2022 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

You said it and Nissan listened. The automaker is bringing back much of the heralded capability of the classic Pathfinder, as well as a rugged-ish body style, for the 2022 model year. Thoughtful innovations and features make the Pathfinder more than just a competent family hauler while Nissan’s safety tech puts minds at ease.

2023 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

Benefactor of a long-overdue redesign, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is an improved full-size SUV in every way except for the full-size SUV part of the equation. Though the 2023 Sequoia is about the same size as the outgoing model on the outside, it shrinks on the inside to make room underneath the cabin for a standard hybrid powertrain. As a result, the third-row seat is best reserved for kids, and cargo space is on par with midsize crossovers such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas rather than full-size rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Jeep Wagoneer.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

9/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder showcased a bold new design that drew inspiration from Nissan's latest SUV lineup. It featured a reimagined V-motion grille, reminiscent of the Rogue and Armada, with the new Nissan logo prominently displayed. The LED headlights and slim daytime running lights added a modern touch, while the bulky C-pillar paid homage to the original Pathfinder. With 14 paint options and a distinctive black roof, the Pathfinder offered a robust and contemporary aesthetic. The SUV's wider stance and increased legroom contributed to its rugged appeal, positioning it as a capable and adventurous choice for buyers.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia embraced a bold design that combined elements from the Tundra pickup with a newly styled SUV body. The Sequoia's traditional grille and front bumper gave it a distinct look, setting it apart from its predecessor. Inside, the Sequoia shared design elements with the Tundra, featuring an industrial theme with leather, wood, and metallic finishes in the upscale Capstone trim. The 14-inch infotainment system dominated the dashboard, while the interior's luxurious appearance was somewhat offset by materials reminiscent of its pickup truck origins. The Sequoia's design aimed to make a statement, appealing to those seeking a commanding presence on the road.

Performance

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder retained its 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a new nine-speed automatic transmission, the Pathfinder offered smooth gear transitions and a choice between front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The SUV's fuel economy was competitive, with FWD models achieving 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The Pathfinder's towing capacity reached 6,000 pounds, supported by trailer sway control technology. Its suspension provided a stable ride, and the tight turning radius made it maneuverable in various settings.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia featured a hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. This setup, combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission, offered impressive towing capabilities, with a maximum tow rating of 9,520 pounds. The Sequoia's fuel efficiency improved significantly, achieving 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD. The SUV's adaptive rear air suspension adjusted ride and handling based on driving modes, though the ride quality varied depending on the mode selected. The Sequoia's steering was slow, and the regenerative braking system felt unresponsive at times, but the overall power and efficiency made it a strong performer.

Form and function

2023 Toyota Sequoia

2/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder prioritized interior comfort and flexibility. Enhanced insulation reduced road noise, while features like wide-opening doors and second-row captain's chairs improved accessibility. The Pathfinder offered best-in-class front-seat legroom and innovative EZ Flex Latch and Glide technology for easy third-row access. With 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 80.5 cubic feet with seats folded, the Pathfinder provided ample storage. The interior boasted thoughtful touches like a removable second-row center console and abundant storage options, making it a practical choice for families.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia excelled on open roads, offering a comfortable cabin with soft leather upholstery and a premium sound system. The Sequoia's power-deploying running boards aided entry and exit, while the panoramic sunroof added a touch of luxury. However, the third-row seat's high floor and limited thigh support compromised comfort. Cargo space was limited, with just 11.5 cubic feet behind the third row, expandable to 86.9 cubic feet with seats folded. The Sequoia's adjustable cargo shelf helped maximize space, but the overall utility was reduced compared to its predecessor.

Technology

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder came equipped with a range of user-friendly technology. Standard features included an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system. Upper trims offered a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and a 13-speaker Bose audio system. The Pathfinder's tech was designed to enhance convenience without overwhelming drivers, making it accessible to a wide range of buyers.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia featured a new Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system, with a 14-inch touchscreen available on most trims. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and connected services allowed for user accounts and intelligent assistance. However, glare on the display and occasional system bugs were noted. The Sequoia's tech package included a head-up display, surround-view camera system, and digital rearview mirror, enhancing safety and convenience.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder came standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which included automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. A rearview camera was standard, with a surround-view monitor available on higher trims. The Pathfinder featured ten airbags, with an additional airbag on the Platinum trim. However, crash test ratings from IIHS and NHTSA were not available.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features as standard, bundled into Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. This included forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. The Sequoia also featured blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with automatic braking. While crash test ratings were not available, the Sequoia's platform shared with the Tundra, which received high ratings from IIHS.
