2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a bold and polarizing design, which over time became more familiar on the roads. Its distinctive blunt and bulbous nose, along with black windshield pillars, gave it a unique floating roof appearance. Despite its swollen haunches and cartoonishly-flared quarter panels, the Highlander Hybrid's design was expected to become more subdued with time. The interior offered a two-tone look with leather upholstery in higher trims, but the dashboard's asymmetrical design and reflective screen were points of contention. The mix of illumination colors in the gauges also contributed to a busy appearance.

In contrast, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 featured subtle exterior updates, including new LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and a redesigned grille. The Signature trim added body-color lower exterior trim, enhancing its premium appeal. Inside, the CX-5 retained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery and polished metallic accents. The new seats improved comfort, and the driving position was sportier. However, the infotainment system's lack of a touchscreen and natural voice recognition remained a drawback, requiring users to adapt to console controls.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, achieving 36 mpg in combined driving with front-wheel drive. Its total output was 243 horsepower, with optional all-wheel drive. While fuel efficiency improved, the driving experience was less engaging, with the engine sounding strained during acceleration. The steering was lifeless, and the ride exhibited unwanted body movement. However, the regenerative brakes were an improvement, and the SUV performed well on smooth roads.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. The 2.5 Turbo variant delivered up to 256 horsepower with premium gas. The revised six-speed automatic transmission and increased structural rigidity enhanced the driving dynamics, providing a quieter and smoother ride. The CX-5 excelled in handling, with reduced body roll and improved grip, making it a more enjoyable drive compared to the Highlander Hybrid.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid provided comfortable front seats with power adjustments and leather upholstery. The second-row bench seat increased capacity to eight but felt narrow for three adults. The third-row seat was cramped and uncomfortable. Cargo space was generous, with 84.3 cubic feet available with seats folded, but storage solutions were less practical due to the placement of the wireless charger.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 improved its seating with new, supportive furnishings and a sportier driving position. The back seat remained snug, but heated cushions and air vents added comfort. Storage was adequate, with a small center armrest bin and wireless charging. Cargo space was 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet with seats down, which was competitive with luxury SUVs but less so against mainstream crossovers.

Technology

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

5/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came with a comprehensive infotainment system, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, and various connectivity features. The system was user-friendly, but the sound quality was inconsistent. Driver Easy Speak and a video rearview mirror were notable features, enhancing convenience and safety.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 retained its Mazda Connect system with a 10.25-inch display, lacking touch capability and natural voice recognition. Users had to rely on console controls, which required acclimation. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a three-year trial of connected services. The Bose sound system was satisfactory, and SiriusXM was available on higher trims.

Safety

8/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid featured Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, offering a range of driver-assist technologies. However, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were only available on higher trims. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance had some inconsistencies. The Highlander received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and was expected to achieve a "Top Safety Pick+" from IIHS.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 included the i-Activsense package with comprehensive safety features. Higher trims added adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera, and Traffic Jam Assist. The system generally operated smoothly, with alerts displayed on the head-up display. The CX-5 earned a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from IIHS, showcasing its strong safety credentials.
