2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2023 Volvo XC60 Reviews Summary

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are smart for certain consumers. They allow people to give electric vehicle ownership a try before diving into the deep end of the pool by acclimating people to nightly plug-ins and the benefits of electric-only driving.

At the same time, they eliminate a phenomenon called “range anxiety,” which is the mild panic EV drivers may feel when their battery gets low. That’s because they also have a gasoline engine, and that means you can take a cross-country trip in one without ever needing to find a charging station.

Talk about a win-win situation. And among luxury PHEVs, the 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge is an appealing choice. But it certainly does not come cheap.

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 presented a sophisticated and graceful exterior with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, embodying a stately presence at over 16 feet long. Standard 19-inch wheels were available, but the Prestige trim featured 22-inch alloy wheels, enhancing its grandeur. The rear design mirrored the front with four-part taillamps above dual exhausts, and the hands-free liftgate maintained a boxy shape, contributing to its elegant appearance, especially in the matte Brunswick Green paint. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the metal and matte wood trim, while the center console featured three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. The two-spoke steering wheel added a unique touch, although the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed awkwardly placed atop the dash. Despite this minor flaw, the interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a pleasant environment.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC60 showcased a blend of style and design that aged gracefully. The Recharge model with the Ultimate package and Dark exterior theme featured Thunder Grey paint, a Climate Package, air suspension, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, bringing the MSRP to $74,690. Sitting on 20-inch wheels, the XC60 Recharge exuded a stylish appeal. Inside, classic Scandinavian minimalism prevailed, with black leather seats, wood trim, metal accents, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof creating an opulent atmosphere. The Orrefors crystal gear selector knob added a touch of luxury. While the interior required some acclimation, it ultimately provided a comfortable and elegant space, with Volvo's attention to detail evident throughout.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

2023 Volvo XC60

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered all-wheel drive with a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, or a turbo 3.5-liter V6 delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Despite its power, the GV80 was not particularly athletic or nimble, taking about five and a half seconds to reach 60 mph, slower than some competitors. However, it excelled in highway driving, with smooth power delivery and shifts, and an electronically controlled suspension that adjusted for road conditions, providing a quiet and comfortable ride.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge combined a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor, producing a total of 455 horsepower and 423 pound-feet of torque. It offered an estimated 35 miles of electric driving range and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The XC60 featured several driving modes, including Hybrid, Power, Pure, Off-road, and Constant AWD, allowing for a customizable driving experience. In Pure mode, the XC60 achieved 38.3 miles of electric driving before switching to hybrid operation. The Power mode enhanced responsiveness and handling, making it a fun drive. The XC60 Recharge averaged 54.6 mpg over a 65-mile evaluation route, showcasing its efficiency and performance.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2023 Volvo XC60

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with luxury features and spaciousness. Standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were complemented by ventilated front and rear seats, adjustable in multiple ways. The Ergo Motion driver's seat offered fatigue-reducing features, while Nappa leather upholstery added a touch of luxury. A third-row option was available, though legroom was limited. The GV80 boasted a tri-zone climate control system, a 21-speaker stereo system, a suede headliner, and a panoramic glass roof. With 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, expandable to 84 cubic feet, and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, the GV80 offered ample utility.

The 2023 Volvo XC60, a compact crossover SUV, was best suited for four passengers, though it could accommodate five. The front seats, wrapped in Nappa leather, provided exceptional comfort with heating, ventilation, and power cushion extensions. The rear seats, while comfortable, offered limited legroom. The panoramic sunroof added a sense of spaciousness. Storage options included practical spots in the center console and door panel bins. The XC60 featured a power liftgate, revealing 25.8 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 63.3 cubic feet. The air suspension allowed for easier loading, and a ski pass-through panel added versatility.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, accompanied by a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster and a head-up display. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the dial offered a tactile experience, though navigating the menu structure required a learning curve. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, albeit not wirelessly. The GV80 included wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and a 110-volt outlet. The remote smart parking assist allowed for maneuvering in tight spaces without the driver in the car, adding a unique technological touch.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 came with a 12-inch digital instrumentation panel, operated via steering wheel controls. The 9-inch Google Built-in infotainment system offered access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play, supporting both Android and Apple CarPlay. The portrait-style touchscreen provided excellent graphics and an intuitive interface, complemented by physical controls for volume and tuning. The voice-recognition system impressed with its accuracy, though it occasionally required specific phrasing. The optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivered exceptional audio quality, enhancing the overall experience.

Safety

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver aids, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. A standout feature was the video feed of the car's blind spot displayed in the digital gauge cluster. Highway Drive Assist utilized various systems to provide a hands-on/eyes-up driving aid, though it struggled in certain lighting conditions. The GV80 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Good rating for crashworthiness from the IIHS, with Superior front crash prevention ratings.

The 2023 Volvo XC60, synonymous with safety, featured Pilot Assist, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability. It excelled on highways, maintaining smooth and accurate performance. Oncoming Lane Mitigation helped avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles. While the NHTSA had not assessed the XC60 Recharge, the B5 and B6 mild-hybrids received top marks. The IIHS awarded the XC60 B5 and B6 a Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2022, with the potential for the same rating in 2023.
