2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Honda CR-V has been on sale in the US since the 1997 model year, and it first got a hybrid version in 2020. The hybrid powertrain was available in four trims, exclusively with all-wheel drive (AWD). Its gas-powered counterpart, meanwhile, was cheaper by three to four thousand dollars at each trim level, had even less-expensive front-wheel-drive (FWD) options, and came in six trims.

Fast forward to 2023. Honda has simplified the CR-V lineup significantly. There are now only four trims total, two per powertrain. The CR-V Hybrid is available in either Sport or Sport Touring trim, positioning it clearly as the best Honda CR-V in production today.

2024 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The Toyota Sequoia gained a standard hybrid powertrain when it entered its third generation, just last year. While the tech updates were widely celebrated and the facelift considered unobjectionable even by its harshest critics, the move to hybrid power proved to be something of a mixed bag. Increased towing and hauling power bolstered the obvious advantage of improved fuel economy, but impact was somewhat dampened by the reduction in cargo and third-row space to accommodate the new battery.

Verdict: The Sequoia may not be the most capable full-size SUV in the segment, and it’s certainly not the most spacious. It is, however, the only hybrid in its class, and it offers a blend of seating capacity, towing power, and fuel efficiency you won’t find elsewhere-at least, not if you don’t want to go diesel.

Look and feel

2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid

9/10

2024 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid marked a bold departure from its predecessors with its assertive and truck-like design. It was longer and wider, giving it a more muscular stance. The classic D-pillar taillights were modernized with three L shapes, enhancing its aggressive look. The Sport Touring trim, driven in Canyon River Blue, featured special Sport styling with black roof rails, mirrors, and 19-inch wheels. Inside, the CR-V Hybrid followed the design direction of the 2022 Civic and 2023 HR-V, with a premium feel and high-quality materials, including contrast stitching on the seats and steering wheel.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia shared its platform and design cues with the Tundra pickup, featuring hexagonal grilles, strong fender creases, and a muscular stance. The exterior color significantly influenced its appearance, with the Capstone model in Celestial Silver appearing somewhat dated. Inside, the Sequoia resembled the Tundra with a blocky, geometric dash layout and physical controls for climate and volume. The Capstone trim boasted semi-aniline leather upholstery, while other trims offered various seating materials. The Sequoia's interior was spacious, with power-adjustable front seats and a power-tilt and -slide moonroof standard across the lineup.

2024 Toyota Sequoia

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid offered a simplified powertrain lineup, with a choice between turbocharged and hybrid options. The hybrid powertrain combined a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a two-motor hybrid-electric system, producing 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This made it the most powerful CR-V to date, with a top speed of 115 mph. The CR-V Hybrid introduced a fourth drive mode, Snow, alongside Sport, Normal, and Econ, enhancing its versatility. The Real Time AWD system could send up to 50% of engine torque to the rear wheels, and a new "B" shifter position allowed for increased regenerative braking. The CR-V Hybrid's fuel efficiency was impressive, with the Sport trim achieving 43 mpg city, 36 highway, and 40 combined.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia was exclusively offered in hybrid format, featuring the iForce MAX hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbo V6 engine and an electric motor. It delivered 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, significantly more than its V8 predecessor. The Sequoia's fuel economy improved to 20 mpg combined with 4WD. The TRD Pro trim was off-road-oriented, with 4WD, a skid plate, and off-road suspension. The Sequoia's towing capacity increased to 9,520 pounds, with towing-related upgrades available. The 10-speed automatic transmission operated smoothly, and the Sequoia's on-road handling was adequate for its class.

Form and function

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid's larger exterior translated to increased interior volume, with 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 76.5 cubic feet with them folded. The Sport Touring model featured a hands-free power tailgate, and all CR-Vs had wide-opening rear doors for easy access. Rear seat legroom increased to 41 inches, accommodating taller passengers comfortably. The interior boasted eight cupholders and a cubby designed to hold two smartphones side by side.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia offered a maximum of 86.9 cubic feet of cargo space with both second- and third-row seats folded. The second-row seats were easy to move for access to the back row, and the third-row seats folded at the push of a button. However, the load floor was not flat due to the hybrid powertrain's battery pack. Headroom and legroom measurements varied across rows, with the Sequoia falling behind some rivals in legroom. Second-row captain's chairs were available on higher trims, providing wide but flat seating.

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid featured a standard 7-inch touchscreen display with physical volume and tuning knobs, while the Sport Touring trim had a 9-inch touchscreen with a volume knob. Both Hybrid models included USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats. The Sport Touring trim added driver’s seat memory, a heated steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Bose Premium audio system. Honda's smart navigation system optimized fuel efficiency based on the route.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia's Capstone trim came with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, accessed through an 8-inch touchscreen on the SR5 trim and a 14-inch touchscreen on others. The Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system prioritized functionality over flashiness. The Sequoia featured a full-color 12.3-inch driver-information display and a Panoramic View monitor as standard. A 10-inch color head-up display was available on higher trims, and the 14-speaker JBL Premium Audio system was standard on Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone trims.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia featured the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 2.5 suite of safety and driver-assistance features as standard, including a pre-collision system, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. Front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring with Trailer Merge Warning were also standard. The Tow Technology Package added a digital rearview mirror and trailer backup guide. The Sequoia had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA, but the similar Tundra earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation.
