2022 Ford Bronco Reviews SummaryThe deep roster of Ford Bronco models means there’s one for almost any skill level, as well as a wide range of budgets. It’s as off-road capable as the Jeep Wrangler but is significantly better to drive on pavement. Unfortunately, the Bronco’s excellence is well documented and it’s so popular that it’s already sold out for 2022.
2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Reviews SummaryThe Kia Sportage is the automaker’s longest-running nameplate in the United States. It started out as a no-frills off-roader, but today the Sportage competes in the red-hot small crossover SUV segment against big names like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, as well as the Hyundai Tucson from Kia’s parent brand. All of those nameplates have added hybrid variants recently, so Kia followed suit as part of a 2023-model-year redesign. The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid will be offered alongside non-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Sportage, which represents the nameplate’s fifth generation. The hybrid model is part of an effort to create more space between the Sportage and the smaller Kia Seltos, which also brought increased interior space, more tech, and radical exterior styling. The Sportage Hybrid arrives at dealerships later this year in base LX, midlevel EX, and range-topping SX-Prestige trim levels (we drove SX-Prestige for this review). Note that this isn’t the same lineup as the non-hybrid Sportage, which gets SX, X-Line, and rugged X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trim levels as well.

The 2022 Ford Bronco captivated enthusiasts with its retro styling and robust off-road capabilities. It offered a wide range of trims, including the Everglades model, which was specifically designed for swamp trekking with features like an intake snorkel and 35-inch mud-terrain tires. Despite its rugged appearance, the Bronco was equipped with modern technology, such as G.O.A.T. modes and a digital instrument panel, making it a versatile choice for both off-road adventures and daily driving. However, its popularity led to a quick sell-out, leaving many potential buyers waiting for future availability.
In contrast, the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid embraced a bold design with its angular LED headlights and distinctive "boomerang" daytime running lights. Built on the N3 platform, it offered increased size and interior space compared to its predecessor. The Sportage Hybrid's interior featured a minimalist design with a focus on technology, including a large optional infotainment display and SynTex artificial leather upholstery. While the materials used in the cabin were not as luxurious as some competitors, the Sportage Hybrid provided a comfortable and spacious environment for passengers.

The 2022 Ford Bronco was powered by a choice of two engines: a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder producing 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, and an optional turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were equipped with turbos to deliver ample power, and the Bronco's off-road prowess was evident across its lineup. The Everglades model, in particular, excelled in challenging terrains, capable of fording water up to 36.4 inches deep. On-road, the Bronco offered a smoother ride than its rival, the Jeep Wrangler, with less wind noise and tire howl.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid featured a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain provided smooth and predictable acceleration, with seamless transitions between electric and gasoline power. The Sportage Hybrid's transmission was well-tuned, offering smooth shifts and quick responses. While not designed as a driver's car, it delivered a comfortable ride with a quiet cabin, although its steering felt artificially heavy in Sport mode. The Sportage Hybrid's towing capacity was 2,000 pounds, slightly less than the non-hybrid version.
The 2022 Ford Bronco's boxy design contributed to its spacious interior, offering ample headroom and legroom for passengers. Cargo capacity varied depending on the model and roof type, with the two-door hard top providing up to 52.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The four-door hard top increased capacity to 77.6 cubic feet. The Bronco also featured clever storage solutions, such as netted door pockets and accessory rails, enhancing its utility for outdoor adventures.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid, while slightly less spacious than its non-hybrid counterpart, remained competitive in its segment. It offered a dual-level cargo floor, providing 39.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats in place and 73.7 cubic feet with them folded. The Sportage Hybrid's interior was designed for convenience, with a rotary shift knob and well-placed USB ports. The center console storage bin and adjustable cupholders added to its practicality.
The 2022 Ford Bronco integrated technology to enhance its off-road capabilities, featuring G.O.A.T. modes and a forward-looking trail camera. The Sync 4 infotainment system offered quick responses and sharp graphics, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Bronco's technology suite included a wireless charging pad and advanced off-road apps, making it a tech-savvy choice for adventurers.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid boasted a standard 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims offered a 12.3-inch panoramic display. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with pleasing graphics and responsive touch controls. The Sportage Hybrid also featured touch controls for audio and climate settings, along with multiple USB-C ports and an optional Harman Kardon audio system.
The 2022 Ford Bronco came with standard safety features like hill-start assist and trailer sway control. Optional packages added advanced features such as frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Bronco received mixed safety ratings, with four stars for frontal crash protection and three stars for rollover protection from the NHTSA, while the IIHS awarded it "Good" ratings in most categories.
The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid's safety features included standard forward collision warning and lane keep assist. Higher trims offered additional tech like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. The SX-Prestige trim level provided advanced features such as a blind-spot view camera and Remote Smart Parking Assist. However, crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of testing.
