2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Reviews Summary

Designed and engineered to impress drivers regardless of the weather, road, or terrain, the new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee retains the stylish looks and unrelenting capability for which the model is legendarily known, combined with a significant upgrade in technology and sophistication. We headed for Moab, Utah to put the redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee to the test, sampling a wide array of trim levels and powertrains both on and off the pavement.

2023 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

Benefactor of a long-overdue redesign, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is an improved full-size SUV in every way except for the full-size SUV part of the equation. Though the 2023 Sequoia is about the same size as the outgoing model on the outside, it shrinks on the inside to make room underneath the cabin for a standard hybrid powertrain. As a result, the third-row seat is best reserved for kids, and cargo space is on par with midsize crossovers such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas rather than full-size rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Jeep Wagoneer.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

9/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee was a familiar sight, echoing Jeep's design traditions while offering a two-row version of the previous year's Grand Cherokee L. Jeep launched the three-row Grand Cherokee L first, and then introduced the shorter, sportier two-row model. Available in various trims like Laredo, Altitude, and Summit Reserve, the Grand Cherokee offered a range of prices from $37,390 to $63,365, excluding destination charges. Its design paid homage to the classic 1963 Wagoneer, featuring a forward-leaning grille and trapezoidal wheel arches. Inside, the Grand Cherokee mirrored the Grand Cherokee L, with options ranging from basic cloth seats to luxurious quilted leather in the Summit Reserve trim.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia made a bold statement with its design, blending the look of the Toyota Tundra with a newly styled SUV body. The Sequoia's grille and bumper gave it a distinct presence, and inside, it shared an industrial theme with the Tundra. The Capstone trim featured a luxurious interior with a 14-inch infotainment system and a two-tone color scheme. The lineup included trims like SR5, Limited, and TRD Pro, with prices starting at $59,895. The Sequoia offered off-road capabilities, especially in the TRD Pro trim, but its ground clearance and angles suggested less capability than its predecessor. The Sequoia's design and features aimed to balance luxury with ruggedness.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

8/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee offered both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive options, with a choice between a V6 and a V8 engine. The standard 3.6-liter V6 produced 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. The available 5.7-liter V8 delivered 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, increasing towing capacity to 7,200 pounds. Three 4WD systems were available, with Quadra-Drive II offering the most off-road capability. The Trailhawk trim excelled in off-roading, featuring an air suspension and improved angles. Fuel economy ranged from 17 to 21 mpg, depending on the engine and drivetrain.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia featured a hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, producing 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. This setup allowed for a maximum tow rating of 9,520 pounds and a payload capacity of 1,730 pounds. The Sequoia's fuel efficiency improved significantly, with EPA ratings of 20 mpg for 4WD and 22 mpg for RWD. The Capstone trim offered various driving modes, but the ride quality varied depending on the mode and road conditions. The Sequoia's steering was slow, and the regenerative braking system felt unresponsive at times.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

7/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

2/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee provided comfort for front passengers, with higher trims offering heated and ventilated seats. Visibility was improved, especially for off-roading. Rear-seat space was tight, and the two-row model offered 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 70.8 cubic feet. The Grand Cherokee L provided more room for passengers and cargo.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia excelled on highways, with comfortable front seats and a premium sound system. The second-row captain’s chairs lacked sliding capability, affecting third-row space. Cargo capacity was limited, with only 11.5 cubic feet behind the third row, expandable to 86.9 cubic feet with seats folded. The hybrid powertrain reduced overall utility compared to previous models.

Technology

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee was packed with technology, including a head-up display, Night Vision, and multiple touchscreens. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen available on higher trims. A front passenger interactive display was optional, enhancing entertainment options.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia featured a new Toyota Audio Multimedia system, with an 8-inch touchscreen on the base trim and a 14-inch screen on higher trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, and the system allowed for user accounts and a guest mode. The Capstone trim included a 10-inch head-up display and a surround-view camera system.

Features like Intersection Collision Assist and Active Driving Assist offered semi-autonomous driving capabilities. A hands-free version of Active Driving Assist was expected to arrive in 2022.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia came standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, offering features like forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were also included. While crash test ratings were not available, the Sequoia's platform shared high ratings with the Tundra.
