2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a polarizing design that, over time, became more familiar. Its blunt, bulbous nose and floating roof design gave it a distinctive look, though some elements like the cartoonishly-flared quarter panels seemed overwhelming. Despite its bold appearance, the Highlander Hybrid's design was expected to become more subdued with time. The interior offered a two-tone look with leather upholstery in higher trims, but some details, like the hollow-sounding instrument-panel shroud, detracted from its overall quality. The infotainment system was dominated by a 12.3-inch screen, though reflections were an issue on sunny days.

In contrast, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade boasted an elegant and striking exterior, shedding any derivative design criticisms of its predecessors. Its prominent grille, sculpted wheel arches, and continuous glass strip gave it a sophisticated look. Inside, the Palisade offered a polished and luxurious cabin with high-quality materials. The horizontally arrayed screen and beefy center console added to its upscale feel. The Palisade's fit and finish were near-luxury, making it a worthy flagship for Hyundai.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, achieving 36 mpg combined (35 mpg with AWD) and producing 243 horsepower. While more efficient, the new powertrain lacked excitement, sounding strained during acceleration and offering lifeless steering. The regenerative brakes were improved, but the ride was marred by unwanted body movement. On smooth roads, it handled well, but bumps and dips quickly disrupted its composure. Around town, the electric motor torque was a highlight, but overall, the driving experience was not enjoyable.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade featured a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. While not the most efficient, with 22 mpg combined for FWD models, it offered a satisfying baritone engine note and no turbo lag. The Palisade handled nicely, thanks to its independent suspension and stabilizer bars, and could tow up to 5,000 pounds. Its performance was more than adequate for family use, providing a smooth and responsive driving experience.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid provided roomy front accommodations with power-adjustable seats and leather upholstery. The second-row bench seat increased capacity to eight but felt narrow, and the third row was uncomfortable for adults. Cargo space was decent, with 16 cubic feet behind the third row and a maximum of 84.3 cubic feet. However, storage solutions were less generous than before, and the wireless charger blocked access to the storage bin.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade excelled as a minivan replacement, offering comfortable seating across all rows. The third row was easily accessible, and the second-row captain's chairs were particularly comfortable. Storage was abundant, with multiple compartments and a generous cargo area of 86.4 cubic feet with seats folded. The shift-by-wire setup and intuitive controls enhanced functionality, while the dual-panel sunroof improved ambiance in upper trims.

Technology

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa as standard. The top infotainment system featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, and navigation. While user-friendly, the sound system's quality varied, and the voice recognition system didn't control climate settings. Driver Easy Speak and a video rearview mirror added convenience.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade showcased Hyundai's technological prowess with a high-resolution touchscreen and Harman Kardon audio system. It included wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, multiple USB ports, and a Qi wireless charging pad. The Blue Link system offered remote functions, and the digital instrument cluster integrated with safety features. The Palisade's tech offerings were comprehensive and user-friendly.

Safety

2022 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid featured Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, adding intersection support and emergency steering assistance. While effective, some systems like adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance felt uneven. The Highlander earned a five-star NHTSA rating and was expected to achieve a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade included a robust suite of safety features, such as seven airbags, blind-spot collision avoidance, and adaptive cruise control. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and a five-star NHTSA rating. The Palisade's safety systems were comprehensive and well-regarded.
