2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

Look and feel

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was noted for its sharp, angular style, which, while unique, did not make it stand out significantly from its competitors. The front featured the signature Acura grille, which, despite its evolution over the years, seemed to be showing its age. The sleek wraparound headlights and deep creases in the bodywork gave the RDX a sporty and aggressive look. The side profile was marked by a distinctive character line that suggested forward movement, even when stationary. However, the rear design was more conventional, resembling many other small SUVs. Inside, the RDX opted for a vertical cockpit layout, with a center stack of controls flowing into the center console, emphasizing performance. The interior, while not as modern as some rivals, offered a familiar feel for those averse to the latest glass cockpit designs.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, on the other hand, exuded a soft sensuality in its design, which, while bordering on boring, aged well. The GLS 450 test vehicle featured stunning 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille design, and polished metal exterior accents, all complemented by a lustrous Twilight Blue paint color. Inside, the GLS 450 showcased a new Bahia Brown over Black interior color scheme, with natural-grain Grey Oak and polished aluminum accents. The interior was luxurious, with supple leather surfaces, heating and ventilation, massage programs, and a wide range of adjustments for the front seats. The GLS offered expansive second-row legroom and a standard panoramic sunroof, though accessing the third-row seat was cumbersome. The interior storage was decent, and the cargo space was practical, with a maximum of 84.7 cubic feet behind the front seats.

Performance

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and came standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel-drive available on all models. The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, offering immediate throttle response and a pleasing engine and exhaust sound. The transmission was adept at selecting the correct gear, and the brake pedal provided reassuring firmness. The RDX's handling inspired confidence, with well-managed body roll and abundant traction from the advanced AWD system. It cornered with enough prowess to be considered sporty, while maintaining ride comfort.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, delivering 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, with the mild-hybrid system providing an instant 148 lb-ft of torque for lively acceleration. A nine-speed automatic transmission fed power to all four wheels through a variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The GLS offered Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual driving modes, with a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg in combined driving. The GLS 450 provided a sublime driving experience, with quiet, quick, and perfectly calibrated performance. The adaptive air suspension allowed the SUV to handle twisty roads with ease, though some unusual oscillations were noted on certain road surfaces.

Form and function

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2023 Acura RDX offered ample space in the front seats, with additional power adjustments for side bolsters and thigh extension in top trims. The rear seats accommodated average-sized adults comfortably, though taller individuals might find headroom limited. The large panoramic sunroof enhanced the cabin's open and airy feel. Cargo space was generous, with up to 31.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 79.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The RDX provided various storage options for smaller personal items, though the center stack's design took up unnecessary space.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, equipped with the AMG Line package, featured sportier styling that could be cumbersome when entering or exiting the SUV. The front seats were perfectly comfortable, with a commanding view over the hood and excellent outward visibility. The Exclusive Trim Package added heated rear seats and a four-zone automatic climate control system. The second-row offered expansive legroom, though accessing the third-row seat was challenging. The third-row space was snug for adults, but suitable for children. Interior storage was decent, with practical cargo space offering up to 84.7 cubic feet behind the front seats.

Technology

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 Acura RDX featured a touchpad infotainment controller, which, while better than Lexus' attempt, was still challenging to use, especially while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen and was out of reach. The experience improved with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, allowing for easier operation. The infotainment system itself had sharp graphics, quick responses, and logically arranged menus. Standard features included a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote monitoring via the Acuralink app, with options for premium audio.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS was equipped with the latest MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system offered improved graphics and various instrumentation themes and modes. While generally fast and easy to use, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel and center console touchpad could cause confusion and distraction. Despite this, MBUX was praised for its intuitive operation, natural voice recognition, and augmented reality navigation system.

Safety

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

10/10

The 2023 Acura RDX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The Technology package added parking sensors, while the Advance package included a surround-view camera system and a head-up display. The systems generally worked well, though the lane-keep assist was better suited to straight highways.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS came standard with over 20 significant safety features, with many adjustable through the MBUX system. The advanced driving assistance systems were praised for their smooth operation and subtle steering inputs. The forward-collision warning system was effective without being intrusive, and the lane-departure warning system provided a distinctive haptic feedback. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist systems handled various driving conditions with ease, though there was a single instance of the lane-centering assist turning off unexpectedly.
