2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, is superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2023 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

Benefactor of a long-overdue redesign, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is an improved full-size SUV in every way except for the full-size SUV part of the equation. Though the 2023 Sequoia is about the same size as the outgoing model on the outside, it shrinks on the inside to make room underneath the cabin for a standard hybrid powertrain. As a result, the third-row seat is best reserved for kids, and cargo space is on par with midsize crossovers such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas rather than full-size rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Jeep Wagoneer.

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered a choice between a classic two-door or a more practical four-door model, with a variety of powertrains including a turbocharged four-cylinder, gasoline V6, turbodiesel V6, gas V8, or plug-in hybrid. The standard six-speed manual transmission could be upgraded to an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive was standard across all trims. The Wrangler came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions. The High Tide special edition, based on the four-door Sport S trim, featured LED exterior lighting, a body-color hardtop with a Sunrider Fliptop, and a Gorilla Glass windshield. It also included the Xtreme Recon package with a 1.5-inch suspension lift, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, and 35-inch BF Goodrich T/A KO2 tires. The interior was basic, with durable cloth upholstery and floor drain plugs for easy cleaning, but the price could climb to nearly $60,000 with options.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia boasted a bold design inspired by the Toyota Tundra, with a more substantial presence than its predecessor. The Capstone trim level featured an upscale interior with leather, wood, and metallic finishes, and a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system. The Sequoia lineup included the SR5, Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro trims, with prices ranging from $59,895 to $79,895. The TRD Pro was designed for off-roading, while the SR5 and Limited could be equipped with a TRD Off-Road Package. The Capstone test vehicle included 4WD, Wind Chill Pearl paint, and a rear air suspension, bringing the MSRP to $81,365. The Sequoia's interior was luxurious, but some materials reminded drivers of its pickup truck origins.

Performance

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide was equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, producing 285 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm. The eight-speed automatic transmission was a $4,000 option, and the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system was included. The EPA estimated 21 mpg in combined driving, but the Xtreme Recon Package modifications resulted in an average of 16.8 mpg over a week of testing. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, with a rough ride, loud cabin, and touchy brakes, but it offered an immersive experience that appealed to off-road enthusiasts.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia featured a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, a 36-kilowatt electric motor/generator, and a 1.87 kilowatt-hour nickel-metal hydride battery pack. This hybrid powertrain delivered 437 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 583 pound-feet of torque at 2,400 rpm. The Sequoia's towing capacity increased to 9,520 pounds, and it achieved an EPA rating of 20 mpg with 4WD. The Capstone 4WD test vehicle averaged 17.8 mpg. The Sequoia offered multiple driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+, with a Custom mode for personalized settings. The adaptive rear air suspension adjusted ride and handling traits, but the steering was slow, and the regenerative braking system felt unresponsive.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

2/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's raised suspension made entry and exit challenging, especially for shorter individuals. The interior featured comfortable seats with durable cloth upholstery, but the driving position was close to the steering wheel and windshield. Visibility was mixed, with some areas requiring leaning forward to see traffic lights. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry difficulties but found agreeable accommodations once inside. Cargo space was 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat, expanding to 72.4 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia excelled on open roads, with comfortable front seats, a JBL premium sound system, and a triple-zone climate control system. Power-deploying running boards aided entry, but taller individuals might find them inconvenient. The second-row captain's chairs lacked sliding capability, limiting third-row legroom. The third-row seat was mounted high, reducing comfort. Cargo space was limited to 11.5 cubic feet with the third-row seat in its rearmost position, expanding to 49 cubic feet with the third-row seat folded. The Sequoia's maximum cargo capacity was 86.9 cubic feet, smaller than its predecessor and segment rivals.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide featured a 7-inch touchscreen display with Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The optional Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system offered upgrades like satellite radio and a navigation system. The Wrangler included remote engine starting, satellite radio, passive keyless entry, and single-zone automatic climate control with a new air filtration system. The Cold Weather Group added heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia came with a new Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system, with a 14-inch touchscreen in the Capstone trim. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, user accounts, and an Intelligent Assistant. The Capstone trim also featured a 10-inch head-up display and a surround-view camera system. The Sequoia's parking sensors and automatic rear braking system effectively prevented collisions.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, offering blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. However, the Wrangler received a three-star rating for rollover resistance from the NHTSA and a Marginal rating in IIHS testing, indicating safety concerns.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia came standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, which included forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition. The Sequoia also featured blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. While crash-test ratings were not available, the Tundra's high IIHS rating suggested positive results for the Sequoia.
