2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid isn't particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Compared to the performance and refinement of the best three-row SUVs, it's middling at best. The best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing, and in this manner, its nearly unequaled.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid borrowed styling cues from Toyota's Tacoma pickup, featuring a trapezoidal grille and upright fascia that gave it a rugged look. However, the side profile introduced a softer character line, reminiscent of the Toyota Supra and Sienna, which added unnecessary visual weight. The rear echoed the front's trapezoidal theme, but the overall design felt disjointed compared to more cohesive competitors like the Kia Telluride and Honda Pilot. Inside, the Highlander Hybrid's asymmetrical dash and metallic styling elements broke monotony, while the infotainment screen was positioned to minimize driver distraction. The Bronze Edition's light grey fabric upholstery, however, was prone to dirt and felt less durable, with Softex synthetic leather that lacked the quality of genuine leather found in higher trims.

In contrast, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 featured new LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and a redesigned grille, enhancing its premium appeal. The Signature trim added body-color lower exterior trim, emphasizing Mazda's premium aspirations. Inside, the CX-5 maintained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents. The new seats improved comfort, and the driving position felt sportier. However, the control layout, particularly the non-touchscreen Mazda Connect infotainment system, required acclimation. Despite this, the CX-5's interior exuded a sense of luxury and refinement, aligning with Mazda's goal of becoming a premium brand.

Performance

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 243 horsepower, paired with a CVT and standard FWD, with optional AWD. It reached 60 mph in just over 8 seconds, slightly slower than gasoline-only rivals. The hybrid powertrain offered a quick initial response, but the engine's hum became a drone under heavy acceleration. The ride was soft yet confident, with minimal wind and road noise, making it one of the quieter midsize SUVs.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S featured a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a revised six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The 2.5 Turbo variant offered up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium gas. The CX-5's ride was smoother and quieter, with improved structural rigidity and suspension tuning. The driving dynamics were sporty, with reduced body roll and enhanced grip, making it a compelling alternative to entry-level luxury SUVs.

Form and function

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The Highlander's front seats were comfortable with ample adjustments, though the driver's door armrest was awkwardly positioned. Storage was plentiful, with various trays and bins. The second-row seats offered generous space and versatility, while the third row was less accommodating, suitable for children or short trips. Cargo space was 16 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 84.3 cubic feet with seats folded.

The Mazda CX-5's new seats provided improved comfort and support, with a sportier driving position. The back seat remained snug but offered heated cushions and air vents. The control layout was challenging due to the non-touchscreen infotainment system. Cargo space was 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet, adequate compared to luxury SUVs but less impressive against mainstream crossovers.

Technology

5/10

The Highlander Hybrid featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch option on higher trims. The system was responsive, with physical shortcut buttons and climate controls. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration, with navigation and a JBL audio system available on higher trims.

The Mazda CX-5 retained its 10.25-inch Mazda Connect display, lacking touch capability and natural voice recognition. Users relied on center console controls, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2.5 S Premium trim added a 10-speaker Bose audio system, with a generous three-year trial for connected services.

Safety

2022 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The Highlander Hybrid earned a five-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. However, some systems required fine-tuning, with abrupt stops and steering resistance noted.

The Mazda CX-5 offered comprehensive safety features, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Higher trims added adaptive headlights and a surround-view camera. The CX-5 also received an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, with user-friendly tech like a head-up display for blind-spot warnings.
