2023 Cadillac Escalade Reviews Summary

The ultimate shuttle is a new Cadillac Escalade, preferably in black with the shiniest chrome wheels. Many SUVs are more luxurious and some even quadruple the Escalade’s $80,000 starting price, yet none have the physical presence or the street cred that comes with a Cadillac truck. European brands do not make full-size luxury SUVs like this. They come close, but for sheer interior space and towing capacity, American brands dominate the segment. The Escalade was redesigned for the 2021 model year and carries over to 2023 mostly unchanged. That means it still boasts the industry’s best hands-free driving system, the sharpest screens, and the most stereo speakers.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year–and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$50k Mercedes-Benz.

2023 Cadillac Escalade

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Cadillac Escalade stood as a towering presence, nearly six-and-a-half feet above the ground, and required a substantial 18 to 19 feet of length to park. It was a motorized cargo container, equipped with three rows of leather seats and an array of computers, reminiscent of a command center. The Escalade ESV extended this grandeur by an additional 15 inches, primarily stretching the wheelbase. This SUV was designed for show, appealing to pop musicians, overzealous parents, wannabe federal agents, or boaters with large families. Its athletic and trim appearance was achieved through clever design elements like thin LED lights and darkened chrome bits, which masked its mass. The interior boasted a rich first-row experience with a 38-inch curved screen and luxurious wood trim, though the allure faded in the second and third rows, where parts from cheaper GM vehicles were evident.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC maintained a more restrained design approach, with subtle updates like new taillights and repositioned door handles. The headlights were narrower and more menacing, while the taillights were connected by a trim piece across the back. The GLC Coupe retained its steeply sloping profile, giving it a fastback roof. The interior was sumptuous, with two-tone leather upholstery and a wood-and-metal dash treatment. The GLC was heavy on gadgetry, featuring an array of screens, buttons, and ambient lighting. Despite its relatively low price point, the GLC offered a class-leading interior for those who appreciated a tech-heavy environment.

Performance

2023 Cadillac Escalade

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac Escalade offered a standard 6.2-liter gasoline V8 engine, producing 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. While it provided a pleasant driving experience, the engine's performance did not match its muscle-car sound. The Escalade's 10-speed automatic transmission was responsive, but the powertrain felt heavy in passing situations. The Escalade-V variant addressed acceleration issues with a supercharged Corvette V8, delivering 682 hp and 653 lb-ft of torque. The optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 offered better fuel economy and smooth torque delivery. The Escalade's magnetic dampers and air suspension enhanced maneuverability, though wind noise was noticeable at highway speeds.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 416 horsepower, surpassing the previous generation's V6. The GLC 300 base model offered 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The GLC 43's AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed transmission provided faster shifts, though it resulted in rougher shifts. The performance suspension offered improved handling but a firmer ride. The GLC's standard four-wheel steering contributed to its sporty nature, appealing to enthusiasts seeking a dynamic driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Cadillac Escalade

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac Escalade boasted an exceptionally spacious interior, with 25 cubic feet behind the third row, 73 cubic feet behind the second row, and 121 cubic feet with both rows down. The Escalade ESV offered even more space, with 143 cubic feet in total. The independent rear suspension allowed for generous headroom and legroom in every row. The controls were user-friendly, with a smart and fast infotainment system. Optional features included a front console refrigerator and power-retractable side steps for easy access.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cabin was driver-focused, with controls angled toward the driver. The GLC SUV offered 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The GLC Coupe provided 17.6 cubic feet of cargo volume, expanding to 52.6 cubic feet. The standard power-folding rear seats and flat-folding capability added convenience. The GLC's interior was well-appointed, with standard heated front seats and optional ventilation and heated rear seats.

Technology

The 2023 Cadillac Escalade featured a span of OLED screens across the dash, providing sharp and clear visuals. The front camera displayed a high-res feed of the road, with directional arrows and street names overlaid. Super Cruise, a $2,500 option, offered hands-free highway driving with infrared eye-tracking cameras. The Escalade also included night vision with pedestrian detection and a 36-speaker AKG audio system. The front seats offered massage functions, and the rear-seat entertainment system could stream apps like Hulu.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cockpit centered around an 11.9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, running the third-generation MBUX infotainment system. The system included a responsive voice command feature, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Exclusive trim added navigation, a 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system, and an off-road dash display. The Pinnacle trim included a head-up display and augmented reality navigation. Standalone tech options included an Advanced USB package.

Standard safety features included forward automatic emergency braking, a Safety Alert seat, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included reverse emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and Super Cruise.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC received a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, with an "Acceptable" rating for the standard front crash-prevention system. Standard safety features included active brake assist, attention assist, and Pre-Safe. The optional Driver Assistance Package added adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, and active lane-keeping assist.
