2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, is superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2023 BMW X7

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered a choice between the classic two-door and the more practical four-door model, each with a variety of powertrains including a turbocharged four-cylinder, gasoline V6, turbodiesel V6, gas V8, and a plug-in hybrid. The standard six-speed manual transmission could be upgraded to an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive was a given, with multiple systems available depending on the trim. The Wrangler came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions like the High Tide model, which featured LED exterior lighting, a body-color hardtop, and the Xtreme Recon package with a 1.5-inch suspension lift and 35-inch tires. Despite its rugged appeal, the Wrangler's interior remained basic, with a focus on durability over luxury, and a price that could easily escalate with options.

In contrast, the 2023 BMW X7 underwent a mid-cycle makeover, adopting a bolder front-end design reminiscent of the BMW 7 Series sedan. The interior saw significant updates, including a curved glass housing for the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen, and a new gear selector. The X7's interior materials were of premium quality, with options for leather upholstery and various wood trims. Despite its polarizing exterior, the X7 maintained a cohesive and elegant interior, offering a modern and luxurious driving experience. The X7's design changes aimed to enhance its presence, though opinions on its aesthetics varied.

Performance

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2023 BMW X7

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide was equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine featuring eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The eight-speed automatic transmission was a mandatory upgrade, and the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system was optional. The Wrangler's fuel economy was rated at 21 mpg combined by the EPA, but real-world testing showed an average of 16.8 mpg. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, characterized by its loud cabin, vague steering, and rough ride, but it offered an immersive and adventurous experience that appealed to off-road enthusiasts.

The 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i featured a new 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, delivering 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The X7 M60i model upgraded to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Despite its nearly 6,000-pound weight, the X7 offered impressive acceleration and handling, with a balance of performance and comfort that catered to a wide range of drivers.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

2023 BMW X7

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's raised suspension made entry and exit challenging, especially for shorter individuals. The interior featured durable cloth upholstery and a mix of plastic and rubber materials, with a driving position close to the steering wheel and dashboard. Visibility was a mixed bag, with some areas offering excellent views and others compromised by design elements. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry challenges but found comfortable accommodations once inside. Cargo space was practical, with 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 72.4 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The 2023 BMW X7 excelled in interior space, with ample room for second-row passengers and a power-operated middle row for easier third-row access. The third row accommodated average-sized adults, though thigh support was limited. Cargo space was versatile, with 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 48.6 cubic feet with the third row stowed, and 90.4 cubic feet with the middle seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable suspension made loading and unloading convenient, while front-seat passengers enjoyed generous storage options.

Technology

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2023 BMW X7

5/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide, based on the Sport S trim, featured a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. While the larger Uconnect 8.4 system offered additional features, the basic setup met most needs. The Wrangler included options like remote engine start, satellite radio, and heated front seats, but wind noise could affect voice command effectiveness.

The 2023 BMW X7 introduced the latest iDrive infotainment system, which, despite its intuitive layout, suffered from the removal of physical buttons. Basic functions were straightforward, but more complex adjustments required navigating through menus. Voice commands offered a workaround, but the system's reliance on them was seen as a patch for its shortcomings. The X7's technology suite was comprehensive, but the user experience could be improved with more physical controls.

Safety

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2023 BMW X7

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, offering features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were subpar, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS, highlighting the need for cautious driving.

The 2023 BMW X7's safety features were extensive, with standard equipment including frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. The M60i trim added a surround-view camera system, and options included adaptive cruise control and a highway driving assist feature. While crash-test ratings were unavailable, the X7's safety features performed reliably, enhancing driver confidence.
