2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

2023 Honda Pilot

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 Honda Pilot underwent a complete redesign, presenting a more rugged and substantial appearance. Its upright grille and boxier styling not only made it look larger but also contributed to its increased dimensions, being 3.4 inches longer, up to 1.5 inches wider, and 0.8 inches taller than its predecessor. These changes complemented the all-terrain-capable TrailSport model, which gained legitimate off-road parts such as a one-inch taller ride height, unique 18-inch wheels, chunky all-terrain tires, and underbody skid plates. The interior took a more conventional styling route, remaining attractive and functional, with materials quality meeting elevated class standards. Overall, the new Pilot emphasized function over form, offering a tidy and utilitarian aesthetic.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS exuded a soft sensuality in its design, which, while bordering on boring, aged well. The GLS 450 test vehicle featured stunning 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille design, polished metal exterior accents, and a Twilight Blue paint color. Inside, the GLS 450 showcased a Bahia Brown over Black interior color scheme with natural-grain Grey Oak, contrast stitching, and polished aluminum accents. The GLS 450, the most affordable version, was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology. The test vehicle included the AMG Line and Exclusive Trim Packages, an Acoustic Comfort Package, and other luxurious features, bringing the MSRP to $97,730.

Performance

2023 Honda Pilot

8/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

The 2023 Honda Pilot was equipped with an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available on all models and standard on the Elite and TrailSport trims. The Pilot offered quick initial acceleration with a pleasant engine hum, though power was adequate rather than impressive. The brake pedal was soft, suitable for a family SUV, and the Pilot cornered well for a three-row SUV, prioritizing comfort over sporty driving. The TrailSport model increased ground clearance by an inch and featured all-terrain tires, adding a subtle vibration on pavement but enhancing off-road capability without sacrificing on-road composure.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with its 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, provided smooth and seamless acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The mild-hybrid system added an instant 148 lb-ft of torque, making the GLS 450 lively from a stop. A nine-speed automatic transmission and variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system offered Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual driving modes. The GLS 450 had a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg combined. The driving experience was sublime, with the adaptive air suspension allowing the SUV to handle twisty roads with ease, though some oscillations were noted on uneven surfaces. The brakes performed admirably, and the Off-Road menu within MBUX provided a transparent view of the terrain.

Form and function

2023 Honda Pilot

10/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2023 Honda Pilot's interior was more conventional compared to other new Honda vehicles, offering a handy dash shelf for the front passenger. The entry-level LX and Sport trims featured a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, while higher trims upgraded to a nine-inch display. The Elite trim's touchscreen seemed small for the space but was adequate. Primary controls were logically placed, with a large rubberized shelf for phones and a wireless charging pad. Clever storage features included a stowable second-row center seat, providing a center pass-through for third-row passengers. The second row offered ample space for adults, while the third row was less inviting but suitable for short trips. Cargo capacity was generous, with up to 114.3 cubic feet available.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, with the AMG Line package, featured sportier styling that could be inconvenient when entering or exiting the SUV. The front seats were comfortable, with supple leather surfaces, heating, ventilation, and massage programs. The new steering wheel was delightful to grip, though touch-sensing controls could be irritating. The Exclusive Trim Package added heated rear seats and a four-zone automatic climate control system. The no-charge optional captain’s chairs offered excellent thigh support, and the GLS featured expansive second-row legroom and a panoramic sunroof. Accessing the third-row seat was a hassle, and space was snug for adults, though kids would be happier. Cargo space was practical, with a maximum of 84.7 cubic feet available.

Technology

2023 Honda Pilot

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 Honda Pilot, particularly in the EX-L trim and above, offered a larger infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and USB ports in every row. Higher trims included a multi-view camera system, with the Elite trim adding a head-up display and a fully digital instrument panel. The infotainment system was functional, with quick responses and a logical layout. Features included Honda's CabinTalk, a navigation system, Bose premium audio, remote monitoring, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The TrailSport and Elite trims also featured the multi-view TrailWatch camera system for off-roading.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS was equipped with the latest MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system offered improved graphics and various instrumentation themes and modes. While MBUX was fast and easy to use, touch-sensitive areas on the steering wheel and center console could cause confusion and distraction. Despite this, MBUX was a sensational technology, with intuitive touchscreen operation, outstanding natural voice recognition, and impressive augmented reality for navigation.

Safety

2023 Honda Pilot

8/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

10/10

The 2023 Honda Pilot had not yet been rated by the NHTSA, but Honda expected top scores. It received a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Standard Honda Sensing safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, traffic-jam assist, a blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Higher trims added low-speed automatic braking and parking sensors, with the TrailSport and Elite featuring surround-view and multi-view camera systems. The advanced safety features functioned well, with adaptive cruise control maintaining smooth inputs.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS came standard with over 20 significant safety features. The advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) could be adjusted through MBUX, allowing customization of alerts and sensitivity. The forward-collision warning system was effective, and the lane-departure warning system provided a distinctive haptic thudding. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist systems handled various driving conditions smoothly, with only one instance of the lane-centering assist turning off. Overall, the GLS’s ADAS was outstanding, providing subtle and smooth operation without causing driver aggravation.
