featuring angular LED headlights and distinctive "boomerang" LED daytime running lights, set it apart from other vehicles. The interior was designed around a large optional infotainment display, with a minimalist and elegant look. However, the SynTex artificial leather upholstery felt somewhat cheap, despite Kia's promotion of it as an "animal-free" alternative.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its massive spindle grille and 8.1 inches of ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability and exclusive paint options. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's interior was marred by an abundance of plastic materials, reflecting its low sales volume and the need for cost-effective manufacturing. However, it offered luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery. The GX's design leaned sleeker compared to Toyota's blocky designs, making it easier to maneuver in technical driving situations.

Performance

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid was powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor, producing a combined 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It offered both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options, with the latter standard on higher trims. The powertrain delivered smooth and predictable acceleration, with seamless transitions between electric and gasoline power. The Sportage Hybrid's ride was comfortable, aided by a well-tuned transmission and quiet cabin. However, its steering felt nonlinear, particularly in Sport mode, and its towing capacity was limited to 2,000 pounds.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine, generating 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 provided a satisfying driving experience with its linear power delivery. The GX's towing capacity of 6,500 pounds was impressive, but its fuel economy was less so, with EPA estimates of 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. The GX's weight contributed to its predictable handling, and its brakes were strong and reliable. The Torsen limited-slip differential and 4WD system enhanced its off-road capabilities.

Form and function

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid offered competitive interior space, with slightly less headroom and cargo space than its non-hybrid counterpart. It provided more front-seat headroom than some rivals but less for second-row passengers. The dual-level cargo floor added flexibility, with 39.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 73.7 cubic feet with them folded. The Sportage Hybrid's interior featured clever storage solutions, including a rotary shift knob and adjustable cupholders, enhancing its practicality.

The 2023 Lexus GX retained ample cubby space, with a deep center console bin and convenient cupholders. However, it lacked modern USB-C ports, relying on older USB-A ports. The GX's physical controls were a welcome feature, offering ease of use compared to haptic-touch interfaces. The second row was comfortable, but the third row was cramped and best suited for occasional use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with only 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

Technology

2023 Lexus GX

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. Higher trims offered a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a panoramic display combining the infotainment screen with a digital instrument cluster. The panoramic display was visually impressive and user-friendly, though Android Auto didn't utilize the entire screen. The Sportage Hybrid also included touch controls and analog knobs for audio and climate adjustments, along with multiple USB-C ports and optional wireless charging.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen was an improvement, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. However, the graphics and responsiveness lagged behind competitors. The GX included a CD player, reflecting its outdated tech offerings. Despite this, the GX excelled in off-road capabilities, with a robust 4WD system, downhill assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The Off-Road Package further enhanced its ruggedness with features like a multi-terrain monitor and crawl control.

Safety

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid's crash-test ratings were unavailable at the time of testing. However, it offered a range of safety features, including forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system. The SX-Prestige trim level provided advanced driver-assist tech, setting it apart from competitors.

The 2023 Lexus GX, lacking crash-test ratings, was built on an older platform. Despite this, it included advanced driver assistance systems like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. While missing some top-end features, the GX's safety tech was commendable for a vehicle of its age.
