2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

Jeep is now a luxury brand. That's why the 2022 Grand Cherokee L can ask, with a straight face, that you pay up to $70,000 for the privilege of ownership. But because Jeep is a proudly American brand, a war veteran that helped Allied troops defeat fascism, the company has earned the kind of unvarnished reputation and universal praise given only to a handful of U.S. presidents.

As such, a $60,000 Wrangler or a $100,000 Grand Wagoneer doesn't seem snooty, while a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus sure does. Jeep's heritage as a hardcore 4x4 brand and its newer image as a bougie city truck maker can coexist. We took a Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve across Tennessee to prove it.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a bold and distinctive design, but over time, its appearance became more familiar and less striking. Its front end was characterized by a blunt, bulbous nose, giving it an aggressive look, while black windshield pillars created a floating roof effect. Despite its swollen haunches and 20-inch wheels on higher trims, the design could feel overwhelming. Inside, the Highlander Hybrid offered a two-tone interior with soft leather in higher trims, though some details, like the instrument-panel shroud, felt cheap. The infotainment system was dominated by a 12.3-inch screen, which could suffer from reflections, and the mix of illumination colors made the gauges appear busy.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was an elegant extension of the standard Grand Cherokee, with an 11.4-inch longer body to accommodate a third row. Its design was unmistakably Jeep, featuring a seven-slot grille and modernized lighting. The Grand Cherokee L's interior was luxurious, with high-quality materials like quilted Nappa leather and real wood. The dual high-resolution screens and thoughtful layout made it feel like a premium vehicle. Even in all-black, the interior offered enough contrast to keep it visually appealing, and lighter leather options added a touch of luxury.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, achieving an EPA rating of 36 mpg combined. With 243 horsepower, it offered adequate power but lacked excitement, especially on hilly terrain where the engine sounded strained. The steering was lifeless, and the ride was soft, leading to unwanted body movement. However, it excelled in fuel efficiency, averaging 31.7 mpg in tests, though it fell short of expectations. The regenerative brakes were an improvement, and the SUV was comfortable on smooth roads, but overall, it wasn't enjoyable to drive.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered a choice between a 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter V8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6, with 293 horsepower, felt underpowered for the vehicle's size, and the engine noise was noticeable. The V8, available on higher trims, provided 357 horsepower and a more satisfying driving experience. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis was impressive, with excellent ride composure and steering feel. The optional air suspension offered adjustable ride heights and improved handling. Fuel economy for the V6 was decent at 21 mpg combined, while the V8 was less efficient.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offered comfortable front seats with power adjustments and heating/ventilation options. The second-row bench seat increased capacity to eight but felt narrow, and the third row was cramped and uncomfortable for adults. Cargo space was generous, with 84.3 cubic feet available with seats folded, but storage solutions were less practical than before. The wireless charger blocked access to storage, and there were no dedicated storage wells for groceries.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L featured a user-friendly Uconnect 5 infotainment system with physical switches for climate and audio controls. The interior was spacious, with ample room in all rows, including the third row, which could accommodate adults. The panoramic roof and multiple USB ports enhanced comfort, though the air vents were insufficient. The Grand Cherokee L offered a large central cubby and wireless phone charging, with a straightforward rotary shifter.

Technology

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came with standard connectivity features like Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The top infotainment system included a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, and navigation. The voice recognition system worked well, but the sound system's quality varied. Driver Easy Speak projected the driver's voice to rear passengers, and a video rearview mirror provided a clear view behind the vehicle.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered premium features on upper trims, such as massage seats, a head-up display, and a 360-degree camera system. The Uconnect system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with dual touchscreens for rear passengers. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, while higher trims added advanced options like automatic parking and traffic sign recognition.

Safety

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid featured Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, which included forward-collision warning with intersection support and emergency steering assistance. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering systems had some inconsistencies, but overall, the safety tech was effective. The Highlander received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and was expected to achieve a "Top Safety Pick+" from IIHS.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L had not been tested by NHTSA or IIHS. It came standard with knee airbags, a rear seat alert, and trailer sway control. The vehicle included various driver aids, enhancing safety and convenience.
