2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

Look and feel

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 showcased a sophisticated exterior with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, presenting a stately midsize SUV profile at over 16 feet long. Standard 19-inch wheels were upgraded to 22-inch alloys on the Prestige trim, enhancing its elegant appearance. The rear echoed the quad lamp design with four-part taillamps above dual exhausts. Despite a boxy hands-free liftgate, the matte Brunswick Green paint added a touch of elegance. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the metal and matte wood trim. The dash featured thin horizontal air vents, and the center console was highlighted by three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. The two-spoke steering wheel added a unique touch, though the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed awkwardly placed atop the dash. Overall, the interior was spacious and luxurious.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS exuded a soft sensuality in its design, with the GLS 450 model featuring 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille, and polished metal accents, all enhanced by Twilight Blue paint. Inside, the Bahia Brown over Black interior with natural-grain Grey Oak trim and polished aluminum accents created a luxurious atmosphere. The GLS 450, the most affordable version, offered a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology. The test vehicle included AMG Line and Exclusive Trim Packages, Acoustic Comfort Package, leather upholstery, and wood trim, bringing the MSRP to $97,730. The second-row captain’s chairs were a no-charge option, adding to the comfort and luxury of the interior.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered all-wheel drive with a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, or a turbo 3.5-liter V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The latter, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, was in the test vehicle. Despite its power, the GV80 was not particularly quick, taking about 5.5 seconds to reach 60 mph. It excelled in highway driving, with smooth power delivery and shifts, and an electronically controlled suspension that adjusted to road conditions. Active noise cancellation added to the serene driving experience.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with its 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, provided smooth and swift acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The mild-hybrid system added an instant 148 lb-ft of torque, enhancing its lively feel. A nine-speed automatic transmission and variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system offered multiple driving modes. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg combined. The adaptive air suspension and large tires contributed to its athleticism, while the brakes performed admirably. The Off-Road menu in MBUX provided additional capabilities for adventurous driving.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with luxury features. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were standard, with ventilated front and rear seats in the test model. The Ergo Motion driver’s seat offered fatigue-reducing adjustments. Nappa leather seats added to the comfort. A third row was optional but cramped. The proximity key and digital key provided convenience, while the tri-zone climate control and 21-speaker stereo system enhanced comfort. Cargo space was generous, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 84 cubic feet with seats folded. Towing capacity was 6,000 pounds.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, with the AMG Line package, featured sportier styling but had side sill trim that could be inconvenient. The front seats offered comfort with leather surfaces, heating, ventilation, and massage programs. The new steering wheel had touch-sensing controls that could be irritating. The Exclusive Trim Package added heated rear seats and a four-zone climate control system. The second-row captain’s chairs provided comfort, though access to the third row was cumbersome. Cargo space was practical, with 17.4 cubic feet behind the third row, 42.7 cubic feet behind the second, and 84.7 cubic feet maximum.

Technology

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. The infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, and the dial control was cumbersome. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available but not wireless. The vehicle included wireless charging, USB ports, and a 110-volt outlet. Remote smart parking assist allowed the car to maneuver in and out of parking spaces autonomously.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with the latest MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The system was user-friendly, though touch-sensitive areas on the steering wheel and center console could cause accidental changes. MBUX offered intuitive touchscreen operation, natural voice recognition, and augmented reality for navigation, making it a standout technology.

Safety

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

10/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with numerous standard safety features, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. A unique feature was the video feed of the blind spot in the digital gauge cluster. Highway Drive Assist provided hands-on/eyes-up driving aid. The GV80 received a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and high ratings from IIHS, though headlights and LATCH system were rated Acceptable.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered over 20 significant safety features, adjustable through MBUX. The ADAS systems were praised for their subtle and smooth operation. The GLS handled various driving conditions with ease, though there was a single instance of lane-centering assist turning off. Overall, the safety technology was outstanding.
