2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

2023 BMW X7

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 BMW X7 underwent a significant mid-cycle refresh, adopting a bold new front-end design reminiscent of the BMW 7 Series sedan. The LED accent lights were repositioned, and the actual headlights were tucked beneath, creating a controversial look due to the oversized kidney grille. While the facelift aimed for a striking presence, it sacrificed some grace and cohesiveness. The interior saw updates with a curved glass housing for the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen, alongside a more elemental dashboard design. The quality of materials remained high, with options for leather upholstery and a new Sensafin synthetic substitute.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS exuded a softer, more timeless design. The GLS 450 test vehicle featured 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille, and Twilight Blue paint, offering a counter-cultural aesthetic to the blacked-out trend. Inside, the GLS showcased a Bahia Brown over Black interior with natural-grain Grey Oak, polished aluminum accents, and the luxurious detailing Mercedes is known for. The GLS provided a comfortable and inviting space, with massaging front seats and a four-zone climate control system ensuring passenger comfort.

The 2023 BMW X7 offered a base xDrive40i model with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This setup allowed the X7 to reach 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The M60i model upgraded to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, achieving 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Despite its nearly 6,000-pound weight, the X7 handled well, with controlled body roll and a firm ride that balanced performance and comfort.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, generating 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, aided by a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The GLS offered Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual driving modes, with a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a fuel economy of 21 mpg combined. The adaptive air suspension and large tires contributed to its athleticism, while the brakes provided smooth stops.

Form and function

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2023 BMW X7 provided ample space, with second-row seats accommodating taller passengers and a large sunroof enhancing the airy feel. The third row, accessible via power-operated middle seats, offered adequate space for average-sized adults. Cargo capacity ranged from 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row to 90.4 cubic feet with all seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable suspension made loading easier.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, with the AMG Line package, featured sportier styling but posed challenges when entering or exiting. The front seats offered comfort with leather surfaces, heating, ventilation, and massage programs. The second row provided expansive legroom and a panoramic sunroof, while the third row was snug for adults. Cargo space was practical, with 17.4 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 84.7 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2023 BMW X7's iDrive infotainment system, though historically praised, took a step back with fewer physical buttons and more reliance on the touchscreen. Voice commands offered some relief, but the system's complexity detracted from user experience.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the latest MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch displays. While the system was generally intuitive, touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel and center console caused occasional frustration. Despite this, MBUX excelled with its natural voice recognition and augmented reality navigation.

Safety

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

10/10

The 2023 BMW X7 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. The M60i trim added a surround-view camera and optional advanced driver assistance systems. The highway driving assist feature was particularly effective in reducing driver fatigue.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS boasted over 20 significant safety features, adjustable through MBUX. The advanced driving assistance systems performed smoothly, with adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist handling various driving conditions effectively. The GLS's safety technology was praised for its subtlety and reliability.
