2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid isn't particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Compared to the performance and refinement of the best three-row SUVs, it's middling at best. The best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing, and in this manner, its nearly unequaled.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid borrowed styling cues from Toyota's Tacoma, featuring a trapezoidal grille and upright fascia that gave it a rugged look. However, its side profile introduced a swooping character line that added unnecessary visual weight, making it appear somewhat bloated. The rear design echoed the front grille but felt disjointed compared to more cohesive competitors like the Kia Telluride. Inside, the Highlander had an unconventional yet less jarring interior with an asymmetrical dash and a high-mounted infotainment screen. The Bronze Edition's light grey fabric upholstery was a questionable choice, prone to dirt and stains, surrounded by Softex synthetic leather that felt more like vinyl.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received subtle exterior updates that were hard to notice at first glance. The front grille featured clever Mercedes star logos, and the headlights and taillights saw minor changes. The GLE 450e test vehicle stood out with its Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG wheels, adding a touch of elegance. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The cabin offered a high level of customization with multiple interior color choices and trims, making it one of the most robust-looking in its segment.

Performance

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 243 horsepower, paired with a CVT and standard FWD. AWD was available via an electric motor for the rear axle. It reached 60 mph in just over 8 seconds, slightly slower than gasoline-only SUVs. The hybrid powertrain provided a quick start, but the engine's hum became a drone under heavy acceleration. The ride was soft, with a suspension that smoothed out bumps, and the cabin remained quiet on highways.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, from turbocharged four- and six-cylinders to a 603-hp twin-turbo V8 in the AMG GLE 63 S. The GLE 450e combined a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor, producing 381 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The GLE 450e's electric mode allowed highway speeds up to 87 mph, with seamless transitions between gas and electric power. The suspension absorbed road imperfections effortlessly, and the steering made the large SUV feel maneuverable.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Highlander Hybrid's front seats were comfortable with ample adjustments, though the driver's door armrest was awkwardly positioned. Storage was plentiful, with trays and bins for personal items. The second row offered spacious seating with sliding and reclining captain's chairs, while the third row was less accommodating, suitable for children. Cargo space was 16 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 84.3 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2023 GLE provided ample space for adults in the first and second rows, with a light and airy cabin feel. It offered 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, comparable to rivals. The optional third row was limited to certain models and best suited for children. Comfort features included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power liftgate. The GLE 450e test vehicle boasted additional luxury options like massaging seats and a panoramic sunroof.

Technology

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Highlander Hybrid featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch option on higher trims. The system was responsive, with physical shortcut buttons and climate controls. Standard tech included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. Higher trims offered navigation and a JBL audio system.

The 2023 GLE's MBUX infotainment system included dual 12.3-inch screens for the instrument panel and main display. It supported touch, control pad, and steering wheel commands. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved voice command system. The head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for clarity, though the steering wheel's touch controls could be overly sensitive.

Safety

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Highlander Hybrid earned a five-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. The systems generally worked well but needed some fine-tuning.

The 2023 GLE came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. The optional Driver Assistance package added advanced features like adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist. These systems were unobtrusive and effective in everyday driving.
