Look and feel

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid borrowed styling cues from the Tacoma pickup, featuring a trapezoidal grille and upright fascia that gave it a rugged look. However, its side profile introduced a softer character line, reminiscent of the Toyota Supra and Sienna, which added unnecessary visual weight. The rear echoed the front's trapezoidal design, but the overall appearance felt disjointed compared to more cohesive designs like the Kia Telluride or Honda Pilot. Inside, the Highlander Hybrid's asymmetrical dash and metallic styling element added interest, while the high-mounted infotainment screen reduced driver distraction. The Bronze Edition's light grey fabric upholstery, however, seemed impractical for families due to its tendency to attract dirt.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution from Volvo's past boxy designs. Its purposeful front end and assertive grille, complemented by the iconic "Thor’s Hammer" headlights, gave it a modern flair. The XC90's dimensions remained rectilinear but far from the toaster-like shapes of the past. The test vehicle's 21-inch wheels and Platinum Gray paint added drama and depth. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with two-tone leather, metal speaker covers, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist design featured wood deco inlays, though the lack of physical controls could be frustrating.

Performance

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 243 horsepower, paired with a CVT and standard FWD. AWD was available via an electric motor for the rear axle. It reached 60 mph in just over 8 seconds, slightly slower than gasoline-only SUVs. The hybrid powertrain offered a quick but tepid initial response, with the gasoline engine providing adequate power thereafter. The CVT's uninspired drone was noticeable during heavy acceleration. The Highlander Hybrid's ride was soft yet confident, with minimal wind and road noise, making it one of the quieter midsize SUVs.

For 2023, Volvo replaced its older engines in the XC90 with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. The B5, with a turbocharger, produced 247 horsepower, while the B6, with both a supercharger and turbo, delivered 295 horsepower. These mild hybrids improved fuel efficiency slightly and offered smoother operation. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission was responsive, and its brakes inspired confidence. Despite its size, the XC90 handled corners well and maintained a quiet cabin. The XC90's simplicity in driving dynamics, with limited drive modes, appealed to those preferring straightforward operation.

Form and function

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 Highlander Hybrid offered well-cushioned front seats with ample adjustments, though the driver's door armrest was awkwardly positioned. Storage was plentiful, with various trays and bins. The second row was spacious, with sliding and reclining captain's chairs or an optional bench for eight-passenger capacity. The third row was less accommodating, suitable for children or short trips. Cargo space was 16 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 84.3 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's front seats provided a peaceful experience, but storage was limited. The second row was comfortable but adjusting seats was challenging. The standard seven-passenger bench could be replaced with captain's chairs for a fee. Accessing the third row was difficult, and space was limited. Cargo capacity was 12.5 cubic feet with all seats up, expanding to 65.5 cubic feet with seats folded, less than some competitors.

2023 Volvo XC90

The 2022 Highlander Hybrid featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch option for higher trims. The system was responsive, with logical menus and physical shortcut buttons. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Higher trims offered navigation and a JBL audio system.

The 2023 XC90's 9-inch vertical touchscreen ran on Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. Natural-language recognition enhanced user experience, and commands could be issued via Google Home devices. However, reliance on the touchscreen for key functions could be frustrating, with a lack of physical controls.

Safety

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2022 Highlander Hybrid earned a five-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. Some systems needed fine-tuning, with abrupt stops and false alarms noted.

The 2023 XC90 also received a five-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+. It featured adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Pilot Assist technology, all standard. These systems worked seamlessly, enhancing safety and driver confidence.
