2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2024 Hyundai Venue Reviews Summary

A small multi-purpose vehicle that Hyundai sells as a crossover SUV, the 2024 Venue has a base price of $21,275, including the destination charge. Three versions are available, each equipped with a 121-horsepower four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It holds four adults (five if you squeeze) and can carry up to 31.9 cubic feet of cargo. Affordable to buy and own, the 2024 Hyundai Venue is a budget-friendly choice.

Look and feel

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

2024 Hyundai Venue

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that drew inspiration from the G70 compact luxury sedan, particularly noticeable above the belt-line. Its split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that curved from behind the rear window connected it visually to its sedan counterpart. This chrome bar cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV design without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70 impressed with its luxurious cabin, featuring top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish. The interior design was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash included a full touchscreen, a rotary dial, and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience.

In contrast, the 2024 Hyundai Venue, available in SE, SEL, and Limited trims, presented a more affordable yet stylish option. The Limited trim, with its Ecotronic Gray paint, gave the Venue a mature appearance. Despite its affordability, the Venue's design was appealing, with unexpected style elements like seat stripes and white trim around the dashboard air vents. The interior featured hard plastics but managed to avoid looking cheap. The Venue's digital instrumentation and 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display were well-executed, offering a high-quality feel for a small SUV.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

2024 Hyundai Venue

5/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gas-powered trims: the 2.5T with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and the 3.5T with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70 provided a refined driving experience, balancing comfort and sharp handling. The Electrified GV70 used a 77.4-kWh battery, powering two electric motors for a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. It offered 236 miles of range and fast charging capabilities.

The 2024 Hyundai Venue, equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine generating 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque, was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Weighing 2,612 pounds, the Venue was agile in city and suburban settings, though its suspension struggled on rough roads. The Venue lacked all-wheel drive, with power directed to the front wheels. It offered 31 mpg in combined driving, though our tests showed slightly lower efficiency. The Venue's performance was adequate for its size, but it was best suited for smooth, well-maintained roads.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

2024 Hyundai Venue

6/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with them in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and ample storage options in the front. While front-seat comfort was commendable, rear-seat legroom was tighter, requiring adjustments for comfort. The rear bench reclined, enhancing passenger comfort.

The 2024 Hyundai Venue offered increased ground clearance, making entry and exit easier. Front seats featured manual height adjustment and heated cushions, while the back seat was better suited for two passengers. Storage space was limited, and the Venue lacked rear air conditioning vents and privacy glass. Cargo capacity was 18.7 cubic feet, expanding to 31.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Technology

2023 Genesis GV70

2024 Hyundai Venue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It included four USB ports, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo. The system was user-friendly, though the proximity of the rotary dial to the shifter could cause confusion.

The 2024 Hyundai Venue featured an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Limited trim added navigation, SiriusXM, and a wireless charger. However, it required wired connections for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reducing the wireless charger's utility. Despite this, the Venue's infotainment system was sophisticated, with impressive voice recognition.

The SEL trim added blind-spot monitoring, while the Limited trim included cyclist detection. The Venue received Good ratings in crash tests from the IIHS and a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
