2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2023 BMW X7

6/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 BMW X7 underwent a significant mid-cycle refresh, adopting a more assertive front-end design reminiscent of the BMW 7 Series sedan. The SUV featured LED accent lights positioned where the previous model's headlights were, with the actual headlights now discreetly placed underneath. This bold design choice, coupled with the oversized kidney grille, sparked mixed reactions. While the new styling aimed to enhance the X7's presence, it arguably compromised its grace and cohesiveness. The interior saw a modern update with a curved glass housing for the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen, alongside a more streamlined dashboard design. The quality of materials remained high, with options for leather upholstery and a new synthetic substitute, though some interior trim choices were criticized for causing glare.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 offered a luxurious and stylish experience, particularly in the Prestige Signature trim. The exterior, available in exclusive colors like Mauna Red, featured dark chrome trim and 22-inch wheels. Inside, the GV80 exuded opulence with diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and metallic accents. The interior was equipped with advanced features such as ambient lighting, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a wide touchscreen display. Despite its lavish interior, the GV80's Prestige Signature trim was limited to four seats, which could be a drawback for those needing more passenger capacity. Overall, the GV80's design and materials underscored its status as a luxury vehicle, though some might prefer the regular Prestige trim for its practicality.

The 2023 BMW X7 offered two engine options, starting with the base xDrive40i model featuring a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This setup delivered 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, a notable increase from the previous model. The X7 M60i model upgraded to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. Despite its nearly 6,000-pound weight, the X7 managed to deliver impressive acceleration and handling, though it wasn't particularly sporty. The ride was slightly firmer compared to other luxury SUVs, reflecting BMW's focus on driver engagement.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine choices: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. The latter provided a more satisfying performance but was less fuel-efficient, with observed fuel economy of 17.2 mpg. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV80 featured five driving modes and could tow up to 6,000 pounds. The 3.5T model included upgraded brakes and an adaptive damping suspension, delivering a rewarding driving experience with swift acceleration and commendable grip. The steering was unremarkable but didn't detract from the overall driving experience.

Form and function

2024 Genesis GV80

The 2023 BMW X7 excelled in providing ample space for passengers and cargo. The second-row seats comfortably accommodated taller passengers, and the large sunroof and windows enhanced the sense of space. Accessing the third row required some patience due to the power-operated middle row, but once there, it offered adequate head- and legroom for average-sized adults. Cargo space was generous, with 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 48.6 cubic feet with the third row stowed, and a maximum of 90.4 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable suspension made loading and unloading easier.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80's seating configuration varied by trim level. The 3.5T Advanced model offered a third-row seat, while the Prestige Signature trim was limited to four seats with luxurious captain's chairs. The interior featured high-quality materials and advanced comfort features, but the seats were criticized for being uncomfortable on long trips. Cargo space measured 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Prestige Signature's rear center console could hinder loading larger items.

The 2023 BMW X7 featured the latest iDrive infotainment system, which received mixed reviews. While basic functions were easy to use, many physical buttons were replaced by touchscreen controls, complicating tasks like adjusting seat settings and cruise control. Voice commands offered a workaround but were not always efficient. The system's complexity detracted from its overall usability, and more intuitive menus and physical buttons were desired.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel in higher trims. The infotainment system included navigation, satellite radio, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Wi-Fi hotspot was introduced for 2024, and wireless smartphone charging was standard. The user interface was intuitive, and the voice-recognition system was effective. The GV80 also featured a digital key system and a premium sound system, with a head-up display in higher trims.

Safety

The 2023 BMW X7 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and adaptive headlights. The M60i trim added a surround-view camera system, with options for adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. The highway driving assist feature was particularly appreciated for reducing driver fatigue on long trips. Crash test ratings were not available, but BMW's reputation and safety features provided reassurance.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered an array of advanced safety features, including a Blind-Spot View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist. The latter worked well in light traffic but was less effective in heavy traffic. The Blind-Spot View Monitor provided a video feed of blind spots, enhancing safety during lane changes. The GV80 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, further bolstering its safety credentials.
